I fly thumbs but notice that my precision is not where I want it to be. I was playing with the pinch style on the sim last night and though it felt a bit awkward, I think I could make it work. I also seemed to be a bit more precise in some of my maneuvers and because I have less flexibility with the pinch style it seemed to slow down and smooth out some moves. I also note that almost all of the pro's fly the pinch style.

Any thoughts from people who made the switch? Is it worth the effort? How did it change your flying? I have been flying for nearly 2 years with thumbs now.

I switched from thumbs to pinch method. At first its annoying but when you dont want to do it you just have to stick with it and then it will click.

I just recently switched to pinch/ fingers just a few months ago after I got my SIM. I forced myself fly pinch and somehow it's natural now At first it felt weird flying picnh.
My 3D has become much smoother and more precise. I feel like my heli is more predictable when I fly pinch.

I do sometimes convert back to thumbs when I'm flying but most of the time I fly fingers. It worths the effort. The more you practice flying pinch the more you get used to it. I had been flying thumbs for probably 3+ years now so that's why I sometimes go back to thumbs

I made the switch from thumbs to pinch and I agree that it's more precise. I had to force myself and now I dont regret it.

I recently did the opposite! I started flying heli's a nipple tweaker (Pincher...) than switched over to thumbs. I found that pinching made things too slow and constricted and that thumbs helped speed stuff up.

Just me. Who know, do whats best for you!

Thanks everyone, will give it a go and see how I do. It is weird but I think I'll get used to it. Have to get myself a neck strap now I think though...never used to use one with thumbs.

Yeah,
I will admit that especially with the design of the FF9, you need a nech strap to fly comfortably with the pinch, but when you get into chaos and such its all to easy to have a finger dislodge and it all comes crashing down

Pinch is cooler anyways...

i fly thumbs for forty years and have just started to change,
i've been watching my friends that fly hard 3-d and every one of them fly pinch, until they start to rock with hard 3-d and all of them revert to thumbs. i asked each of 4 of these guys about it and they didn't remember changing, but i watched closely and they did. i think thumbs are quicker and pinch is smoother. Ron

Also most of the flyers i've watched have their thumbs on top of the sticks and the index finger on the vetical part of the sticks. this isn't exactly pinch with both fingers on the sides of the sticks. sort of rub and pinch. Hah! Ron

I fly thumbs and had a go at the pinch method. I'd been flying the pinch method for a while and found my flying was smoother but i found it difficult and didn't have the confidence i had with thumbs. Alos couldn't do things as quick.

I got talking to a friend at our field and told him i was learning thumbs. He asked me "why?"

I replied:

"I think you can only go so far with the thumbs method.....all the pro's seem to fly pinch so it must be the way to go"

He then told me that he uses thumbs. His flying is amazing. He's done very well in the national events.

I've never flown pinch since! If he can do that with thumbs then i have no worries of it limiting my progress.

If i was learning to fly from scratch i would learn pinch. I also teach the pinch method. But if i flew thumbs already i would stick with thumbs. Thats only my opinion thouch. If you have the time and patience then switch to thumbs. Whatever you prefer.

Went to Todd Bennett's flying clinic and he flies with thumbs. I don't think there is one answer at all and can't see any reason to change from what seems natural to me.

Well i think i might go out on a limb and say that i think the *rub'n'thumb* is indeed slower, but more precise!
I also think with prectise you can speed it up as well...
I usually fly rub*n*thumb but need to go thumbsy to play with idle/throttlehold etc and have to say it dosnt feel like there is as much potential for control like there is with thumbsies...

Just my thoughts, i think i'm one of the few heli chaps that fly pinch but our local hot shot was thinking about going pitch at one point as he's almost had his finger abandon the stick on chaos manovers lol...

Either way i can just about manage both, depends how your most comfortable...

Some pros fly pinch, some thumb, this should at least show that either method is capable so what am i rambling about.... get out and fly, or at least hit up the sim guys heh.

I consider myself a precision flyer and I'm flying thumbs. Flying F3C and also my 3D is F3C style precision. It DOES take training to make thumbs both fast and smooth but you get both speed and precision from it if you do it right. As someone already said, I felt too restricted with the pinching.
You might try putting a little expo on the cyclic to easen up the precision part, but that will loose you some precision at the higher cyclic speeds.

What might help is pivoting the sticks such that the thumbs move in a more natural direction. For instance some multiplex transmitters allow such pivotong.

My impression is: stick bangers looking for precision might improve precision when going to pinch
Precision flyers might get a quicker response for 3D stuff by going thumb

I started flying thumbs but I found when moving quick with the collective I was almost always pushing a bit on the tail. So I'v been flying pinch now for a while and my tail controll is better my right hand controll has suffered. Does anybody fly both? I've been thinking about trying. I stink anyway so I guess it couldn't hurt to try

I was considering switching from thumbs to pinch because I had a hard time getting to some spots, and occasionally I would slip off the sticks. I cut the sticks down and made them short, which makes a big difference for me. I have small hands and the stock minimum stick length is too long on my futaba radios. I also keep the stick tips sharp, which helps with slipping off.

There is a third alternative, which I like to call the loose pinch.

Basically I fly with a pinch grip with my thumbs sort of on top of the stick. I get the steady feel of pinching for small movements. As I move to extreme throws (and or rapid movements) I release the pinch & just use my thumb.
Anyway works for me.
