The canopy is strong enough just like Raptor one. I did crash many times and it's still useable.

Got a question for you all.

Put the main gear/main mask/tail belt/boom on. When I turn the main gear by hand, I will hear a slight rubbing sound from time to time. I thought it was the clutch liner rubbing the clutch bell so I took the whole main gear assembly off and turn the clutch by hand and everthing was quiet.

Reinstalled everything and tried again and still the sound. Turn the mail gear backwards- no sound, turn the tail belt pulley by it self - no sound. Turn the main gear with the tail pulley together then you can hear it intermittenly again. Sounds just like a new clutch rubbing slightly on the liner.

Any idea? Should I be concern?

houston,

I think you answered your own question.
It ddoes sounds like the clutch liner rubbing a little on the clutch or maybe some epoxy used to glue the liner.

I'm betting after one flight it will disappear.

I would not worry about it.

Rubbing

My loosened up a lot after the first flight. I would fly it and check it after the flight...

The rubbing was in the clutch. It was more than likely the glue. When I push down on the start shaft receptical, it would make that faint rubbing noise. I get it was the glue on the clutch bell rubbing against the clutch. NO big deal

Just thought you guys might want to know I was in a hobby shop in OKC city yesterday and the owner had 2 or 3 of the knight 3D's on the shelf. I'm sure he would be more than happy to ship them out. He seems to be a great guy to work with. I would have bought it myself but I allready have 3 knight helicopters. His name on runryder is smallscalepilot you might shoot him a PM if interested.

O-ring in start shaft assy.

Someone on another thread commented about the play in his start shaft assembly. I am currently building a Knight 3D and it is also missing the little rubber O-ring that goes between the start coupler and top bearing. No concern for me as I happen to have a package of the little rascals in my parts drawer. Might want to check any newer Knight kit for this item. Not good for the start shaft to be hammering around in there.

Hey knight,

Look at the parts diagram and the exploded view of the heli. There is no rubber o-ring that goes between the starter coupler and the top bearing. IF there were a rubber o-ring it would casue friction when starting and heat the bearing up if the engine doesn't turn over right away. Pull out the knight 50 3D manual and look at the exploded view of the parts. sorry bud. no rubber o-ring.

Andrew, I own four Knight 50s. One plastic sport, two all metal pro versions and now a 3D. They have all come from the factory with the o-ring of which I have mentioned, with the exception of the newest.

I looked at the manual for the other versions and this part also does not show for the Sport version. The manual for the pro version shows part #99-0501 (the o-ring) between the washer that seats against the step of the older type step shaft and the bearing in the clutch bell.

Compass has since done away with the 5mm to 6mm stepped start shaft design, and now uses the e-ring where the step used to be. I don't know why the manual doesn't show the 0-ring in these later versions, but I can assure you that it has been there in both of the aforementioned models or I would not have said that to be the case.

I can realize that with the perfect, flawless nature of the Knight manuals, that it's highly improbable that a mistake or omission would occur. I'm telling you what I know about the situation, take it or leave it. If you think that the start shaft is supposed to have 1 to 1.5 mm vertical clearance to flop around you are certainly welcome to build it however you wish.

I bought the replacement o-rings from MTA on their Knight parts list. Sorry bud yourself.

Just to be clear the o-ring goes between the start coupler and the top bearing in the current models. Seeing as how the o-ring seats against the start coupling on one side and the inner bearing race on the other side, the friction producing theory doesn't wash. Both of those surfaces move in unison while spinning the engine with the starter. DOH.

The lack of the o-ring to preload the parts stack in the start shaft assembly is what enabled the e-ring on houstonrevo's shaft to contact the one way in the clutch and make that friction sound. Nothing to do with the glue bubba lou.

As long as I'm on the subject of the start shaft assembly I'd also like to mention that it is a very good idea to red loctite the pinion gear to the pinion bearing. If this is not done the pinion will invariably spin inside the inner bearing race, causing undue wear to both surfaces.

Knight Flight

You can red loctite the pinion or I know this sounds strange but you can use a really thick bearing grease. On the RMAX's Yamaha uses a thick grease to mate the bearings to the pinion. I tried this on my Knight sport and it has worked flawlessly and is much easier to disassembly than using green or red loctite on the pinion... The grease causes enough friction to hold the inner race to pinion, allows some movement between the bearing and pinion, and also controls heat so the grease does not break down.

I was suprized how well it worked!!! I wish I would have known this trick in my Hirobo days
