I am helping a friend, new to helis, on a Pico. I am familiar with the eco8 only. The tail rotor does not begin to spin until I command it on the Tx. I have tried to adjust the Tx which helps, but not at startup. I also notice very little head speed. Any Pico 101 tips for me?

Any other information you can give us on the setup would be a good place to start...

Stock setup? - picoboard, geared tail/separates, direct drive tail
Motor setup? - brushed/brushless

If you're using the picoboard, play with the mixing pot and see if that makes any difference. Once you get that close to where you like it then adjust any drift or wag of the tail with the gain/sensitivity pot. A good starting place on both of those adjustments is between 75 - 80%.

If your friend is working with separates...then that's a whole other ball of yarn. You'll have to play with revo mixing and a bunch of other mixing programs on you computer radio.

As far as the headspeed issue goes, you'll find that with fp helis you'll have much less headspeed than, say, your eco8. If you don't have enough to even lift off the ground, then you might want to check if the battery is up to par. Try cycling it a few times on a charger that has a cycling function and see if that helps. Or it may be just as simple as you need a new battery.

Try the pots first and get the tail working then deal with the headspeed.

Yes, it is all stock. His radio is the simple one that came with the package so no curves to worry about. He has been charging on a cheap wall charger. I will cycle the battery through my charger a few times and see if that helps. Thanks, i'll let you know how it comes out.

A little more advise

A good visual indicator that you're getting close to the proper settings on the mixer is that you'll see the tail start spinning close to the same time as the main rotor.

I was thinking about your headspeed problem too...it may be possible that the main motor could be going bad. Aside from opening the motor and potentially ruining it, I know of no way to check for a bad motor...try searching the rest of the forum for ways to check that.

Good luck

Piccolo Upgrade

If you are running the stock main motor and tail motor, they are junk. I just upgraded my main to a Baron 330 (Orion) and the tail is a 7.2v high output direct drive. I got the whole set-up from helihobby. I am also using a 2-cell lipo. I noticed my main motor was going out when it would start to warm up and couldn't produce enough torque...which was about 2 minutes on a fresh battery charge.
As soon as I upgraded the main, the tail went out about two flights later. Tail rotor control would cut in and out. If you plan on keeping the piccolo for a while, you may want to upgrade to these parts. I have been very happy ever since and flying is so much easier. (Sim also helps)
