Hi,
Would anybody be able to give me a link to basic gear cutting.
I have a lathe as well as a milling machine and would like to
start cutting some straight spur gears.

Thanks,
Trevor.

Hey KCT,

Thanks for the link.

Creep,
As you can see by my trials there is much more to it than just cutting some slots Acutally if you invest in the right cutter (has the shape of the tooth) I can't imagine it would not work. You can also grind your own for the shape of the tooth you need.

Good luck,

Having the machine isn't nearly as important as having the right tools. In this case you will need a`small involute cutter of the right diametral pitch for the gear that you are cutting, not to mention the stub arbor to hold the cutter besides having a method of holding the part and indexing it accurately. You will also need to know what the module, pressure angle and backlash is prior to making the calculations.

I have cut my own gears using only a lathe, milling machine, rotary table, and lots of work. I made my own cutter to cut the correct shape of the gear for the pitch I wanted. I should of bought the gears but it was the challange of doing my own. The picture is of the two I made for a small hit and miss engine.

If you want, pm me with your address and I will mail you a copy of the procedure. It was from an artical in Home Machinist on cutting your own spur gears.

Support bacteria. They're the only culture some people have. !

I think a spin fixture(hardinge called by some) and a surface grinder would be the hot setup. The spin fixture is usually limited by angle increments so you could be out of luck depending on how many teeth the gear had. Its easy to dress wheels though but how many people have a surface grinder and angle dresser.

If I were going to do it, I would turn a piece of aluminum up to its finished size and hand it to the guy that runs our EDM machines. Thats that hot setup but EDM cuts metal only.
