e-Electric Batteries & Chargers > JR Battery Pack Problem

When I fly my JR Venture the battery pack (1100mah) runs out of power after I've run about half a tank of fuel. I've cycled it 8 times over the course of 2 days on my Accu Cycle Plus and it read that it was giving out 1089 mah. I flew it today and about half a tank of fuel was left and my battery died. Luckily I was on the way down so it landed right side up. Any way this is a very annoying and dangerous situation does anyone have knowledge of electronics tell me if this is a battery problem. I have a GY401 Futaba Gyro and all digital servo's.

welll, assuming that it does cycle properly,
the only other possibility is that your servo,
switch
and/or linkages are severely binding or just
flat out defective.

did you feel any of the servos, connectors, rx
to see how warm they are?

The switch will do that. If the switch is going bad it will seem like the battery is dying quick.

I have the same setup. i did find the wall charger wasnt charging the pack completely, I started using my "Real" Charger and I manage about 4 tanks till my volt watch is halfway. Hope this helps.

This is what i think you should do, Strip open the battery pack by cutting the plastic case. check the terminals you might have a small hairline crack, this might lead to a crash. It happened to me, full charge then nothing and my bird came soring from the sky down to the ground. I was using a JR 1900 mah and the battery connector had a hairline crack thus power and nothing. Either change your batt to a futaba or Glue the cells together with Super glue Jr should really glue the cells together, vibration might make it come apart or hard landing

Cold temperatures will kill off a pack fast in the winter, but not as fast as your describing. Most of the time when the voltage drops on a pack in the winter when you take the heli back inside the house the voltage will recover anf the battery will cycle normally.

Make sure your cycler is discharging at hte same current as your helicopter. Or at least close.

The capacity is also dependant on the ammount of current being drawn. As the pack discharges the internal resistance will increase as the plates have less access to unreacted chemicals. At high currents the reaction can't happen fast enough so the voltage to the receiver will drop faster and the pack will appear to have less capacity.

Good luck

Cold pack

rickc, I am cycling the battery pack out side in my trailer and it is 25 degrees Fahrenheit. At this cold temperature would the cycling be ineffective?

It shouldn't die that quickly...there's either an electrical circuit problem (like the switch), or your servos are stalling due to binding and draining current...

Could this be it?

When I was installing the gyro I accidentally cut the black lead that comes from the receiver. Not wanting to spend money I soldered it back together. Could this be the point draining the battery? If not is there any way to test my setup to pinpoint the problem? I don't want to cut open the battery unless it is absolutely necessary.

it could be the draining point. Look
under the receiver and see if there is
a puddle of loose electrons sitting
on the floor. If so, scoop 'em up and
put them back into the battery.

Seriously though, something is shorting
out. That much current dumped in that
short amount of time will create heat.

take the battery out and ttry connecting
it directly to the RX see how that goes.
Then add the switch and so on until you
add the 1 element that causes your
battery to die.

Battery going dead

Rennzo12 RDRC, the things I would check is the end points on the throttle, especially the high one to make sure your not stalling the servo out. If you cycle the battery and it shows close to the capacity it is supposed to be, I would try eliminating the switch and plug the battery directly into the receiver. Now sit in front of the TV and simulate a flight for aprox a half hour of you being the best 3D pilot around without stopping the xmiter sticks. Now I know this doesn't draw as much current as an actual flight but it will be close and better than rebuilding from a crash.

try a different battery ,if it still drains like before its the servos or the switch,.

I agree with Mike, try a different pack, if it discharges it isn't the first pack but is in your system, then as mentioned before start with one connection and add on switches servos etc until the problem is duplicated. Good luck and keep us informed.

Problem Solved

Good News: It turns out that the servo leads were pinched draining the battery.
Bad new: I got it flying today then I crashed it.
