The way the notch is cut into the shaft is a guaranteed stress riser. That is why I now use straight shafts with no setscrew notch.

I use blue locking compound on the threads of the set-screws and just a dab of green compound where the base of the set-screw touches the shaft. Those notches are a bend or fracture in the making.

At least you had an in-flight separation. I thought I was the only one. Now there's two of us admitting to an in-flight main shaft fracture.

By the way, great photo. By the look of the intergranular fracture, it looks like it was a very sudden event, i.e., didn't result from a pre-existing fracture or imperfection/defect.

Yes, it appears it was a sudden stress fracture, breaking directly at the notch interface.

E-rod for sure. I just wish I could find a good source of the Stainless Steel needed for my composite main shafts.

Well, I had a "first" this evening. The tailbox decided to completely self destruct. I was only hovering about 5-feet up, so my spinning touchdown caused no additional damage. I'll tear it down tomorrow, just too fed up tonight. And it had been flying so good!

I've not spent money in a while on this heli, but I have been busy with my lathe and mill making my own parts.

Quite frankly, if the 'Rex 250 turns out to be what is hoped for, my HDX300 will be shelved in a heartbeat.

I agree, the HDX300 has been more troublesome than it should be. It will be interesting to see what sort of adjustment may be offered to those of us that bought the darn thing and poured so much time, effort, and money into this heli.

I still haven't torn down the remainder of the tailbox to do a failure analysis. I've been spending too much time flying my other helis as well as amusing my cats with my AirHogs. My big male cat will actually drag the smallest AirHog over to me to fly. He thinks it's his toy to chase. Go figure.

You know the amazing thing? The HDX300 might be a POS, but we've 16,000+ reads on this thread. So we can't be the only ones with this heli!

I like mine when it hangs together and flies properly. It had been flying great until the tailbox decided to blow apart. I plan on taking it the rest of the way apart later this evening. In the meantime, I have some slot car controllers that need new resistors installed.

Well, I finished the tear-down of the tailbox. I can't be sure on the order of the events, but the delrin drive pully is fractured, the two forward side plate screws on the right side are fractured under their heads, and the left side plate is bent. There is also a bow in the left tailbox side plate. And the tailrotor shaft itself now has a bow in it too.

Broken screws have been removed, threads chased, the sideplate straightened, the shaft/pully replaced, and reassenbled with new screws.

I'll test fly after the NASCAR race and see how it goes.

Well, it's back together and flying well again. I wonder for how long this time.

Waaaaay Cool! What did you use for bearings. Swash plate? Did you use a different head or use a lathe to open up the V3 head to 4 mm?

Regardless, a very nice conversion!

I'd very much like to read that. I parked my HDX/Compy hybrid ages ago after it bent an erod mainshaft, been flying a custom built Honey Bee King 2 since then as my only 300 series heli, way more reliable...

I'd really like to get the old HDX hybrid in the air again and a 4mm mainshaft seems like the perfect solution, plus I have the necessary machine tools in the garage, might make a good winter project

I learned to fly on a Trex, I learned to crash on a Blade CP...

Newest mod addition.
press out one mainshaft one way bearing and drill a 5/16 hole through the top plate and drive sprocket.
The tail drive will never slip again.
More to come

I've not had any real issues with the tail drive pulley slipping. I am replacing my one-way bearing for the third time. I'm finding that the gears actually last longer than the bearings. Quite strange!

One way bearing

Has anyone had the one way bearing slip in the main gear?
when this occurs, does the main gear/ one way bearing need to be replaced?
Is there a way to resecure the bearing?
