To at least some this will sound completely stupid but so far it has worked for me and I would approximate in the neighborhood of a hundred or so deals from places and people such as those that frequent here. Here is my secret and I have to tell you upfront I wasn't the one who came up with it but here goes: " Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." If we would all do this, then, no problems.

Policing up our own

There is risk with every transaction. None of us would do internet transactions if we didn't think we were going get a great deal on something we need or want.

This board has done a great job of looking out for everyone and pointing out those that have ripped off others. I commend those who have help out there fellow R/C'er from getting ripped off.

Pictures atleast allow you to confirm that the item is as described.

Communication is the next key. Is the seller forth right with information. Can the buyer confirm the sellers is who he/she claims to be. Phone numbers and addresses help here. Being able to research especially from the feedback supplied here on the good guy board is great. Or just simply asking, "Does anybody know Joe Blow and his helo?" helps.

It would be great if personal info was required or if you could get a password to access the info during a sale but once again have private info on the internet in a non-secure site can also have it's liabilites. Not everyone trust the technology yet....for good reason.

Unfortunately, bottem line is you can get ripped off at your own front door. Caveat Exemptor, "Let the buyer beware.

Keep up the great threads like this one!
Sorry about getting so wordy. But this was a subject near and dear to my heart!

Credit card can't be max'ed I have more up grades to buy!

Rating system for buyers/sellers.....

yes, I know......and I have an ebay rating too......but at least it would provide some measure of info on a potential buyer or seller.....

I have personally stepped in and arbitrated a deal that was causing some stress to both parties AND members of the board here. I didn't ask for any compensation, or commendation......I just handled it. As it turns out, both parties have since sold items on RR and there was nothing but good comments from those transactions.

I would suggest this, Mark......get a few folks that would be willing to spend the time and effort to help arbitrate any deals that are "hung up" or that one or both parties are not satisfied.......

A final thought.......KNOW YOUR TRADING PARTNER.......find out what you need to know......home phones, ect.......if you have a feeling it is not right......then PASS ON THE DEAL. Its your goods/money.....and your gut is a great indicator on whats up.

I find myself looking at the number of posts someone makes when they put up an item for sale.....although I shouldn't. It matters NOT if they have 3 or 3000 posts......I still need to feel "good" about this before I commit .

Pay-POO is just that..although I use it all the time.......it IS fast.....but if you get into the wringer, well......your still kinda on your own.

The Good Guy list.....27 pages worth?? and counting?? Like I am gonna sort thru it every time a deal pops up???/ That is why I suggest a guage of feedback........

Mark, you have a nice place here.....and you really do your best to stay out of the bull**** (yes, I expect you to edit that) that sometimes flies around here......I hope YOU are ready to tackle this situation if a set of "rules" or better termed......."EXPECTATIONS" are implimented. From experience.......sometimes you just cannot make everyone happy......your best bet is to make everyone play on the same table. For the number of transactions that go on here.....we really have a minimum amount of problems......and those that think they are getting pinched will speak up loud and clear.....

Good Luck, guys and gals......let me know what we come up with!

Rating System

I think that a rating system with Happy faces for sucsessful sales and Sad faces for unsucsessful faces might be a help in deciding who is trustworthy.

The only problem is how do you prevent this from artifically being inflated to make an untrusted seller look trustworthy.

Another way is to do Address verification. This would require your members to signup using a valid credit card and if you have a merchant account you can perform an address verification of the billing address of the credit card. How well this would be received is another dilema?

Mark, if you would like to pick my brain a little, feel free to communicate with me private. I would be more than happy to help in any way I can. I think what you have here is great and if I can assist in any way, feel free.

But most of all, I think you should not try and perform this task. It can become a major task to try an police this type of service. You should have some kind on indemification to protect yourself from any fraud that takes place rom this great service.

Mark,

See this thread I made selling a 9Z back on 9/21/02. As you can see, I disclosed all the "seller details" up front, just like any seller should. The photos I deleted off the server, after a few months went by...

I hope something changes for the better around here!

Hey Guys,
If you use this link (click here). You will be taken to the "Good Guy List" which will be displayed all on one page (for those of you on slower connections it might take a minute to load).
You can then press and hold your Ctrl key, then press your F key (or go to your Edit menu and select Find). Then type in part or all of the username of the person you want to find.

Easy as 1-2-3

Perhaps a new post with this link should be stickeyed and locked in the For Sale forum.

The only thing I have noticed with the "Good Guy List" is that most of the people on it are the sellers. I think on the rare occassion you will find the name of the buyer who has made proper payment in a timely fashion. Wouldn't you consider a person that has made full payment for an item a "Good Guy" also? I guess this would be more up to the seller to post the name of a buyer who was good to deal with. If a person buys things normally and has a good rating as a buyer it would be a pretty good guess that they would be a good seller also. If there name is not in the Good Guy list then who's to know. I think both the buyer and seller should list one anothers name in the list if their deal went through with each others satisfaction. I like the way Ebay uses a
"feedback" rating system but I doubt a similar system would be able to be used here on R.R..

