What exactly is your setup on your R50?
ie. How far out do you have the linkage balls on the cyclic servo horns? Servo ATV's? What servos? Any other info greatly appreciated.

I've got the linkage balls all the way in on the horns. Cyclic is at 7 degrees. not sure of the ATV's. Some pics in my gallery.

Thanks Mark,

The problem i found with the R50 was getting the throws reduced enough and still keep reasonable ATV's >60. I had the ail servo arms in as far as they would possibly go. The elev servo was more difficult and i had to modify the intermediate push pull arm between servo and elev arm. When setting up the throws of the SL720's i still only just managed to get down to 6 degrees ail cyclic and couldn't get below 7 degrees elev cyclic. I increased the ail to match that of the elev for the first flight.

Dan

I haven't tried going below 7 yet. It needs it for me. I need to work on stick management to minimize loss of head speed. Or a bit of expo on the cyclic, perhaps.

Also, since my laptop battery quit last night I didn't finish answering the questions;

I've got JR 811's on the cyclic. Only because that's what came on the heli when I bought it used. For a swashplate follower, I just setscrewed the washout slider to the mast and trimmed off the ends of the washout arms. I wasn't sure that I would like the flybarless setup so I didn't want to dump too much into buying a swash driver.

401's on the cyclic, btw.

I'd have switched them out already if I had a few.

interesting... I have a Titan, and would love to have a flybarless heli... is it expensive to convert it? Does it fly the same? better? worse?

I haven't had a lot of time on it since conversion due to awful weather. So far, it flys at least as well as with the flybar. Cyclic response is much quicker. Roll rates are rediculous. I had green paddles on the flybar and was more than comfortable with rolls and flips. The first flip freaked me out. It was back to upright so quickly I hardly had time to reverse the collective as it went around.

As soon as the weather permits, I'm going to have a more capable pilot help me wring it out.

Got in 2 more flights today. This really makes me wish I was a better pilot. This heli seem so much more responsive now. Couldn't get anyone to brave the cold with me to shoot video. I'm dying to time the roll rate. Didn't seem like more than a second to complete a roll. Definately much faster than with the flybar installed. Not really much time to move collective. I was bogging the head less today. Previously I think I was inputting too much collective while trying in vain to keep up with the roll rate. Today I just moved to about 0 stick then back to positive and the headspeed didn't drop much. Can't wait to see what it'll do in the hands of a skilled pilot.

Also tried HH on the gyros. Doesn't feel like much difference vs rate mode. Maybe a touch more stable but it was so windy it is hard to say.

Got 2 more flights in today. Warmer and less windy, finally. Now I can tell the difference between the HH and rate modes. HH definately tracks better and cuts the ballooning down to nill. Holds hover pretty well, too. Almost like I had the stabilization active. Can't do that with the gyro's in HH, I'm told.

Finally figured out the bit of oscillation that has been remaining. It had only occured at the end of the flight. I thought it might be my inputs from being so cold. Happened today so that was out. Turns out it's only happening when settling with power. Explains the end of flight timing

Weather permitting, I'll get some video this weekend.

I am sorry to ask, but does this all mean you just took a raptor, removed the flybar, made some adjustments to the "rotor phasing" menu and then it works as well as you described ?

You need gyros on the cyclic as well. The rotor phasing adjustment is a handy addition in the AP2000i. A lot easier than trying to get the swash driver set just right.
