T-3. Wheels and Axles: The car shall roll on the wheels from the kit. The wheels shall turn about the axle
nails from the kit. The axle nails shall be firmly affixed to the wood of the car body. The axle
dimensions (wheelbase) may be changed and entrants do not have to use the precut axle slots. There
must be at least four wheels on the car, however, it is not required that all four wheels make contact with
the track surface. The wheels must be attached directly to axle and spin freely. The wheels and axles
may be placed anywhere along the car body as long the car will straddle the lane guide, and the size and
staging requirements are met (see T-4 and T-10). The outside surface of the axle head (the non-contact
surface) may not be changed, such as, by polishing. This means you may not polish, paint, mark, or
cover the outside (the top) of the axle heads, but you may polish or modify the axles (it is recommended
that you do). It must be obvious to the judges and officials that the wheels and the nails from the kit are
being used. (see Pictures & Notes)

This is what it states in our rules. As long as you don't mess with the head of the nail, your fine. Altering is recommended. LOL

I was looking at your link and those axles seem like they would let the wheel wobble a bit. I'm trying to come up with a design that would keep the wheels from wobbling. I found that site last year but couldn't remember the name of it. Thanks for the link.

follow your rules to the 't'

our rules state clearly that all four wheels must contact the track.

Read what your troop gives you carefully

If i ever get my son into this (he's 6 months) I'm gonna model the car up in Solidworks and analyze it's aerodynamics with FloWorks haha.

This may sound stupid but PWD's are part of boyscouts or cubscouts?

I made a C02 car in middle school. I actually helped the winner properly sand his car. Man I regreted helping him out but he was my best friend. Our two cars smoked everyones until it was mine vs his. that was a lot of fun too.

PWD's are part of Cub Scouts.

Our pack strickly adheres to the rules. Last year we had someone work on their car the day of the race, it did not even get down the track when they tried to test run it. So they went home and came back with another one that beat everyone. It was disqualified because our rules clearly state that the car has to have been built after September of the previous year. Our pack supplies each scout with a car kit that included the block of wook, wheels and axle's.

The car must fit the template for wheel spacing, clearance under the car, and all 4 wheels must be riding on their surface, no riding on the edge.

After all the trophies were given out last year our Pinewood derby chairman overheard one of the winner's parents commenting about an illegal modification he did. Nothing was done as it was too late, but we will not miss that one this year.

Our race is Feb 10th.

Had our PWD this weekend. My son took 1st in the den level races and 3rd in the Pack. I won the Akela race afterwards and have 5 cases of beer coming to me from the losers. LOL I will post pics of the winning cars when I get a chance.
