Free RR Classifieds - Deals Gone Bad

Please post your ideas on how to conduct successful transactions.

Explain how to conduct a transaction from beginning to end. Payment options, shipping options, escrow options and so forth.

Please pay attention to each of the 11 classified forum classification notices. They should be understood before creating new classified topics. This will help keep things more organized across all the classifieds.

The classifieds are provided as a free service. With RR’s limited resources, classifieds need to be self serve and community policed.

Work the system by using the following links:
My Classified Activity
My Classified Feedback
Add Classified Feedback

Please do not double post your ad across multiple RR forums.

Only RC related items will be allowed unless you state “For Trade”.

RunRyder does not moderate deals gone bad.

Buyer beware! RunRyder cannot vouch for any seller's or buyer's credibility and will not accept responsibility for any transactions resulting from the use of this site.

Please post your knowledge of any unscrupulous activity directly in the topic involved. Due to time constraints, classifieds are hands off for me and I will not get involved unless it gets mean or nasty.

I have had very successful transactions using the "Tradiator" service, they serve as an escrow agent for either the buyer OR the seller, depending on who is paying them.

I don't believe they handle trades (so their name may be a bit of a misnomer...)

Always, always ship with insurance. It is very cheap, usally from a 1.50 to 3, 4 dollars depending on the value of the item shipped. It also gives you some proof of shipping.

buy/sell

I have made a practice of attempting to establish referrals in the marketplace. If I know someone who knows the buyer/seller, it helps.
I also try to speak with the person on the phone if it's a helicopter deal or something with some major bucks involved. Somehow, that rapport helps me feel right about the deal.
I always ship with insurance and /or via UPS or Fedex where a signature proof of delivery is obtained.
I ask the buyer/seller to confirm the deal is done correctly by email after the fact.
So far I've had excellent experience with everyone I've dealt with here and on ebay.

thanks, Mark. Great service!

I do not think your phone # should be out there for all to read. If you are in the process of buying/selling this info could be exchanged privately.

Seller- Full profile prior to being able to sell items. Items should be described in as much detail as possible with pics if possible. Describe what payment methods you require, any s/h charges and a timeframe for shipping: All shipped items should have some form of tracking #, USPS, UPS, etc. Insure all items over ???$$ For high dollar (pick an amount) items use an escrow service...Do not make this site a place for bidding wars. I like the first come first serve idea, but as a buyer do not drag your feet. If one buyer is thinking and another has cash????

Buyer- RR cannot be held responsible for sour transactions. Be sure of the item, as much as possible, get references, pics, feedback before dealing with someone new. Get valid contact info from the seller. Call them on the phone and discuss how the transaction is to go.

Any disputes over transactions should not immediately result in an online bashing. There has to be some way to mediate these disputes...any ideas??? A mediator other than Mark???

Any person found to be intentionally defrauding any other person on this site should be banned. Some form of validating this fraud needs to be in place. I know this is not really specific, but has helped me in having successful transactions here.

Can we do something about the lousy E_Bay links being posted
in the for sale forum. It says "For Sale, Swap and Wanted"
Not "E-Bay LINKS".
Nor does the forum title say "For Sale, Swap and Wanted, and bidding"
Its very frustrating to see a link to ebay in our forum without stating
that you will pull it from ebay for a RR member with a set price.
If its for sale at ebay but you are willing to pull it for a RR sale
I dont see a problem, it would still be for sale not auction.

SELLER: City, State, County (buyer can later use this info in case of fraud)

Item(s) for sale with requested cost of item(s) or best offer etc

Age/Condition of Item

Acceptable forms of Payment. I think that sellers stating money orders only set themselves up to be accused. Maybe all transactions taking place openly here on RR should have to take place through paypal, let paypal be the initial moderator of disputes. If you privately participate in a transaction under any other system tough luck. Paypal is free and it has a system in place to settle disputes.

Will be Shipped via: xyz with tracking numbers upon shipment

References here on RR, Paypal verification etc.

Just Brainstorming...??

