Small one's yes, at least in the UK anyway. By law things like T-Rex450s are considered as park flyer's. Anything bigger must be flown at authorised site.s

As far as they know, I already had it!

Can you? Sure....

Is it legal? Probably not

I had a cop stop by an empty field where I was flying and he said that it is illegal here in Orange County CA to run ANY RC vehicles (even electrics or cars) anywhere except for private property or a designated field.

He was cool about it and simply asked us to pack up. He said the only reason he was there was because someone called to complain about the noise. There was one guy at the field who gave the cop a hard time and the cop said that he could start handing out tickets. I didn't wait around to see what happened to that one guy but I do recall the cop saying that he personally thought that RC was fun and if no one was damaging property or getting dangerous he would have left us alone (if no one had called).

I don't know the rules in your area for your parks. The practical disadvantage is that they seem to attract kids and dogs like magnets. And not smart ones either.

Just because electric is quiet doesn't make it any less dangerous. Anything larger than a T-Rex is too dangerous for a public park IMHO. Most people (spectators, general public, etc...) see these as toys and don't truely understand the dangers.

Can you fly electric helicopters at the park

I dunno.. But the real question is:

Can you park and electric helicopter on your fly?

Read this thru for the info from AMA:

You'll need to dig thru this, but the answer is in there.

Personally I'll fly my Trex at a park, however I'm always careful, spectactors come out from anywhere and you don't want anything going wrong with them around. Even an innocent test flight can become disastrous.

Don't think that a 450 class heli spinning at 2800to3100 with carbon blades IS NOT dangerious it can screw you up bad heli's are not toys they are dangerious mechines if not handle properly witch means flown in the proper enviroment.

i maybe wrong but in the uk you can fly where you like (except mod land and private propery unless you have permision from the owners and any airtrafic zone) provided you have insurance and you follow ano (air navigation orders) such as "a person shall not recklessly or negligently cause or permit an aircraft to endanger any person or property"
like i said i may be totally wrong .

The answer is, according to the AMA, you can fly anywhere you legally have permission to do so, and have your insurance in full effect. Park, your own backyard, the street, it doesn't matter. They have safety rules , and you have to follow them, but as long as you are legally allowed to fly where you are flying (including a public park), go ahead. Now, if it's safe or a good idea is another matter, but it is legal and insurable.

Re: Flying at the park

I agree with some of the other posts. Even a T-Rex 450 is very dangerous and kids come running when they see them. I've flown my TRex at a local park but it was just a few times at dawn when nobody was around. As soon as people started arriving I packed it in. I've had kids and dogs come running up at our RC field too so never let your guard down!

Yes I do, but I'm at work and I'm squeezing some time to surf here on RR while supervisors walk back and forth behind me, that's why I can't point anyone to the page.

You would need to check with local officials to find out if it IS legal to fly at that park. There may very well be local ordinances prohibiting you from flying there. As far as I know there are no federal laws preventing you from flying at a park so it comes down to the local authorities. Then as stated you need to determine if it's safe to do so. Personally I wouldn't fly at a park unless I could be very sure I wasn't going to attract a crowd.

Thats correct, you need either the owners, or in the case of a park, the managing agency permission to fly and your covered provided you follow the safety code.

But the Placentia/Yorba Linda PD sucks anyway. They almost never go into YL because Placentia is more, shall we say, infested than YL is with criminals...so LOL. I haven't had any problems flying in OC, CA yet, but I've only flown at my local park twice. I usually fly at my clubs field.

I fly my raptor 50 at the local park here on the corner of my job from time to time on my lunch hour. There is a baseball and football field there so there is plenty of room. At lunch time there isn't a lot of people at the park and definately no kids. I have never had the cops called on me. I mean IMO it's a lot better to go and fly at the park where there is room; Even though I may not have permission. Then to fly from my house where it's my property but I'm flying aroung my neighbors houses and cars and kids. A cop really has to have nothing better to do, in order to justify giving you a ticket for flying an r/c heli.

I mean the IMHO the only problem with flying at the park is there is no frquency control

hybrid heli and matching PRIUS!!

While the AMA does not specifically state the kinds of sites you can fly at, they do specify attributes of the flying site that would be hard to establish at a public park. In particular:

Quote
At all flying sites a safety line must be established, in front of which all flying takes place. Only personnel associated with flying the model aircraft are allowed at or in front of the safety line.

Since you don't control the other people in the park, you would be hard-pressed to prove that you were flying within the AMA safety code at a park unless there were physical barriers separating your flying activities from potential spectators. Also, keep in mind that your insurance coverage from the AMA is dependent on your following the safety code.
