e-Align T-REX 250-450-500-600 > Control with thumbs or thumbs and forefinger?

I have seen two basic control technique of the transmitter, the thumbs on the ends of the sticks, and pinching the stick between the thumbs and forefingers. I at present use the thumbs only, which is the best way to learn. If I should/need to change better to do it now while I'm still in you're basic hover mode. Thanks

It's really up to you how you want to fly. I fly with my thumbs and my index finger but I do not "pinch" them together.

I posted this last year when I was starting. I had started flying thumbs but then switched to pinch after a month of flying. It was uncomfortable at first. Those that pinch say you will get more even throws using 2 fingers instead of 1. I have seen people 3D with both but a lot of 3D sponsored pilots pinch. If you're starting up, I would say learn to fly pinched. Most people that flew planes were thumb flyers with planes.

I instinctivley fly pinch with my T Rex and thumbs with fixed wing models. I find that I get a lot more of the precise control requied to fly helicopters with the pinch style grip.

There is really no definitive "better" way to hold the sticks. I have seen very competent people fly pinched, and others will the same skill level fly thumbs. Like so many other things about your radio, it is all about how it feels to you. Have you ever picked up a friends radio and wondered ,"how in the hell does he fly with this thing"? Same scenario. Go with what feels like YOU have the best control over. Feel free to experiment as well, thats half of what this hobby is.

Have Fun!!

Its a personal preference i fly with the pinch style. People who use thumbs tend to have more expo than people who fly with pinched becuase with pinched fingers you have more preciosn but with expo you can do fine with either!

Think about how you write, thumb and forefinger. It gives more control when going multiple directions, so in theory it is better. Though to each his own.

I fly thumbs only. Thats how I started thats how i'll end, i've tried to switch but it just doesnt feel right... I dont know about more precision with the pinch method vs. the thumb method though, I feel im very precise in my maneuvers but as bmm stated I do use a fair amount of expo...

I guess you just have to do what feels right to you.

I write with just my thumbs too..... I noticed my thumbs start to shake as I get older SO I tried this winter to switch using the sim but I just can't get comfortable with the pinch method. I'm doomed to be a shakey dumb thumber...

Tom..... No "D" flying....

I forgot "Should I fly with a tray, with a strap or neither?"

I use a heavy duty camera strap (the ones with the padded material for a feeling of less weight and more comfort). I can fly w/o but im definitely less comfortable. As for the trays I dont really like them personally there just bulky and feel really awkward (just my opinion).

Both

I use both methods. Left hand is pinch, right had is thumbs. I learned this because my first radio had a ratchet throttle, I needed both the thumb and the finger to hold it in-between the ratchets to get a steady hover.

I still fly that way, it feels comfortable.

I'd rather be flying

I've been flying for more than 25 year's. I've heard all the pros and cons about thumbs and thumbs/forefingers. My observations, do what feels most comfortable. I see extreem flying with planes and heli's using both methods. Many swear that the "pinch method" gives greater control, I believe in general terms this is BS. It might be true for some, if they have shakey thumbs. IMO, more important than the control method; is the coordination, eyes, and brain link of the pilot with his hands! Same logic as to use of transmitter tray, neck strap, etc.. I've always flown with thumbs, and without neck strap or tray. For extreem flight, I have always felt my thumbs can move faster than my thumbs plus a finger! Especially since things happen very fast with a heli. But again, to each his own! Pilots should use whatever radio features/control methods make them feel most comfortable!

I guess I should have been more direct. To each his own, equates to do what feels right, whatever you learn is what you should do. If it doesnt feel right dont do it. It takes time either way, practice, practice, and patience. Have fun and it doesnt matter.

I do it with both kindof..
thumb on the stick, but my forefinger isn't on the back of the TX. It's on the front, right by the stick. Sometimes, I almost find myself starting to pinch. I'm in between thumbs and pinching I guess
