Well to my surprise (expecting heli tomorrow) the new Hurrican 50 was awaiting me tonight! Packaging looks great and I don't know which is nicer, the heli or the embroidered shirt that came with the kit! (yeah I know the heli's nicer) I've included some pics of the kit. First off, a few heli manufactures need to take a page from the hurrican instructions, they are VERY well written with pics and diagrams. Everything is nicely bagged and numbered. The C/F frames are thick and the metal head/parts look to be very nice. The rest of the goodies will come tomorrow (engine, servo's, gyro etc). I will do my best to post progress of the build. I did take the C/F blades out and put them on my scale to check how far off they are from the get go...not too bad (.06g)difference. Impressed so far...

Ok, for an update. I put the lower and upper frames together tonight. Parts are all fitting rather well, no issues except I had to drill a hole in C/F side frame (missing a small hole for landing gear brace) I also had to round out a few holes in the C/F side frame for a few braces to "seat". Nothing out of the ordinary. So far, Im very impressed with the quality! It's built like an ox! When you put both the upper and lower frames together, with all the braces it utilizes, it's quite nice that each screw goes in with out any binding...the frames were made well. One thing I did notice that should have been addresed at the beginning is that heli can accept both CCPM and MPM mixing. The instructions do not discern between the two and a newbie will (could) spend a lot of time putting parts together before realizing the parts are not needed for CCPM. Nice touch to have if one does not have a newer technology radio but the instruction should state this clearly right from the get go. One thing very nice (for me at least) is this model clearly states in the instructions it is intended and built for an O.S. 50 Hyper. Everything from the engine mount, cooling fan and hardware. It actualy states this a couple times in the instructions...cool. Also, looking at the clutch setup, I except very minimal runout on the engine/clutch assembly. The way it's designed, it minimizes it from the get go. Also, the fan is very light weight and is pre drilled for a magnet (such as for a GV 1). That's it for now, here are some pics.

last update for the weekend! I tackled the fan/clutch assembly today and installed the magnets for the GV1. I first drilled a 2nd hole opposite of the existing hole for the GV1 magnet. The factory hole was not symetrical (centered) between fan blades so I really had to make sure the second hole was offset as such. (see pic). As the plastic fan is very light, it is also very thin so care was taken not to drill through all the way. (although I did drill two small pin holes all the way through to act as a relief for the epoxy) I then balanced the fan on a high point and shaved just a smidgen (sp?) of plastic off to balance. The most impressive piece is the self guiding tappered brass collars that really do an effective job of aligning the fan/clutch assembly to the crank!! First shot and I was at .001 on the clutch hub!! The fan was off a bit more (.002)due to manufacturing im sure. (measured both on runout and lateral axis..see pic) Good enough for me and the girls I date!!! I've got to say, for someone who is getting into the hobby, having a "self aligning" clutch assembly with out the tools or knowledge for runout would be in GREAT shape compared to other models. When I installed the clutch shoes, the two holes where it bolts down the the clutch hub were off. Well, just one hole was by just a fraction so I had to drill in an effort to elongate the hole just a very, very little bit. That was all it took. I went ahead and measured runout on the clutch shoes and it was on the money! (with a lot of variables due to the "spring action" of the shoe itself.) I was really just wanting to ensure my modification was true...no problem!! Kudos to the mfg for a sound clutch assembly.

Not a lot to report, installed the engine and GV1 sensor (why does it seem I always have to drill new holes in the mounting bracket??) Anyway, engine is dialed in and installed along with main gear and main shaft... Should be able to start working the tail soon... Canopy is off to my painter!

Well, I got the tank, header tank (thanks Clyde!) and swash/washout base done. Not a lot but it's making progress. No issues, great quality swash and head assembly. One thing I do want to mention, the ball joints fit very well onto the links. No reaming the links and very smooth link movement without any binding or hesitation from the nylon links.

Ok, update... Got the head assembly together along with the boom, tail assembly and centered out all my servos. All in all, the kit has been great! I did go with a Century rear tail grip (2 axial bearings with 3rd thrust bearing). I had an extra from my Hawk Pro and what do you know??? It fits perfectly! SWEET! Had a difficult time seating the rear tail block to the boom, had to sand it down with great care then "press" it into the cnc machined block. The other problem I had was the flybar carrier bearing was off center by just a very little, this created a off balance flybar. I compensated with a slight adjustment of the flybar positioning (.25mm one side vs the other). Static balanced, all was good. I went with the J/K Hatori muffler, that took a bit of time to get the brackets correct...looks fantastic! Servo installation was no problem, everything went very well and everything lines up nicely. Hope to have the linkages together over the next week and fire the engine over next weekend if Im lucky... I did go with different flybar paddles, C/F boom supports (cause I had them). I will weigh the heli with servos, JR rx and Duralight 4000Mah in the coming days...

