It is a shame that the AMA won't step in to help iron out these situations. Also this is were an organization like IRCHA could be of great help. IRCHA is a SIG of the AMA and if IRCHA really wanted to start showing its value to the heli community they would step up to the plate and try to address theses situations with the AMA and look out for the interests of our heli community.
But just like the AMA, IRCHA is a BS organization with little to offer its members or potential members. Lot of good the IRCHA- Heliproz discount will do you if you can't fly your heli as a AMA member at a AMA field.

Try to organize your own club if you can. I know it is not much of an answer. Good luck buddy!

I'm not long starting out, the club i fly with fly both, not any big planes just smaller foamies and things. It helps relax and not to have to concentrate on them as hard as you have to with heli's

Glad to see others can get along like our club. It is not dificult. I cant see why Hackensack had so many problems. But....with them being so anti helicopter....we have gain a lot of rew members that are AWESOME!!!! Great guys that are just looking for a place to fly and also looking to get along with everyone. So it all works out.

Look at our videos from the above post...looks like we are having a blast ...right? We are!

I am just curious as to what the process would be.

1. Get 10 or so AMA pilots?

2. Get a charter?

3. Petition the county for a field?

How does one go about this?

We got a lot of hassle at the local AMA field so we started flying at a HS football field. Nice grass to crash on, instead of lava and asphalt, cooler, shade. Yesterday one of the old plankers came in and asked where we had been, I told him we had 11 flyers at the HS and wasn't he glad we weren't down cluttering up his flying? "No, we need you guys down there," he said. Heck if I knew what he was talking about! When we did fly there, there was constant tension. I do know their numbers are dwindling, and they aren't attracting any new guys. We are though

I have the sme sort of situation. A friend of mine startig flying helo's and wasnt very welcomed were we fly fixed.. I ran into him at the LHS I asked where the heck he had been. Well long story short I now fly helo's and it started with the two of us, just last Tuesday nite we seven guys flying at a very private site..

I say adapt and overcome. I have all the paper work for a new club and charter. We are going to make it official then start exploring a new more long term site.. Remeber Helo's dont need near the airspace a fixed wing guy needs..

Our "heli night" at the club has been going very well. We have tuesday evenings as a heli only night (we fly the rest of the week also) there is a flyer at the LHS, and word of mouth. Anyone interested in flying heli can come out. There are a few of us who help setup the heli's, safety, and concerns about flying a heli are gone over. Its working out fantastic, You do not have to be a club member to fly on Tuesday night, just AMA sanctioned. It has already generated a bunch of new membership. The plank flyers even come out to hang out, and watch on Tuesdays, could not ask for a better setup.

This is a subject thats been going on since the invention of rc helis. It will enver change or go away. At our club its is mostly guys over 50 a couple in thier 40s then 3 new guys in thier 30's. It is nice having some younger blood in the club. Thre are only 2 of us that fly helis and the rest of the club dont seem to care for the most part and if they did oh well they never come out to fly anyways. But we do have a father and son team there the son being 49 years old and still lives at home and his daddy who is not a member of the club but sure voices his opinion all the time. Have gone out of thier way to try and get the club banned from this property tried to get the club to ban helis all kinds of issues with these guys. Here is the catch they do not fly at the club field nor will they so what is it to them? Gotta have something to complain about. That I feel is the basic thing with most anti heli people they just aint happy unless they are making someone else miserable.

The AMA treats helicopters the same way in their magazine, as a lot of clubs do...Just put in a small corner off on the side and hope it goes away.

It was nice to see a small change in this month's edition, as there was a review of the Trex SE V1 (slightly dated, but still informative) Hopefully over time as the popularity of helicopters continues to increase, so will acceptance.

I am going off topic here but if you noticed the last couple months the AMA mag is doing a much beter job with the helo's. I see some changes there they may be small but its good to see somebody in there that is in touch with the helicopter SIG! Sorry just had to say that.

Planks are for pilots that can't fly helicopters.

If a club allows plankers to fly 3D....the same club should allow helicopters to fly. Pretty simple I think.

Yeah....most of the old men are the ones who piss, moan and cry. OMG....whe had an old man ( who REALLY likes to hear HIMSELF talk) at last night's meeting that went on and on about helis and 3D and how unsafe it is and now one is courtious. When it is time to land....you yell out...."Coming in" How hard is that????

Maybe he should find another place to fly.

Why doesn't anyone try to ban the planks from the fields? Wouldn't that just be a fun change of pace.
