e-Ikarus Piccolo-Eco 8/16 > ECO 8 and Twist 3700 - a match made in hell ??

Has anyone tried running a Twist 3700 in an Eco 8 with a small pinion to keep the headspeed down ??

Alternatively does anyone know of a suitable heli for the 3700, other than:-

Eolo (just destroyed itself again - tail drive vibes - my nerves can't take any more

or

Voyager E (already got one fitted with a Hacker - )

Many thanks

Twist 37

I tried the Twist 37 on 3s lipo. It was running way too hot and flight times were down. Head speed well over 2000 rpm. This motor rpm/ is too high for the eco gearing even on 3s. You need to select a motor with something in the order of 1800rpm/v for 3s. Simple calc for head speed is :-

battery voltage x rpm/v of motor x pinion size divided by main gear teeth (180). Hacker B50-18s is good on 3s. The higher the voltage you go then the lower the rpm/v of the motor you will have to select to keep the headspeed at below 2000.

I am running a Orbit 20-10 on 5s with a 18t pinion. Headspeed is approx 17.5v x 1030rpm/v x pinion 18t divided by 180 = 1800rpm.

I would think that you could make this combo work
by running a good govenor mode speed control at about
80 - 90%, this should keep you in 1600 -1900 rpm land.

In case of high heat, tie wrap a 52mm, 12 volt cooling
to the front of the frames and cut a few small holes
in the canapy's nose underneath for an air inlet.
this should save you about 40 degress F. at minimum.
amazing...! but a little forced air movement under there
goes a long ..long way. ( uumm.. yup I do this on both
my ECO-8 and ECO-16).

You would struggle to get this combo to work. Even with a 8 cell set up and 12t pinion the headspeed would be over 2300. You would have to dial the ESC down a lot to get the headspeed right which is not good for the ESC and is not efficient.

I have tried the 3700 before. I would suggest choosing an alternative.

Wouldn't you want to try a stock 10T pinion?
Therefore 18:1 ..... No....?

I forget the Twist will fit a 10t. That should get the headspeed down a little. worth a try if you have a Twi.ast but I still wouldnt buy one out of choice.

windyone,

Cool, I suppose thats why we all look at these forums.
Actually its funny as I have a Hacker C40-8L from a Voyager-E
thats very similar to the Twist and, have always thought it was
worth trying. Also my LHS HAS a twist which he got for a
Voyager Customer (again) and never sold, so he's been offering
it to me at a killer price. So I keep thinking to pick it up
and try it myself. Only problem is I already have two ECO machines
flying well and, with so many new machines comming out, its
hard to spend the time purely for academic reasons. ie: have
you seen the new Mikado's ? : )

Anyway --Perhaps one of these days...............

Yes I have seen the new Mikados. They look fantastic. Pity they are just being released as I may have changed my mind on my next electric - I have just bought a Mini joker. The quality of this kit is absolutely superb and it looks great. Hope it flies as well.

sorry to mention other helis in the ECO forum - my ECO 8 is still a fantastic heli and I love flying it. Just think that I am starting to ask too much from it at times !.
