I just bought a use JR Z230, have not received it yet but I was wondering if I could or should run 100LL aviation gasoline?. I have eazy access to it and it does not smell as bad as car gas.

Not a good idea....

I have tried 100LL in two strokes long ago. First, there is no advantage, functionally. The extra octane is simply not needed in this application. The disadvantages are plug fouling due to the high lead content and the fact that Avgas has a different vapor pressure than Mogas. This means hard starting and possibly poor low speed running.

Thanks for you input Brian. I was hoping for a more positive one but I appreciate your advice. could you or someone tell me if there is a preferred fuel and oil that is used in the gassers

Thanks

87 octane unleaded will do you just fine.

I use Ozark fuel (WalMart's version of Coleman fuel) in my gassers and love it. Two ounces of AmsOil synthetic 100:1 mix to each can (gal) of fuel. No smell and it runs great! About $2.50 a gallon....

So than is Ozark fuel the same as Coleman lantern fuel and can I just go to WalMart or my local camping supply store and buy Coleman fuel. What octane is Ozark fuel

Yes Coleman fuel is comparable to Ozark. The camper fuel is very low octane...60 .

I use half Coleman, half avgas and it runs great. I have read that Coleman has about 50 to 55 octane(varies with each batch) and avgas has 100 octane. I get nice and easy start and most of all, No smell.

How's the power goes? Any depletion of power by using this Ozark or Coleman fuel?

Naomi, I didn't notice one bit of change (except the lack of smell) when switching from gasoline to Ozark. I didn't even touch either needle valve setting. I'm running the Zenoah RC230 engines, so they have more than enough power anyway! The Ozark is very convenient to buy and store....

Mark,
Sounds great.. Oil mixing ratio still be the same as if you were using regular unleaded gas right.. 100:1 ratio ?

Although I use the AmsOil 100:1 synthetic oil, I put in 2 ounces of it per gallon of fuel. Makes it around 85:1 if I recall. Mixed in accordance with the God of Gassers, Bill Meador!

Excellent. That's all in U.S. Imperial measurement.. any idea what's in metric measurement
Now, Coleman fuel is kerosene isn't it, what they are using for turbine.. unless there is another type of coleman fuel..?

I've heard Avgas usually has additives that helps keep the carb clean over a long period of time. As in no gumming up after sitting for a while.

Avgas additivies

All Avgas meets mil specs which dictates it's chemical make up. There are no "anti-gumming" additives, but it's vapor pressure characteristics make it more stable in storage, which means that the volatile components take longer to evaporate. In comparison Mogas will lose the volatiles much more rapidly during storage. This is actually what “gumming” is.

I'm not sure this helps with anything, but with my day job, I can't help myself .

Heli-Gal....You want to run 2 ounces of the 100:1 to every 128 ounces of fuel...Thats 64 :1..I'm saying this just in case you guys go by the queens measurements

Bill

Coleman Fuel

The Coleman fuel refered to here is white gas, also called naptha.

Kerosene is not likely to work well, if at all, in piston engines. Kerosene can be used in some camping stoves (with a change in jetting), but the white gas sure smells better. I'm sure the smell affects the taste of the food.

Phil is very much correct

Heli-Gal,
Run a gallon of 87 octane at 2ounces , then run the ozark, or coleman
I let mine idle the first tank with a rich setting, then on the second tank, hover and fly around....Try to fly more than hover....I don't like to go wide open till after about 3 gallons..I do it after a gallon though every now and then, no more patience as I get older
The very best way to brake a engine in, is to go out and shoot autos for a day That way you keep the temp changing, which is a good thing for the first runs....For those who can't do autos, just hover, then land, and let the engine go to idle for couple mins, then go back to hover...
I mix the fuels sometime too...Sometime I will run 87, then I will run camper fuel....The camper fuel will run a little hottor, but it will clean your engine too...
For as power, one of my good friends beat me at drag racing at a flyin last month...he was running 87 oct at 1850 rpms..I was running 1650 with 720's (not setup to drag and he beat me by a lenght. Not bad for Ozark fuel

Whatever you burn, just be careful....
Regards,
Bill.
