QuickWorldWide Ep and Wet Fuel Helis > Octane Dominator Owners..How's your maintenance?

Hey, I was just wondering what kind of service you OD owners are getting out of your machines? I have to be honest, the only thing that I have had to do to my machine is replace the tail shaft bearings......and I'm pretty sure this was my fault. I keep checking the frame bolts and bearings and nothing is comming loose!!! This is my first gasser, and I thought the maintenance would be higher on vibration related things, being it is a gasser. Maybe this is partly due to the engine isolation mounts. I've probably flown about 6.5 gallons of fuel through it now, and honetly is has been no more maintenace than my nitro ship.

So my only issue was with the tail bearings....pretty sure the problem was that I was using too spacers on either side of the tail pulley that were too thick (homemade). I have recieved several messages about the gasser performance and durability, so I thought we should start a thread. Owners of the OD chime in.

Maybe no one out there has to do any work to theirs.... That's a good thing.

Still going strong after 7 gallons. Only problems are due to the pilot

Just an update on the reliability of the OD 26cc.

I would first like to state that this heli was built without any filing or grinding of any kind. I did absolutely no "mods" on the airframe during the build process. I just put it together.....

I have over 70 hours on the airframe now and suffered a recent crash, so I thought I would seperate the top frame from the bottom to do some "spring cleaning" on the airframe and bearings. I really like how you can "take the top off" of this heli and pretty much get to anything with ease.

To my pleasant suprise, I found that all of the bearings were in good shape and had no notchy-ness and were very smooth. The only bearings that I had replaced before this tear down were the two in the top main shaft block, which was the result of a previous crash. The bearings in the clutch block and bottom main shaft (where the thrust is also) were super smooth. The countershaft bearings were also in excellent shape....and I truely didn't expect that.

I have replaced the head dampner o-rings once previously, and I will replace them now, but that is just for posterity. They do have some wear, but were still very flyable.

I will replace the tail bearings in the cnc tail, but once again it wasn't needed, they were still very acceptable.

So far I have been impressed with this heli in it's flyability and durability. Maybe not being a stick banging 3d pilot has something to do with it....not sure. I tend to think that since the heli has such a rigid frame with metal bearing blocks it tends not to wear as prematurely because nothing is allowed to shift or flex in flight. I know that point can be argued.

I guess the only thing that could be complained about is the fan shroud. It is not centered on the engine. I know that QWW has addressed this in the latest design, but I can say that I have not had one minutes trouble with the shroud as far as clearance or affecting the cooling of the engine.....it just don't look "pretty".

That's all for now
Happy flying!!

Hey shuttlepilot, I do not own a Gaser yet, but I do own a 60 QWW heli and have no problems and there is no reason to belive I would have any with a QWW gaser. I have read alot BS on here from other members (NO NAMES) and it is sad that they have notthing better to do than whine about something are another. When they should use there head a little to work out a problem. I have eight helis in all from Elec. to 60 size all differnt brands and they all have a problem sooner or later. I for one glad to see your are doing well with your QWW gaser and keep up the good work.

Sad Reality

My eye has been caught by the Octane Dominator ads here, no doubt.

I am in the market for a gasser, Bergen is out, I won;t consider it.

So, I am looking at Spectra G , Predator Carbon NX, or this Octane Dominator.

The lack of a fan club for this bird makes me think it's time to pare down the "list" one more. I never take one persons opinion , and can see through the disgruntled customer bits, even the mistakes and complaining of some customers.

But, where is the record of great success with this bird? Please point me to it.

And, if there is ONE person is Chicagoland that has one, drop me a note, I want to see it, touch it, feel it, if you don't mind....

If there are videos , or better yet, competition records of success' I would like to see them . I want a battle tested bird, one with a few trophies won with it.

Is this perhaps a scale set of mechanics, and not a competition bird?

I had success today for 50 mins of flight before a bolt snapped.
I was lucky there was no damage. Now i have to swap out the supplied bolts in mechanics for bolts whose quality i can trust.

So in summary for me, for 2 hours of flight i have spent 100 + hours in build and maintance.

bolts don't just break

ALL THE HARDWARE WE HAVE EVER USED IS 12.9 DIN that is above standard.
Please tell me what screw broke?

Glad to hear you are finally flying the machine...QWW

I would also like to know which bolt broke. I have never really had a "bolt break" that resulted in a crash. I have bent some spindles and tail shafts, but I can't think of a bolt ever "breaking" in flight. On any of the brands of heli that I have owned.

I had a bolt break on the exhaust of my car one time......but I didn't go and replace all of the others on it..

Please share the context and specific bolt that broke so maybe you won't have to go and "replace all of the bolts".

Let's please try to keep this thread on track and not steer it in a direction that doesn't provide useful information.

I had a "Jesus" bolt break on my .50 Raptor in flight, but , it was the wrong bolt for the job. I did not build the heli (bought it used) and the person that built it,they used the wrong bolt , it was an all threaded bolt with no shoulder, coarse thread at that .. No wonder it broke..

Jimbo,

You know I've had read many threads about the "jesus bolt" but I didn't even think of it when I posted because I've never had one break on me.....knock on wood. I have bent a blade bolt before on one of my old shuttles but got it down when I noticed the blades flutter. Like your experience....but it was my fault....I had used an all threaded bolt.

GOOD POINT

There are several places on the all machines that REQUIRE a shank bolt
"Jesus bolt
Blade Grips fore & aft..
Lower main shaft "JB"

All custom made... I stock some, but should be included in our kits.

The bolt that sheared was the lower JB that goes thru the gear cluster and main shaft. I was lucky to have just spooled down to check the fuel level (after 12 mins). On spool up there was no power transmition.

FOr my own peace of mind i will be swappng out the 2 JB's for shoulder bolts.

Now I make sure to use shoulder bolts in all of these places in all of my helis , even the headblock to shaft bolt too.

The Jesus bolt on the OD 20cc I'm building is a shouldered bolt. It seems like revisions are made to these kits as time goes on, and you to an early one.

The head bolt and the "jesus bolt" on the OD 26 were both shoulder bolts in my kit that I bought back in 06. Also the blade bolts were shoulder.
