Gasser Model RC Helicopters > rpm loss from eng

flew my xl gas the other day and on approach to hover I could hear the rpms dropping down fast. landed the helie and pulled power back towards idle but not all the way. eng respond towards idle but when I tried bringing the power back in it would not accellerate to high rpm then as I pulled back towards idle she just died for good. Have fuel to eng and have spark got it to fire one time and never again. compression feels pretty good but carbon on piston head and plug is a little black. low needles at 1 1/8 high is 1 1/4. checked filter screen in carb checked good. looks like an eng teardown for further inspection. Anyone got any ideas I may of missed other than not getting it setup like Bill told me too.

tore eng down and found carbon on piston head and top of piston but coil gap to magnet seems wide anyone know what this gap is for the g23?

Ron, get you a reg business card...This is what I use to set the gap on the coil...

All I can tell you on the setup is to just do it...You have got two engines now, and you are going down the same path....If you are not sure about each step, I will guide you thru it.

Thanks for the info Bill. Plan on working on the eng this weekend and If I run into a snag I'll give a yell.
Any local stores carry amsoil or is it mail order only ?

We find it at the local Honda motorcycle dealer. It's popular with the two stroke crowd. Be sure to buy the Amsoil that says 100:1, as Amsoil offers other products, in similar packaging.

Plug Gap: .024 ~ .025 inch.

Are you using a two-cycle, air-cooled engine oil in your mix?

replaced the plug with new , no change. I was running yama-lube 5 oz to a gal, 24 to 1. Thats gonna change once I get it put back together. Setup will be like Bill recommends.
Bill, should I idle the eng on a tank to breakin again? I'm putting new rings and piston on as well.

Yes, let it idle for at least a half a tank... I want you to call me, with the radio charged, so we can go over everything on the throttle pitch. I want to make sure you have it right, once you have everything ready...

Bill

I'll get in touch as soon as I get finished up. Got side tracked this weekend and had to fly to Andersson S.C.
Will this yama-lube work on these settings or should I get amsoil?

Amsoil on order be here wednesday nite, eng reinstalled. That may be a very short flight under the hood. I guess it all depends on how fast we could run. Talk about throwing money in the air!!!! Now for the next question Bill. My Benzin trainer has been running the same setup on fuel oil ratio but for only maybe a gal or so. Can this one be a convert also without a teardown or does that all depond on carbon build etc.? It's running fine but I thought that with the xl also.

Ron,

Your Benzin will be doing the samething soon if you don't....you need to be 1 1/8 on the high , and 1 3/8s on the low on the RC 230 Benzin..You may need to lean out the lowend about 1/32 or so on the low needle till it smooths out...Run 1.5 ounces to gallon of 87 octane..
You can run a gallon of Coleman fuel , that will clean it out, if you do, run 2 ounces of oil

Bill
