hi guys,

i want to start doing some flips and rolls, can anyone put me in the right direction for how to start doing flips and then on to rolls, im running a venture 30 with a jrxp662

Yes,do them with the heli pointing away from yourself.

Seriuosly though, take the heli up high, that way if the setup is crap or you bog the motor down you should be able to recover without going to pick any bits up.If you can't fly very high yet or at reasonable distance work on the forward flight some more until you can.

To do roll or elevator flips with no forward speed you'll need a fair bit of negative and throttle in idle up,at least -6 with at least 60-70 throttle at low stick,or use a -10,0+10collective with 100,50,100 throttle symmetrical pitch/throttle
type setup, with some cyclic to throttle mixing(if you don't have a GV-1).The mixing isn't essential but helps with rpm loss on underpowered heli's or sloppy timing, which also helps stop the tail stepping out of line,or used to before HH came along.

To do an elevator flip forwards(from upright) , just hold forward cyclic and time the collective(start to take some positive out) to pass through roughly 0 degrees or slightly negative when the heli is nose down and then into enough negative to hold the height through inverted and then transition it back to positve going back to upright. To do them cleaner with less height loss you need to kick the positive pitch slightly (past and above the amount needed to sustain hover)on the first half at the same time the cyclic is initially applied and held in (but only briefly overshoot "kick" on collective before taking it back out). Also kick it into more negative
for a short period while going through inverted back to upright.
Don't worry about trying to kick the collective to start with, just try to time the collective to stop the heli falling inverted to begin with whilst holding a constant cyclic input throughout

A roll flip is basically the same but with L/R cyclic instead of fore aft.

Generally do the rolls into wind ,if there is any,for std FFrolls or roll flip,it makes the collective appear more powerful (less critical on timing) and doesn't need as much engine power in general, for FF rolls it also cuts the groundspeed down.

For an elevator flip start it with the wind direction (tail to wind) so the second half (the recovery from inverted to upright) is back into wind direction

It's all about timing and the setup of the heli really. If it's underpowered or flips too slow it'll make the timing harder,so until you know what it does ,do the first ones quite high in case it goes pear shaped on you.
Also if you find the collective with combined cyclic drags all the rotorspeed off,it's better to take some out and keep the cyclic, but the panic reaction is usually to slam more of both in,which just makes it worse

Thr Mix

Don't forget to mix the cyclic to THR, it help a lot.

I prefer to do rolls down wind, not into the wind as this will help maintain ytour forward airspeed. Also a right aileron roll is a bit easier than a left roll on a right hand rotating disc due to the left side of the disc having more lift as it is the advancing side. Collective timing is the key to most any manuevor.

Once you get comfortable doing true stationary flips, try doing a traveling backwards flip in FF. Again it's a timing thing and it really looks good when executed properly.

Get a good head of speed up in a fast straight line then give a touch of collective and pull back on the elevator all the way as the nose of the heli passes vertical give full negative collective and maintain back elevator until the heli comes back around and feed in positive collective to finish it out as the heli gets around nose down to push the through the manuevor.

Downwind rolls have a higher perceived groundspeed but not necessarily a higher airspeed,it could be equal or less if the wind speed is high.
IMO i don't believe it to be the safer direction relative to the wind to practise a
roll ,they just visually look better (usually) and are easier to make look good going with the wind direction because the fore aft attidude of the heli does not have to be watched as closely to keep the speed over the ground going when trying to do multiple rolls.

You are right, the heli is less likely to try to come to a halt or slow up during them, like when going with the wind direction.
But going into wind ,if that happens , is just right conditions for getting into hovering roll practise,so it's not actually a bad thing to have happen,it also teaches someone a lot about fore aft cyclic management through consecutive rolls to keep forward momentum over the ground (groundspeed from a fixed piloting viewpoint)

Practising with the wind direction, the heli appears to roll faster but is only covering more ground during it .If
someone was to make a total cockup of a roll ,like diving too much during it or dragged a lot of the headspeed off, they are more likely to crash when trying to recover rolling downwind than upwind, but this is only true when it's very windy,in a light breeze there wouldn't be much in it.
