Radio - JR & Spektrum DSM > Almost bought a DX7 but...

I've always been a Futaba person, but I really liked the DX7 Spektrum. Went to my LHS to buy one, but after looking at it I decided not to. I could not believe that JR puts the trainer switch in the upper-middle of the faceplate! Seems brain damaged to me, but I suppose most people won't care that they either have to take the hands off the left stick or reach across other switches and risk bumping them. However, when I saw that, it was no sale. I'll wait for something better than my 8U.

It's actually pretty comfy for a pincher like myself - I pinch the stick with thumb and forefinger and position my middle finger up around the face switches to press the rocker button downward - Press/Release - Feels much like any other trainer toggle switch and quite natural to me - I dig it like it is and don't think I'd want it any other way - So you Futaba dumb-thumbers just stick with your own kind before tryin ta mess with my comfy JR layouts.

The next generation (DX-8 or higher) may have enough switches to at least have a "momentary on" trainer switch on the upper corner. We can only hope so.

I'm a diehard Futaba flyer myself. I will wait and see the outcome of the "plug in style" Extreme Power 2.4 ghz systems. Supposedly there's a release date at the AMA convention this week.

Well I started with Futaba and have nothing bad to say, but they are taking too long, cant justify the 12 or 14z so Im gonna take the plunge on the DX7.

I have the JR 9303 and I just can come to terms with getting the DX-7. It just feels too cheap and I like the layout of my 9303. I will either wait for the Extreme systems or wait for the Nomadio TX to come out.

Well.. I've fallen in love with them damn thing. Started with the original system and after a three weeks now I've started buying up receivers and started converting the whole fleet. The inconveniences of balance, trainer switch placement, and whatever other shortcomings are secondary compared to the release from the chains of the frequency control issues, model selection safety and ultra low latency. The response feels great and since I recently (and stupidly) busted up one of my helis trying to fly it on the wrong model I was happy to change over to a system that will just no longer allow it.

I moved all the way down from a 10X because I believe that the overall safety and performance of this system well outweighs the features I was losing moving down from the 10X.

My 10X is collecting dust now ...

I second the falling down from a 10x I also have a super 9 Futaba and the DX7 I love the most. I have gassers in my fleet and used to have to worry about the electronics like stator and spark but with the spectrum those kind of noise interference are way down the scale and no longer and issue. I am finally glitch free. My 10x is also collecting dust. My Friend flys totally futaba and when he grabbed my dx7 he said no way this thing feels to light and cheap but when he saw my heli fly with it at the field and hot having to check out a channel he took a double look....LOL he said he will also wait for futaba to come out with one.

I swapped my Futaba 9CHPS for the DX7 system and now fly it on 10 different models, 3 of which are heli's.

I bought it mainly to get off of the 72 mhz band. If that doesn't interest you then don't even look at this system as you have no reason to switch.

As far as the feel of the radio. Just because it is light in weight does not mean it has a cheap feel. To me the weight is one of the pluses. As electronics advances it becomes smaller and lighter. The light weight just makes it easier to hold between your hands. This really helps the balance issue due to lack of a long antenna.

If you fly at a busy field and have not switched then you'll never realize what you are missing. It's a real treat to go to the field and just not have to worry about what everyone else is doing. Makes it worth every penny.

At first I thought I might upgrade to a DX9 or whatever they come out with next but after owning and flying all my models for a few weeks now I see no reason to even think about it. It does everything I will every need.

The only grip I had was they made us wait a couple of weeks for extra receivers. That is not a problem now but really pi$$ed me off at the time.

I'm finished converting every one of my helis and my Twist over to the DX7. I have a 9303 and other than the ease of programing, I don't miss it at all.

I can fire up my Tx at any time while at the field and not worry if I'm causing interference with anyone that's flying. No more trying to start a heli while on the wrong model. No more problems with my Trex SE. It's light as hell compared to my heavy 9303.

I wish I could say that I missed all of the mixing abilities because that would mean that I actually used them. I wish I could say I miss having 9 channels because that would mean that I actually used more than 7.

Now my XTR has a dedicated Tx, it's a 9303.

I don't know how you guys can go to such a lame xmitter compared to the higher end units. It looks cheap, the switches look cheap and the graphics on the screen look cheesy.

Oh well like I said before, the more people go with DX7's the less I need to be concerned with frequencies.

All my helis are synth so channel changes are no biggy.

The field I fly at was once owned by AT&T. It was a pole farm and a low frequency receiving station as I understand it. The poles are gone but I think there is still a lot of wires left underground. The plane guys that fly there have all lost a plane due to lockout. I have had three crashes this year where I was in failsafe and had no control at all. One of those was with a Bell 47 scale heli that I really loved. That did it for me.

I agree with you that once the masses are on 2.4 then you'll have the airways clear for you. I can't agree about the quality of the Spektrum radio though. It's every bit as good as my 9303 only a lot lighter. The display takes getting used to but now that I am, I can blast through programming changes.

Can't understand the negativity from some - It's new technology - of course it will improve -- but at the cost of a couple of Top End Servos it's brilliant value for money .
Okay it's not a Zap or a Mz14 nor is it a small fortune to buy.
I refuse to pay these silly prices for the new Futaba radios - and if Futaba are not sharp they could loose out in the 2.4 Ghz market!!!

Don't get me wrong I love new technology. Just used to getting it from the top down. The no channels is great!

I have not had glitch or lockout issues since I started flying so I have no reason to move to a less featured middle of the road radio.

I would rather see leading edge technology incorporated into the higher quality units. Everybody is selling their DX6's. Somebody is making a mint with thier "give them a little at a time" marketing.