Buying and Selling

The best deals I have encountered have been when there is a lot of communication either by e-mail or telephone. I know there is risk of buying and selling on here, but the good far out weighs the bad.
Here are my tips for selling and buying from experiences in retail and wholesale.

Seller: List as much info as possible and include a picture of the item if possible since it will usually generate more sales. Answer e-mails in order and respond timely.

Payment: If you would like to recieve payments faster then sign up with Paypal. The fees are kind of hefty, but are a lot less then what business owners have to pay on credit card transactions. Also make sure buyers are verified and ship only to a confirmed address if there is any suspicion. If you take money orders make sure the buyer sends it priority and with signature confirmation so they know who recieved it.

Packaging: Always package items with foam peanuts and bubble wrap because if it can't move then it will not usually break. Most box stores or packaging stores sell them for a lot less then Wal-mart. I buy a 5ft X 3ft bag of peanuts from the Love box company for 12.99 and it last a long time. And, also a 3ft wide roll of bubble wrap for 10.99 which beats the little one for 5.00 at wal-mart.

Shipping: From 2 years of shipping with UPS on a daily basis they are one of the worst shippers. They are cheap compared to the USPS, but USPS delivers in half the time and actually honors the insurance claims. UPS will pick up the damaged package and blame it on you for not packaging correctly. If you ship by UPS they include a tracking number and insurance for 100.00, but remember to buy extra iinsurance if applicable. If you use USPS make sure you buy delivery confirmation, insurance, and signature confirmation. The best way to keep the buyer informed is to mail them the tracking number or delivery confirmation number so you do not get e-mails everyday asking where is their stuff.

Buyers: Ask as many ?'s as possible before the transaction so that you do not get stuck with something you did not know. If you are unsure of something then get a name and phone number to call the seller. Most sellers will answer your request as long as they are not out of line. If they do not bother to help you then do not bother to buy. Also search for the buyers name on past sales or other forums

Payment: If paying by Paypal try to check if they are verified since that requires a traceable bank account and do buy the seller protection they now make you pay for. It will cover fraud if you do not recieve the package and the seller has no shipping proof. If you pay by Money order put what it is for and your address and name. Also send it via USPS Priority mail with signature and delivery confirmation. If it is ever lost just go to the place of purchase and get a money order tracing form. It takes about 1-2 weeks and they will send you a copy of the money order if it has been cashed to show you who and what bank cashed it. If it has not been cashed then they will send you back a check for the mount minus the fee for tracing which is $4.00-8.00.

When the stuff comes: If it is by UPS, make the guy stay and open it in front of him. Have him note anything broken if possible at that time. If you find something broken later, call them and file a claim. I have yet to recover insurance from them, but you might get lucky. USPS items can be taken to them and looked over at the Post office.

Problems with Sellers:
1. Try to e-mail or call them and discuss things out. 2 out of 3 times it is usally a misunderstanding that can be worked out the first time and remember to be open-minded. Name calling is not a good way to start out a conversation and we are no longer in elementry.

2. If they do not understand reason or if you are just hot headed, get a 3rd person to mediate and present both sides of the story. Paypal will initiate a 30 day mediation if you file a complaint. Sellers will have to send proof of shipment and buyers have to send proof of payment as well as sides of the story.

3. If you did not recieve the item:
a. Ask for shipping info ie: tracking, delivery confirmation, or a receipt. If they do not have either then they probably did not send it.
b. If they stop responding to e-mails or phone calls then you have probably just been scammed.
c. Contact paypal or your credit card service. Money orders need to file a trace at the place of purchase.
d. Contact your states consumer protection agency and file a complaint. They can track the guy down for you no matter what state he is in for free. They will get you your money back or file fraud charges on the guy and hopefully convict him. That is how a guy got nabbed on Ebay ripping people off about $5,000.00

Hopefully this helps,
I was able to get my money recently back thanks to the help of fellow RR members and a complaint to Paypal.

Remember to protect yourself as a seller and a buyer because the Law is always on your side unless you are on the opposite side of it.

I like delemieux' buzzword: communication

I have had one deal where I had to ride the seller for information, and he couldn't seem to just say "i sent it using @@@ shipping on the $$$ date"...then the buyer has to say the same thing about the money.

The list has grown too long to care about anymore, and it reflects only one or two transactions with the said named individual.

Not having bought or sold on RR I beleive if a transaction is started on this site it should be followed through to the end with comments to all to read how the deal went. Peer pressure can have a positive effect on the outcome.

Here is my small input...hehe

When buying...always use a credit card if you can. Most cards have some sort of buyer protection...this way if the deal goes through you can file a claim and hopefully get all your money back. Most credit card companies won't charge you for something you purchased but never received

I wish there was a standard on how we should respond to the seller.

The first to email, PM, or reply? Which is considered the first to get a crack at the sellers goods??
