e-Electric General Discussion > What micro heli to get for winter / practice flying

Hi all!

I want to get an indoor elec mini heli to practice / play with (normally fly a rap 30 when the weather allows, which I can hover but have not tried nose in yet...), but the question is which one.

I figure the 3 choices are (current UK package price):
Hoverfly ( £170)
Piccolo (£265)
Hornet (£299)
Any other suggestions?

The hoverfly scores on being the cheapest, and unlimited flight times due to the cable, but I am concerned as to how it flies compared to my raptor, i.e. is it going to a realisitic machine to practice / learn with (I have tried the sims but prefer the real thing...)?

The Piccolo and Hornet appeal more as they actually appear like proper helis (and I can put bodies on them! :-) ), so I presume they are more realistic flyers, however what sort of flight times are you guys getting with these? Also is the FP to VP upgrade worth it?

I also have a limited space indoors of around 15' x 13', its a kitchen / dinning area so fairly robust, but am concerened about what damage the larger Piccolo or hornet may do when I crash it, or whether they will be to big to fly properley in this limited space?

I would be grateful for all your thoughts on this, as I want to make sure I get a suitable one (but am in new toy mode and want to rush out and buy one! :-) )

Many thanks!

Tony - For what you want, I'd go with HoverFly. I have a few of all the little helis on your list and for low maintenance and survivability you won't beat the Snelflight package. I learned to nose-in hover on mine and on rotten weather days it's in the family room getting a work out. As far as flight characteristics are concerned, it is a FP bird so it's a little more of a challenge than a CP that you fly on your IC heli. It does keep the eye hand coordination honed and that is the major benefit of this little machine.
Hope this helps.

How about .....

Realflight G2 ( £160)

If you havn't got it already and have a computer that can run
it I'd get it before any of those indoor helis.

Mel makes a good point for others, but I didn't think it was an item you didn't have when you mentioned the Raptor.

I vote for the Century Hummingbird. It's a lot cheaper than the hornet or piccolo and is a REAL heli unlike hoverfly. It's Fixed pitch, though. If you want an upgrade path to collective pitch, then it's either the piccolo or the hornet. Just be aware that the electronics for these micro helis can be expensive. Its worth the price, in my opinion, though.
