I have a grip myself. Me and a buddy of mine also registered with IRCHA when we got there just to have a chance to win the Aroura. When we asked the lady for a pen to sign the back of the ticket she said we didn't need to sign it because they were going to call out the ticket number and you needed to be present to win. So the guy pulled the first ticket, sorry it was the second ticket the first one was rejected, he looked at the back for a name and no name was on the back -- so he didn't even call the number on that ticket and thru it off to the side and preceded to pull another ticket - which had a name on the back. THAT IS WRONG-RIP OFF! DOESN'T SEEM FAIR!
Other than that IRCHA was a good experience!

CJames, I was sitting next to the bleachers just west of the Avant, not the ones right next to it. They called someone up, I cannot remember his name, and I believe he was the person that donated the Avant. They said something to the effect that there is some stipulation on winning the Heli. He said they wanted it to go to a regular pilot, not a sponsored pilot or a field rep.
I heard it, my friends heard it and we were glad they were doing it that way so that someone would get a chance to win something so nice, that was not already sponsored. We even had a brief conversation about it prior to the drawing. I completely understood what they were saying about who they wanted to win. Another good friend of mine was near the stage area and he heard the same thing I did and had comments on the reaction of some people.

Now, prior to Saturday there may not have been any statements made about the stipulation on who would be eligible, I cannot say either way. I did not know what was even going to be raffled off until I arrived on Friday. If they were saying they would be raffling the Avant ahead of time and did not mention anything about who would be eligible, then that could be an issue, they should not change the rules at the last minute. And if they did not initially say field reps and sponsored pilots aren't eligible, then that was changing the rules because everyone would have thought they would have a chance.

I did witness someone win a Trex kit, and he was affiliated with a Team, so they gave it to someone else.

I can see this becoming an issue for next years IRCHA. If they advertise a raffle ahead of time, and the items being given away, then they should also state the rules and stick to what they say. Thats it, no other way. Personally, I hope some of my $9.00 meal ticket went to support IRCHA, because the meal was not steak, like I was told it would be.

Thats exacly what my gripe is about!! They encouraged everyone to renew their subs but told NOONE about the rules untill the drawing was about to be done.

Even the girls who were writing everyone up NEVER said anything about it, I personally had Shannon write me up because my computer was having issues, when I paid he never mentioned anything about any restrictions, I looked back at their site after Ircha and saw NOTHING about any rules, the only two rules mentioned were that the "winner had to be present", and "the winner had to be a Ircha member". Nowhere was it written that reps were not eligiable.

I understand totally why Agusto wanted the rules that way, I have no problem with that aspect, my beef is that Ircha management "Convenently" forgot to post the rules.
Personally, I think they owe the guy an appoligy for the way they talked to and treated him that night and they should step up and give him what he won.
Then they should refund any reps who want their membership dues back that they paid expecting or hoping for a chance to win the big one.

I believe what Avant tried to do was a good thing. But, the rule should have been stated along with being IRCHA member. We are not IRCHA member so we did not expect to win it but would have been disapointed if we were IRCHA members and won that prize as we heard nothing about not being affiliated rule.

As a Thunder Power sponsored pilot, we did not participate in the TP battery give away because it made no sense for us to participate. If we had won FP packs, we could not use it anyway so we would have either given it away or would have to sell it.

I believe the heli related prizes offset and ease the very expensive cost of being in this hobby for few and it is a good thing. It makes more sense if the person can use the prize rather than sell it.

If a Thunder Tiger sponsored pilot (or any other brand) won that Avant, he would either have to sell it or give it away (how many would?) and the spirit of original intent would have been lost.

It is all good and well but sad that it was not stated in writing.

On a separate note, Justin had been preparing for the night flying competition and was very excited about it. We read the rules and it stated 12 months of flying and thought they want to keep it safe for everybody. We had signed up for it earlier and waited for the night to drop off his music and was told by Dave Miller that he can't let Justin fly for the competition. I do understand that his motives were safely related. However, the rule should have stated other than just 12months of flying and not just come up with something on the fly. We had "Zero" chance of of even getting out of the preliminary but would have been very happy to just participate.

For the past 25months he has been flying RC, he has yet to cross either the runway centerline or the heli launch pad. My efforts during that period was making sure he stayed within the safety boundary and I am mighty proud (more than his flying) that he kept it safe all this time. I just wish that IRCHA would have made the rules clearer.

He kept saying he wants to fly the night and asking me why he could not fly. I had to come up with a reason and told him that one of his flights crossed the small cone(left and right boundary) and that is why he was not allowed to fly. I could not tell him the reason was becase he was not xx feet tall or xx year old as those were not the rules.

Benny, keep in mind that you are treading new ground with your boy.
Even though we don't have demo slots, he's quite welcome to night fly at our Rochester event in two weeks.

Your son was an excelent flyer. I was very impressed watching him, That was too bad they had to make up a reason to not let him fly.

CJames:

Actually, Dave said it would be too dangerous for him to fly at night and said he might let Justin fly if it was a Trex450. He asked what his night ship was and I told him Trex600 and Dave said "No".

The passing the small boundary cone was the excuse I had to come up with to calm him down. Justin knew those were the boundary cones and when I told him the reason why they are not allowing him to do night fly, Justin conceded.

