Mr. Moore:

I think the only way to really answer your basic question is that you need to ask your customers how they found you, the old fashioned way....asking how they found out about you.

Mr. Moore

You need to track the effectiveness of your advertisements. Otherwise you could potentially end up wasting money. I assume you are already having access to stats here on RR showing how many people click through to your website. While this info is nice it doesn't really tell anything about whether your advertisements are cost effective or not, but it does tell something about the effectiveness of the advertisements themselves. Advertising can only bring the visitors to your site. After they are on your site, your site has to finish the work by making them buy.
To be able to track the cost effectiveness you need to have the ad here on RR send the user to a tracking page on your site which then in turn redirects the user to your main page. The tracking page needs to place a cookie on the users computer to uniquely identify the user at a later time. You then need to modify your shopping cart so it checks for the cookie at checkout. That way you will know exactly if the buyer was redirected from here. Since 10-15% of all internet users have disabled cookies there will be a slight under count. IP addresses could be used on the remaining portion that doesn't allow cookies, but then you need to "expire" the information. So for example if it takes more than 45 minutes from the time the user (IP address) enters your site to the time there is a checkout It wouldn't be counted as a referral. The benefit of the cookies is that you can see if a user buys at a later date by extending the cookie expiration.

Also realize that the value of advertising is not only direct (People click through and buy), but also indirect in the form of branding and having your link on a site with many visitors will in turn increase your ranking in intelligent searchengines like Google.

Asking a user where he came from is next to worthless since most users never fill out that information if requested.

Regarding the stats issue:

realize there is no way to tell 100% exactly how many people visit a site on a daily basis. You can get close, but never 100%
You can use cookies, but 10-15% of all users have them disabled, so you would have an under count. You could then use IP address to track the remaining 10-15%, but that wouldn't be 100% accurate.
Also realize that using IP addresses doesn't necessarily create an over count. It could also work the other way and create an under count. ISP's reuse IP addresses, so two different users can easily end up with the same IP. The longer the timeframe and the more users we are talking about, the more likely the under count will be.
Even some countries seem to have a limited amount of IP addresses going out from the country. I have noticed that a lot of different users from Saudi come to my site from the same few IP addresses.

I am not just blowing hot air here. I have extensive statistics to back this up. I run the Aviation Top 100 list on my site http://www.avitop.com/ and we keep track of almost a thousand aviation sites traffic. Our tracking server handles more than a million users on a daily basis and just one days worth of log files is around 200mb.

You guys should ask Stephan at CyberHeli if he has noticed a decrease sales since he was banished from RunRyder. I will be very safe in saying he is uneffected, if anything he has gained more support from the people who feel he has be s**t on by the establishment. I am going to buy my Freya from him because I feel he was forced out, sorry guys. You need to become savy businees people and realize you are competing in a global market and you will have to change or you will be left out.
