If Spektrum was smart, they would have designed the modules so they would work in the 9z as well as 9c. After all, the 9z modules work in the 9c, just not the other way around.

Actually they do work, I have an 8U Super and 9Z and tried it after someone tipped me off that it works. Did double the range check that I normally would and it works fine.

I never tried it, I did the 9z in the 9z, but had read that the c didn't work in the z. Pretty cool, I wonder why Futaba says not to do it.

I thought the same thing since that is what Futaba says, until someone on one of the forums PMed me and said that it does work. Have been swapping back and forth for several months with a couple different channels and it works fine.
