Chad, I understand that you never wanted to "cheat" in the first place. It would do alot to a kids mind if you got caught.

Looks like you did a great job getting the job done.

Thanks... it was a long and early morning. Racing started at 7:00 and we didn't get finished till 12:30. Approx 70 boys, cars and parents for each. A ton of people. I was wiped out when we got home. Took about a 3 hr nap. I'm refreshed and now need to get the helo ready for flying tomorrow. Man what a great weekend!!!

I am a Cubmaster, our rules state clearly, you must use the block of wood, wheels and nails that come in the box. This is one reason we provide the cars to all of our scouts. We have a jig that checks the wheel spacing, and make sure all 4 wheels touch the floor of the jig. Once the car passes inspection, it is impounded and the scouts will not touch their cars again until after all races are over.

It is extemely easy to make a winning car and still able to follow these rules, after all, my sons have won thier share of trophy's.

I have seen cars that are totaly not aerodynamic and still win, sometimes it just comes down to luck.

I always use plenty of graphite, and always hide the weights so there is no drag.

Our pack also gives out prizes for the cars most likely built by a scout. We also offer a chance for the parents to build a car, and anything goes for them.

It is about learning to build and the scouts building it that counts.

My sons car came in 2nd place last night at our Cub Scouts Troops Pinewood Derby. It was his 1st time and it was a lot of fun, he is 6 so you can imagine how much of the building he did.

Nice looking car. You guys were aloud to change the wheel base? That's cool. Our Pack rules state that we had to use the slots already in the block. Congrats again.

my TigerCub's first weigh-in and impound.

Well guys, its my son's first pinewood derby. Tonight is the weigh-in and impound and the races are Friday night. After all the wheel/axel stuff was done we were bored, so we thought we'd make her look cool too!

Regards,
Anthony

That's a nice car, obviously not going to win the award for "car most likely built by a scout". That is one of the awards our pack gives to scouts and is voted on by the scouts.

Good luck.

Chad -- you're in Florida, right? I don't mean to rain on your parade, but where in blazes are you gonna find a HILL to roll 'em down?

Either way, best of luck.

What i did with my son was to cut the the back the stock block just past one of the axels to make the overall length of the block short but the wheelbase the same. Then the block that was cut off was glued to the other end of the block to return it to the original block size but moving the wheelbase back on the rear of the block. Make sense? Then lots of camber to run on the inside edge of the wheel (less rolling surface for friction) and then we cut a notch out of the front and made a wing 1/2 inch up straight across the front. This way the car sat on the pin against the wing and the slightest movement of the pin started the car moving and then the pin slid thru the notch for a head start. (hard to explain) BUT this is no longer allowed i think. Trust me this was the way to make a FAST car and we set the track record that still stands today and that was 7 years ago! also did the polish polish polish on the axles. Also turned down the inside of the wheels for a thinner thicknes of wheel (less rotating mass to turn over). not sure if this is allowed nowadays or not. Just my .02cents on what we did.

It's hard but we have one hill that we use.

It's that time a year again to start getting the cars built. Our race is in January so I will be starting ours here pretty soon. Our pack is doing something new this year. We are going to have a "Fathers" race. First the boys are going to race and then the dads can build a car and race against each other. So needless to say, I have to do two cars worth of axles. But that's alright, I know the tricks. My son and I plan on winning both races. Keep the tips coming for the new guys to the sport. It helped us get Pack Champion last year. Thanks again guys.

Chad,
We have a similar "class" of race called the "Outlaw" I have a car with a C02 cartridge and IR valve tucked in the back. Just for laughs, I'll hit the remote when the car reaches the flat and then it should accelerate like a rocket. I can't wait to see the faces on the other Dad's when she takes off! I'll try to video tape it and post that race.

Anthony

Hey guys,

Been doing alot of thinking and I came up with an idea that might revolutionize the PWD. I need your opinions though on if you think it will work and if you think it is legal or not. BSA rules clearly state no rolling axles, washers, wet lubricant, etc. Only the BSA official wheels and axles. We all know that the axles are key. Take a look at the drawing I did and let me know what you think. The axles will be polished and will have recesses carved into them with rounded edges so they won't dig or scrape the inside of the wheel. The drawing sucks I know, but if you can imagine two or three recesses no more than 1/64" deep, with rounded out edges, and spaced where the wheel woudln't wobble, the surface friction would be greatly reduced. I feel it is a legal because there is no rolling bearing and only graphite will be used as will official BSA axles and wheels. What do you think?