I don't think there's a totally safe way for the buyer or seller. Mostly this all works on using common sense. Someone mentioned talking on the phone and this certainly helps, a crook doesn't want to be called after he scams you. References are very important, also most people have a track record elsewhere, I always offer my eBay rating since it's almost 1000 and that helps most feel comfortable dealing with me. Also just getting as much info on the buyer/seller helps such as place of business, etc... An email address helps to show some info on a person, not to say Hotmail, MSN, ATTBI or any of those are a bad thing, but when a person is using his work address helps. I'd have to say all my dealings on RunRyder have worked out great and I have no complaints.

"rockcrawler" eBay is part of life, this was on another thread and don't think it relates to this one. But this forum is also to point out a good deal to other flyers when they're available so why not on eBay as well.

My two cents

Ray

Ask for Personal

I'm with Wallace....exchange of personal information such as location, age, phone number, etc. should be at the discreation of the buyer/seller, and exchanged through emails to them. I don't think that much information should be mandatory and kept in the profile for everyone to see.

It's a "crap shoot" The only thing you could do is correspond with the other party and maybe exchange phone numbers. Call the person involved and maybe you can get a feel of them. I sold something to someone here that I don't know and it turns out that he actually has flown at my field and he lives across the country. He comes here often for business and he thinks he met me. I don't want to be blind sided by someone that I don't know over a few lousy dollars. If I sell, I put pics and tracking numbers and follow up. I use "traceable money" (paypal, credit card, US postal money order) Always use insurance and delivery confirmation. Its worth the extra $1.50. Lastly it's trusting someone you don't know which brings me back to "it's a crap shoot" and thankfully for me it has come up all 7's. Buyer Beware

Ship the merchandise first so the buyer can touch , feel and
inspect to make sure he or she is getting what they purchase,
sight unseen can be costly , I would take the same approach
of buying something from the store at least we can get hands
on before we buy it , that way we are not buying junk or some-
ones used problem child. Boy I cant wait to see how this one
flies

Like a rock! Just as many dishonest buyers as sellers, that just changes which end gets stuck.

To put it simply:

It starts with your profile. Real info.
A real e-mail address through your ISP, not ustink@hotmail.com
Phone numbers through a PM.
Photos and more photos.
An escrow service or Pay Pal.
Traceable shipping with insurance.
Trust and luck.
My experience has been 50-50. The gripe I have is; after you have received the goods, you get an e-mail from the seller suddenly saying what is wrong with what you purchased.

Trust

Buyers need to look up a person on the "Good Guy List" or check the profile. Ask questions of the seller. I believe no matter what you do online there is an element of risk.

Sellers need to be descriptive and provide pictures if possible, they also need to respond to inquiries in a timely fashion.

Payment should be done in a way to create a paper trail. Use PayPal, Tradiator, Money order sent certified, etc...

buying and selling

I am relatively new to RC, but not to buying and selling over the internet.

Buying:
1. Ask for pictures of specific areas if you have any question about condition of an item.
2. Work with the seller, if possible, on getting to know who he is. There may be other people you know on here that have dealt with them before. Ask them for references. I also always try to get their phone number. If I question if it is real, I call them.
3. I always send a USPS Money Order for my purchases and add Delivery Confirmation to the Priority Mail when I ship it. I provide the tracking number to the seller. that way he knows I sent something and I know when it is delivered. If it is a large amount of money, your personal opinion, send it registered.

Selling:
1. Always request some kind of tracking on the money, at least you know something has been sent. You also know when it leaves his town and arrives in your town.

I personally do not like shipping UPS. I mostly use USPS, they have let me down once. I once sent a USPS Money Order, Priority Mail from Maryland to Washington State. It took eight days, I think the pack mule had a heart attack going over the mountains.
UPS on the other hand has let me down five times in the same period. Most recently they tried to deliver a package at my house at 3:07 PM. I arrived home at 3:12 PM. I called and arranged to pick up the package at the distribution center at 6:30 PM. I got there early, about 6:05. I ended up leaving at about 7:10PM, their suggestion, they couldn't find the package. They did bring me a package during the time I was there, it was someone elses. BTW, this was not a small package, it was a complete helicopter.

There are no perfect systems to buying or selling on the internet. Your only hope is to work with people as honest as you are. Locks and alarms are for keeping honest people honest. If a crook wants what you have, it's his. Barettas are first rate protection, at least I take a crowd with me.
