Compass Knight 50 > Knight sport tail jump

My knight 50 sport has a tail jump. What I mean is the tail occasionally just seems like its skipping a tooth on the gear or something. How tight does the belt tension need to be? Do you think thats what the problem is????? I'm rather new to Helis so any help is appreciated. The tail will move out of the position held by the GY401 gyro then go right back but it doesn't seem right. My Knight Pro doesn't do this.

How old is the engine? Could be a bad rear bearing.

I also had the same experience with my trex. It could be static build up.

Must have more POWER!

I wouldn't think static buildup. Would'nt a PCM reciever take care of that. I only have 4 flights on the airframe motor and gyro. So I don't think its a bearing problem but there is a kind of rattling noise that also seemed odd but I thought it might just be gears breaking in or something. Its a little noiser than my pro version Knight 50. I had the Gyro gain originally at 75 percent on my gear channel (JR 7202) I turned it down to 60 percent with no real change. Except the tail blew out in fast inverted backward flight.

What I think causing the tail jump is that the belt is too loose, or some broken teeth in the couter gear. Check the counter gear out!! If the counter gear is plastic, then change to alu or superlene one.
When mentioning the tightness of the belt, my idea is you may force pushing your finger straight on the belt and once the belt gives little flexibility by that force. That's ok then.

I believe belt tension is correct I will change counter gear to aluminium one and see if that helps. I think the noise I refered to earlier was coming from the counter gear as well. A nice cheap fix. Other than this minor problem I love this heli It flys awesome and gives me the confidence to try manovers I wouldn't think of with a more expensive heli. Overall a great machine.

Have a look at the start shaft and main engine gear bearing. Mine are very noisey and I'm going to replace them soon. This may be a cause of radio interference

Also it depends on what pipe you are running. I have the same experience switching from my stock pipe to the MPII. I was not running the headspeed high enough and the engine skip/or misses and the tail will kick. If you can hear the tone of the engine missing while the tail is jumping, it is more than likely your tuning and headspeed.

Houstonrevo That may well be the problem. See if this sounds right. I'm running a OS 50 Hyper with revolution pipe and a CY ATG running 1800 rpm on the head. I didn't really do any break in on the Motor just bolted it in and started flying. I just have it set to the point were it isn't getting to hot and idles reliably. 3 second test on the backplate. Do you think my headspeed should be higher and what is max rpm for this model?

I have never run a governor or a revolution pipe. When do these tail kicks happen? When you are hovering? When you are doing climb out? If it is just hovering then more than likely tuning. I have only experience with my old caliber 5 with stock pipe and MPII and MPII likes the head speed around 1800-1900 rpm. May be someone can chime in about how a governor affects the smooth running of a motor.

When I did not tune my engine right (too rich on the low and high end) and running a tuned pipe, I will see tail kick during hover but when I do forward flights and climb out where I put a little more throttle (higher head speed) then the tail kicks go away.

Hope this helps.

MP2 and head speed. not sure of. but revolution and hyper nad the knight seem to like the 1950 to 2000 range.

Thanks Rodney I set the rpm on my ATG to 1900 and changed tail blades and it seemed to have cured most of my tail kick. All I did was hover a bit in the front yard but it seemed pretty smooth. There were a couple of small jumps but it seemed to be much better. I was kind of afraid to run my head speed to high on the plastic sport. I thought it might not take as much rpm as the all metal version. My Pro version is set on 1950 head speed and it seems very happy there. How much is to much headspeed??

not sure how much is to much. I have run it at 2000 with good results.
Better have a good blade on it tho. I have been running RotorTechs,