I could not use "You flew too close to pits" because everyone else flew closer than Justin.

In a way, it was a good thing as his Sunday's flying was sharper and smoother and further away from the flight line than before.

One of the things I was hoping that Justing witnessed was the two accidents that happend during the event. I'm not looking for the accidents to happen but if it does, having Justin witness one would make him think about safety even more. Unfortunately he was too busy running around with kids.

Justin is too cool. He will obviously face some battles due to his age but as his skills progress he'll be just fine.

I must comment on little Justin's flying.

Justin put on a very good show with the E-Magnum, and even when the tail let loose due to a setscrew removing itself ( ), he fought that heli all the way down, ensuring that it did NOT go into the crowd first, then actually getting the thing onto it's feet just prior to impact.

In my way of seeing it, he did an excellent job, did what I would expect of any pilot out there, young or old, Safety First, THEN maybe, if possible, save the heli. I'm convinced that he has the skills AND the understanding of what is going on, that it's not just a "Video Game".

(I was glad he was flying it and not me...!! That would have been the end of a new set of TST V-Blades.)

I have to say that I am truly impressed with Justin's flying! I'm not all that surprised that he can fly rings around me but I am surprised that at his age he has the decision making ability and understanding of the dangers involved. I have two grandsons, 8 and 11, that fly on the sim and can fly fairly decent but they have no concern for crashing or safety even though I have tried to get it through to them. They think the bigger the crash the better!! Until they get it on the sim, I am not about to let them try for real.

Stupid people have no idea how stupid they are!!!

To reiterate what Chris said, I am very impressed with Justin's reasoning and rationalizing. I was already impressed with his flying, no matter his age, but I saw (what I thought was a 600 electric) having some issue that was audible and he quickly oriented it so that he could auto it in. That kind of stuff usually only comes from experience and it isn't something that you think about, you just do it. Kudos to both father and son. I apologize for not meeting both of you face to face at IRCHA, but we definitely enjoyed the flying!

Hello Benny,

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed meeting you and your wife and of course Justin. I was very impressed with Justin’s flying and you’re coaching/discipline of him too. I stood next to you on the flight line with Justin on Saturday morning and I applaud you for your pressing SAFETY first with Justin. I was amazed at how well he flew, MUCH BETTER THAN ME, and how cautious and in control he flies as you coach him. I enjoyed dinner with you folks, watching him eat his spaghetti, and seeing him act his age in person. Watching him run around the field with his foam glider too, he’s 5 for gosh sakes! <G> His laughter and young spirit made me laugh at times as I watched him enjoy himself with all the BIG KIDS – US - at IRCHA.

Far as the night fly decision and Justin, well we have to put faith in the people who organized the event for the decision made. I feel they did a great job running IRCHA this year. Is there room to improve, sure. But all things considered I felt very good about the event. Remember that Justin has MANY MANY years to grow up...don’t rush him. I’m sure he’ll be one of the world’s best pilots in time as he continues to fly and learn. Once we met Justin chatted with me throughout the week/end any time he saw me. And he high-5’ed me often. He’s a good kid. I wish you all well! Again, my pleasure to finally meet.

For the grand prize...I heard many many times throughout the week/end on the PA system, I arrived on Wednesday @ noon, what the deal was for the heli. It was to be won by "John Q. Public" and not a pilot associated with a company/sponsor. Get over it already... I applaud Augusto for making that possible too.

I also want to give thanks to the IRCHA/AMA staff for putting faith into the Spektrum system to allow the technology to work as it was designed. This was very refreshing to see. Yes a chance taken on their part as flight station mayhem could have occurred...but it worked out very very well. It’s nice when a product works as it should.

Thanks to everyone who put the time in, Dave, Charles, Brett and the rest of the group for making this event such a success. YOU GUYS DESERVE A BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE!

Joe Nall??? What's that? Ohhhh yeah, you guys used to have the record. Try catching us now!!!

Till next year!

Just wanted to chime in, and let the IRCHA staff know they done a
great job, IMHO!! Do not want to leave anyone out, but I did see
Dave M, Shannon and Brett almost always busy with something all
throughout the event; what a huge undertaking! Also very grateful for
the small details such as the misting tent and the very numerous
water stations. Almost made dealing with the heat a non-issue.
I also want to say thanks for 'spectrum' ,it really did work out
great. I am still on 72, (but looking VERY hard at SPECTRUM), and never had any major problem w. getting the pin. The only reason for
not flying this year is because you didn't want to
My wife and I headed back to our tent just as the century guy was going up on stage,so we missed that, so won't comment, but will say
if anything negative, there needs to be more traffic control w. the private carts; man, you really had to watch out sometimes.
What a great event and thanks again!!

Great Event

I can't speak for anyone but me, this was my first IRCHA event, what a great time. I have been to many large events, NASCAR, EAA Etc. this was a great event. The only two things I would like to see different next year is more porta potty's and more trash cans. Dave, thanks for all your hard work as well as all the board members, great job. Mark

Whatever!

It was nice meeting you too at IRCHA and at the TP dinner.

I guess I must have blocked out the Avant related anouncements as it did not pertain to us.

I was really surprised (more like shocked) at the flight path of Justin's drag racing heli. Seeing how he did during the drag, we will be preparing for the drag racing at IRCHA 2008.

See you soon.
