Where to buy...

Toad,

I think I heard that you can get them from RCHeliworks.net I am not sure if they have anymore but I am sure they will be getting somemore in soon. The price is unbeliable at or around $450. I paid $450 for mine.

tnbulldog,

You Knight 3D and build thread look great!!! I am anxious to see what you think about it after flying it.

I just finished mine about 30 minutes ago and will fly it tomorrow... Mine is a bit lighter than yours at 7.7 pounds. I am using nicad AU cells which are pretty light battery, and I also do not have a header tank yet but may add one if the motor leans out during tick tocs and piro 3D moves...

Anyway thanks for the photos and time you spent on thread. I really think Compass has a winner on their hands with this one!!!

Kirk,

You must be a little more dedicated than me, it's 30° and a couple of inches of snow on the ground - no way I'm flying.

Yeah, I really need to change the battery out, it's just what I had laying around at the time. Replacing the 3000mAH C-Cell pack with a Fromeco setup will really drop the weight of the heli.

RCHeliworks just had 3 delivered Friday when I popped in the store but I know he sold two of them on Saturday - he should have one left.

He is having a hard time keeping the 3D in-stock.
Where else can you get a loaded 3D heli, G10 framed, single shaft CCPM setup, metal washout, headblock, swash for $450.

Flew Mine Today

I went out today and got 3 flights on mine. All I can say is WOW...

First flight I hovered it for about 4 minutes to break the new engine in a bit. The machine was as smooth as could be and hovered really nice. I landed made a needle adjustment, and a gov adjustment and went back up. The machine felt solid so I tried some tic tocs, pirofilps, backwards loops, high speed passes, and an auto. I did not have my throttle hold setup right so the motor died (It seems to auto really well). Post flight reveiled a cool running motor (good), and no signs of anything comming loose (even better).

On flights 2 and 3 I flew it as I would my sport. I kept the motor rich and kept checking to see if it was getting warm but I tried to throw everything at it that I could. It proformed flawlessly and was extremly fun to fly. I noticed that it tic tocs really well, Piroflips really well, and it rolls like it is on a string. It also has a very powerfull collective feel (90 like), and very fast collective response. At one point I got it to wall like no other helicopter I have ever seen wall up here before (even the 90's). I had a ton of fun flying this helicopter today!!!

This is a great flying machine!!!

I have a couple of questions about this heli. What is the finish of the G10 frames? Are the edges sharp requiring deburring like the plastic frames? Any parts shortages? (no, I didn't expect they would throw in that Funtech muffler, so I got two of them from CyberHeli)

Is the canopy already cut down as shown in this thread, or did the owner modify it? Looks quite a bit better than the original iteration IMHO.

Are the flight characteristics remarkably different from the other Knights. As far as I can tell from the videos I've seen of this bird, it seems to react very quickly. It also seems to hold energy better during an auto, presumably due to the better efficiency of the tail rotor drive.

Any other impressions of the flight qualities?

I currently have one of these in route from MTA Hobbies, and am pretty anxious to get my hands on it!

Great job on documenting the build of this machine, tnbulldog!!

Thanks for sharing the initial flights, kirk!

tnbulldog,

Do you think a Raptor 50 3D canopy would fit? I just picked one up from a local guy that was custom painted for me. Although I just sold my Raptor 50 in anticipation of my Knight 50 3D, I could not let this canopy go. Too much time was put into it and it is my favorite design that I have seen yet. Here are a few pics of it:

Knight Flight,

Yes the canopy is pre-cut to the shape you see in the pics.
No you do not have the deburr the edge of the G10 frames.
The finish of the G10 frames is very similar to carbon-fiber just without the weave pattern.

Hopefully Kirk will step in and answer your questions regarding flight characteristics. I believe he has both a Sport and a 3D Kit.

I'll check tonight and see if the Fiberglass Raptor canopy will fit.

Knight Flight

Here is my take. Note I only have 3 flights on my 3D so I am still feeling it out:

Knight Sport - For $260 it has to be one of the best values in the hobby right now. It flys really good and holds up to the abuse. Parts are dirt cheap for it and it is easy to build and maintain. I wanted to point these items out becase I do not want to take anything away from the Sport by saying that I think the 3D flys better. The Sport is a great helicopter and is more than worthy...

Knight 3D - It is quick yet stable at the same time. I have my swash atv set kind of low so I do not load the new motor down too much and it is still really quick and does not load the motor very much. It has a locked in feeling that is hard to describe but I assume that it comes from the rigid frame setup. Compared to the sport the 3D will take a little bit more attention to detail when it comes to mounting your servos, running wires so they do not get cut by frames, and motor alignment, but my opinion is that you feel the difference and have to input less correction while flying. Did I say it was quick?
Auto wise I did not do too many auto with the 3D but what I did felt good. I was hitting hold about 15 feet up after doing a circuit and the machine would auto in nice and still have some reserve to pop back up if I wanted to do so. The drive train feels very smooth and loosened up nicely with what little flying I was able to do.

I like both helicopters and feel that they both have their place. The Sport is a great helicopter and competes with the current 50s on the market. The 3D is an all new design and incorporates some new ideas that I think will advance our hobby forwared (the motor mount for instance is a great feature).

So where can I see price list for parts for 3D?

Parts

You can go to the following site and the parts along with their part numbers are listed for all of the models. Also the dealers are listed and they may have a parts price list (That is where I would try)

http://www.motionunlimitedusa.com/specs.php

As far as parts prices go I am not sure where they are listed but I am sure the prices are comming soon and I doubt they will be very much more than Sport prices... The sport and 3D share alot of the same parts like spindels, mainshafts (I belive), booms, headblocks, and so on. The main difference is in the head area (which uses a lot of the pro model parts), and the main frame which I am not sure yet how much parts will cost. G10 is a pretty inexpensive material so I doubt the frame pieces will be too much, and from my past experence compass has VERY reasonable replacemt parts prices...

BTW the 3D was not suppose to come out until the end of Feb. Compass beat their commited delivery date and started sending kits out to customers 2 weeks earlier than originally planned.

tnbulldog,

There are a couple of metal cylinders that looks like flybar weight. Is that what it is or am I leaving parts out:-)?

Also, any suggesstion about antenna mounting (traditional). I am leaning towards base load Deans.

Thanks

Yes the cylinders are flybar weights.

A base loaded Deans antenna would be the easiest option for antenna mounting.

Is the canopy plastic or FRP?

plastic. but they do make a fiber one for the regular 50 that you can trimmed to the exact shape of the 3D canopy. I have done the trimming (pretty easy to do) and will shipped if out for a nice paint job.

The plastic one have a very rough surface if you are thinking about painting it. ( I did the sand, flashing, plastic primer, and top coat thing) and it should stick reasonable well. However, the surface is so rough that it still looks like orange peel unlike my Caliber 5 plastic canopie. But hey it was a cheap homemade paint job use on a beater canpoy so I am Ok with it.

I got a FRP Knight Pro canopy and put the 3D plastic canopy in it, used the 3D one as a guide and drew a line round it then cut the FRP one down, still not the greatest canopy but loads better looking than the stock one.

question for anybody with the knight 3d:
is the stock plastic canopy the durable stuff like raptors or is it the britle stuff like the standard robbe milleniun/futura for example

It looks like standard polyetheylene/propylene type canopie so it is the durable (flexible)stuff
