I've been using a Hitachi 18V cordless drill, worked to start up a 50 all the way to a brand spankin new OS .91 PS with no problem. The rpms haven't been a issue, its just a slight bit above idle and works perfect, IMO a lot of the hobby starters over crank a engine.

Does the lithium setup have built in voltage control ??? For both over draw in amps and low voltage cutoff ??? Wouldnt imagine too big of deal but would be expensive to have a whoops....

I have personally gone through:

1 Standard Hobbico starter - barely enough power to start a 50
1 Hydratork starter - Blew the 2 gear sets gears out trying to start YS91 engines
1 Century Geared starter - Burned up motor, broken gears.
1 14.4V Cordless drill - eventually blew the gears out of it on YS91
2 18V Cordless drills - again, gears destroyed on OS91 and YS91 engines.

I now have a Dynatron using 24V worth of EMOLI (6) cells out of a Milwaukee drill pack. I couldn't be happier. I will turn over anything and turn it over fast. EMOLI cells hold charge a good long time. No gears to blow out. Using the Miniature Aircraft adapter plate to hold the batteries.

Well.. I could be happier. It would be nice to have a battery adapter for the entire Milwaukee 28V pack like the one listed earlier for the smaller pack.

My opinion: Don't waste a minute on anything that has gears.

There are a few directions you can go for what might be the BEST cordless.

To me BEST is..

Power
Durability
Ease of charging

The Dynatron is the power king.
Dynatron is the durability king.
Snap-in high AH battery packs finish it off.

Cordless drills may work but in my opinion don't fall into the BEST category.

Walleye,

The Makita instructions only say for longer battery life, charge the battery before it becomes fully discharged.

Basically when you notice a major drop in performance, you charge it.

Put together a setup with the black battery holders for the rc car batts... 3300 mah x2 7 cell...

Wish I had the $$$$$$ for the dyna and lith, but that will come when the 16 volts kills the hobbico... till then it should be great...

Thanks for all the help guys... the setup I made spins the 50 hyper much better than the 12volt setup I was using (shows greatly in the cold)...

That's a great setup! What method are you going to use to charge the batteries?

One at a time with a Triton... charged both (added 2800 mah) in about 40 minutes a piece at 3.0 amp charge rate. Also the Hobbico swings the 50 nice with the extra voltage.... may try in our blizzard tomorrow :-(

I have moved to a Dynatron with 2X3S LiPo's and haven't looked back...the keyless drill chuck kept working loose on me. Aaargh.

What are you think about this starter (K&S - No.1358)?

Hey there!
For a long time I´m looking for a wireless/ cordless starter. Now, I have found this one from K&S and I am interested in your opinions!

http://www.ks-j.net/kands/E_KS/sub_windw.cgi?1358

(K&S No.1358 - High torque starter developed for .90 size engine. Comes with KS Hex Starter Shaft DF, Battery Holder and other accessories)

What are you think about this one?

Can you recommend this part and what will it cost and where can I buy it?

Many thanks for your contributions

I have had my Dynatron for 25 YEARS. No issues. That thing would start airplanes on dead 12V batteries with ease when lesser 12V starters (including other Sullivan's!) couldn't even turn them over. I was 13 when I bought that thing. I wanted the best and I got it!

I DID just order the Makita battery adapter thought. I have the drill already, so this is a cheap upgrade and it REALLY integrates well with the starter.

I went all out with the dynatron/fineredge/makita setup and couldn't be happier. Its more then I wanted to spend but I plan on being in this hobby for a long time so I figure its money well spent plus I got a spiffy new drill out of the deal.

If you don't want to drop a lot of cash at least go with a dynatron and power it with rc batteries for now, you can always get the makita set up later.

Dynatron with the Finer Edge adaptor here. The package wasn't cheap but it's the last one I'll probably ever need.

I have used screwguns with a cut off 6mm ball end wrench to start my 50. The Dynatron/Makita is far, far better.

Treat me good, I'll treat you better. Treat me bad, I'll treat you worse.