..another update. I completed the servo installation along with with linkages. Everything went very smooth, still very impressed with the quality of the ball joints and their smooth operation. Let's see here, Rusty overnighted me a different hub assembly to install as mine had two holes for the seesaw drilled just a bit off center. I really want to thank RJX as they sent the part to me overnight SATURDAY delivery...thanks guys!! I have probably spent at least 12 hours on the servo/head linkage/swash installation ensuring all aspects were dead on at 0 degrees pitch. (between beers..not a good idea ) Swash movement from full negative to full positive equated to near perfect level swash throughout the pitch range. Everything else from there was a piece of cake with all arms level and perpendicular to the hub. I installed the the sensor for the 611 gyro and will tackel the rear linkage tomorrow. Im going with the stock rudder control rod for now until my carbon fiber kit comes in. Also, Im going to idle out a tank of fuel in effort to bring the engine to life tomorrow

Well I've got the electronics installed. GV1, 611, Duralight power/regulator and rx. Everything looks great... ! Center of gravity is spot on with just a bit nose heavy. Painter is still not done with the canopy so that will have to wait. Im going to fire the engine today and idle out a tank. Still have to install rear tail pushrod. My carbon fiber piece is still not in ;( No issues to share as everything has been straight forward with servo/radio installation. I think there's enough processing power on this heli to give my home computer a run for it's money... ha.

Well, I don't have pics but I took the heli out to the field yesterday! (without canopy) Figured I'd hover just a bit and ensure all was looking good. First I have to say the Hyper 50 is an awesome engine to tune...very easy and work with in the rpm ranges as stated. Im running the JK Hyper 50 muffler (Hatori). I am still trying to figure out the 611 gyro so I kept it close to the ground. After 3 tanks hovering there are no signs of wear and the best part of all...there was absolutely no "wash machine" (vibration) showing in the fuel tank during hover. That is an absolute testiment to the way the clutch bolts to the engine output shaft with double tappered collars. So, for a newbie, this means it's hard to screw up runout when tightening the clutch to the engine. In my book, that's a big deal and only makes the experience better. I did have one blade tracking a bit higher than the other but did not mess with it as all I was trying to do was run fuel through the engine. So, on my fourth flight I took it into forward flight doing figure 8's... still struggling with the gyro, expo settings and all that other stuff. Used optitach and was running 1780 rpm in normal. The heli felt VERY quick on cyclic (awesome)..this may be due to the 3D paddles Im using vs stock. Applied 20% exponential. I was thrilled with how smooth it was even with one blade slightly off track. I have since fixed that problem on my bench and look forward to giving it a go next week. I still doubt I will have the canopy from the painter so flight will be limited to easier manuvers and no loops, rolls or inverted flight. I did find tonight that the cg of the blades were off 1/2 inch, not a big deal but I did the whole blade balance/cg on my Koll balancer. It took 1g tracking tape on the heavy blades cg and then the same 1g on the root of the light blade. That allowed me to balance with the original .06g strip of tape as stated in my first thread of this post.

Flew the bird again this weekend. Still breaking in the engine but all is great! I love the feel of the heli in forward flight it tracks very smooth with no pitching (still no canopy). I did some easy rolls and loops with very predictable characteristics. My belt is still a little tight and will adjust if needed after a couple gallons of fuel. I do love the fact that pulling the engine is easy...5-10 minute process and getting to most parts is a piece of cake. Getting to the glow plug can be challenging because of the throttle servo stick out in front of the plug. I can still get my glow plug flex driver on the plug and unscrew, but then use a piece of 5" fuel tubing to fit over the end of the plug and unscrew the rest of the way. Im going to look for a smaller throttle servo (Im running an overkill 9254) one with less depth, and that problem will be solved . Any recommendations? Still no Radix blades yet...they're on back order...and my canopy is still not done! Hope to have pics just as soon as it all arrives!

I had my hopes set high! He needed to apply another coat of clear then polish. Yes, it's done but will pick up tomorrow. I will post the pics tomorrow night I hope! The original black "tint" windscreen is going to be much smaller and it will feature a split window. It should complement all the "bling" of the full metal head and tail!!

Canopy Done

Well it's done. whew! Canopy looks fantastic..pics don't do it justice! After reviewing the pics, I should have whiped my finger prints off of it but oh well! Notice the factory "windscreen" lines in the canopy have all been filled, it's now a split windscreen painted. Aluminum to black fade to match the head and carbon fiber main frames. It looks fantastic! Next pics will be in the air...
