That's great, my buddy made that, and even put it in the post that it was a photoshop.

> Can someone explain to me the difference between fail safe
> and "true fail safe".

Sure, I'll give it a shot. "Fail safe" in general simply means that the receiver recognizes when it has stopped receiving valid data from the transmitter and takes certain actions. Formerly this was a term reserved for PCM receivers. But for several years PPM receivers have been available which also offer fail safe features.

Typically when signal is lost, there is a time period in which the receiver goes into hold on all channels. That simply means it repeats the last known good pulse width on all the receiver outputs.

If this time period elapses and signal reception has not been recovered, the receiver moves into the next stage of fail safe. That is either continuing the previous good pulse widths (this is usually referred to as "Hold" ) or starting to output predefined pulse widths (usually referred to as "Fail Safe" ).

On PCM radios, fail safe settings are done at the transmitter. You have the per channel option of "Hold" or "Fail Safe." If you select "Fail Safe" you also determine the desired fail safe pulse width. This information is then transferred to the receiver periodically during normal use.

For the FM receivers with fail safe features, the settings are set on the receiver itself.

My guess as to what folks mean by "true fail safe" are simply the options we currently have with PCM setups.

Does that help any?

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I don't see the downside of the spectrum fail safe solution as long as throttle can be put at a specified position (Failsafe) and the rest on Hold.

UK Ofcom 2.4 GHz Power Limits

I downloaded the Ofcom 2030, Dec 2006 document from the MacGregor site. I don't see any approval for 2.4 GHz model use! There is a Non Specific Short Range Device specification of 10mW EIRP.

Is this the output of Spektrum UK models ? How far could this possibly go ? Is Spektrum pretending that these are Industrial Telecommand systems ?

I am starting to think that the USA is the only country that allows enough power on 2.4 GHz to make RC feasible - 1 watt. That would explain why the Japanese are late in the game.

Legislation was passed in the UK on December 8th last year to leagalise the use of 2.4ghz air and ground radio systems with an output up to 100mw which means we use the exact same DX7 radio as in the USA.

Looking at the Ofcom information sheet [url=http://www.ofcom.org.uk/radiocomms/ifi/licensing/classes/rlans/technical/ofw311/] yes, 100mW EIRP.

The only True Fail Safe is to leave you Models on the Shelf.
And even then you risk the shelf failing.
