Batteries

I have a TP 2100 3-cell LiPo rubber banded to the bottom of my frame. It gives about 22 minutes flight time.

WOW! Don't know if I could fly that long. I would think the extra weight would have reduced your flight time, but I guess not.

Did you have to do much modifying to slip the better battery in? It would be great to see a photo of your setup if you had time. Your post is amazing timing--I just got one of those to go in a powered sailplane.

I tried e-flite blades, but couldn't get them to track. My setup is the stock heli with a TP-1320 lipo, hs-55 servos(old servos had to much slop) and a gy401 gyro.

I've seen some DD tails on the net, but have never flown one or seen one locally. The DD's I've seen are brushless.

How long of flight times is normal with the stock battery & charger? I would get 2 or 3 minutes before the battery would die in just seconds. Called Hobby Services, they sent me a new charger. Now I'm up to maybe 4 minutes, just hovering & figure 8's in the driveway. Any ideas? Dave

If at all possible get a 3cell 910 or 1320 li-po battery ,you will be well pleased compared to the stock battery.

I get about 9 minutes with a 3 cell 1320 mah lipo. It's the only way to go.

i had both

i had the Blade CP PRO and now i have the AXE CP...for beginners, the AXE is inherently more stable than the "Hummingbird on crack" Blade CP....

WOW good job bustedmp for holding a post this long, Dec 14th 2006 to now,you can thank me for that.

I'm such a newb,first post,happy owner of an axe cp of 2half weeks,2nd set of blades,having an absolute blast with this flying devil,very challenging for me but the wife says I'M gettn better,that must mean something good rite?
I need to upgrade to LIPO TP 1320,or is it posable to stuff a tp 2100? is it worth the added weight? I'm but a newb asking of the PRO's of air heli flight some advice. any help would be much appreciated

@BOBOTECH:If you look up someone said they were using a 2000+ mah battery by rubber banding it to the bottom. One thing to note is you'll have to play with the placement so you get the balancing of the heli proper so the battery won't be exactly centered under it unless you have a weight of the original battery in its place + the other one.

As for the rest of this message. Hello everyone just registered today got my Axe CP about a week ago. 3rd set of blades, second boom, 2nd set of blade grips, carbon tail blade (much better than original). For anyone reading or wondering my personal stand on the plastic main blades is they're garbage. The LHS suggested I try those since its been about 10 years since I flew an r/c heli (had a Concept 30) so they told me to try those that they're good for beginners. Needless to say thats when the grips and boom got replaced along with them. I'm toying with the idea of the carbon blades but the price is a bit high for as fast as I tear them up. If the carbon would stand thru kissing the boom or even the floor I might consider it but if they get torn up like the wood or plastic I can't afford that. As it is I paid $170 for the heli and dumped about $500 for extras now incl parts, spare battery, new charger (duratrax ICE - I love it) Anyone got comments on the carbon main blades?

I have a 1345mAh LiPo and 2 of the original batteries. Gotta say those LiPo kick butt. It doesn't fit quite right so I put some foam mounting tape on it for padding and rubber band it down tight so it doesn't go anywhere. I may look into replacing the stock servo's as I noticed lots of slop everywhere.

I have a big problem and can't get the tail right. Maybe its me but I never remember my nitro having this problem. As I start out it takes about 1/3 stick for the tail to start moving at which point the heli is already torque spinning. Once it gets some speed up on the tail it straightens out till I lift off then it starts to spin. I attempt to trim it on the transmitter and get it pretty good but then as soon as I change the throttle position it goes way out of whack again. I'm not really up on this electric stuff and that e-board confuses the hell out of me. I assume there's something set wrong on there but I have no idea where to start as it has 3 pots left/right bias, tail rotor trim, and gyro gain. I'm not sure about the gyro gain as the concept I had someone else setup the radio for me and the other 2 pots...I have no clue. Anyone got ideas or instructions on how to set that up. The manual is less than helpful for that.

I'm new to heli's, figured I'd start with the heli-max. got all the CNC parts. I THINK it's ok, after about 2 weeks of cycling thru a couple batteries almost every night I can get it to spend a couple minutes in a 10' square, couple feet off the ground. The CF blades are nice - light weight, look good, but you get too close to the fence and *WHAM* 40 bucks wasted (actually only 20, only ruined 1 blade)
I have a problem with the thing wanting to drift left - no matter what I do. I don't quite understand the adjustments, or how they inter-relate, but I want to get another radio. I sae a post where someone replaced the electronics and said it's more stable. Anybody got any tips for this beginner?

@d23: I'm not sure what you mean by "drift" left. If you mean like its trying to do a roll to the left instead of swinging the tail left like giving it right rudder, I found my Axe did the same thing with all the stock parts except tail blade being CF. I can't really say about radio equipment but changing to a heading hold gyro might help with tail drifting. That starts getting a little involved though. I have now totally screwed up my Axe and decided to scrap it. It was getting quite expensive on parts. I've now gone through 4 main shafts trying to get them into the drive gear and I keep bending them somehow because they're such a tight fit. I even broke one of the gears because it was so tight. The hobby shop I purchased the parts at is less than helpful. They even had one of their guys put it in for me at no charge but even he bent it somehow and they still made me keep the part. I didn't notice it was bent till I mounted the rotor head and spun it around and they say I may have bent it mounting the head. I also messed up the bearings that go on the main shaft and the whole rotor head now. I decided this machine just doesn't like me and ordered a MX400. I'm going out to get a Spektrum DX7 tomorrow and the heli should get here Friday or Saturday.

You might want to think about possible balancing issues if you try to mix blades from different packs as I found them to have really different weights and CG points. In short it really isn't a good idea. If you trash one blade you may as well toss both because you're going to have big balancing/wobbling issues unless you spend lots of time to properly balance them out which really isn't worth it.

Having actually flown another heli prior to my Axe I find it to be quite a difficult unit for a beginner. Not impossible but not the easiest. Definately not a cheap beginner heli. You will be replacing lots of parts crashing and what not. I couldn't justify spending the money on the CNC parts when I could get a different heli with better starting equipment for cheaper than what the CNC parts upgrade would cost. Granted it comes with a radio but honestly I find the radio quite lacking. The tail rotor system (using separate motor) is quite difficult for me as with the stock battery it doesn't last very long to get it in trim and by the time you do the battery is going low and throws the rpm of the tail off throwing you right back out of trim making it really really hard to hover unless you just say screw the trim and manually compensate with rudder inputs while hovering, which isn't a bad idea to learn that skill either but for a beginner will definately detract from the "fun" factor that should be there.

it wants to d-r-i-f-t to the left - maintains heading, it looks level - I thought there was a slight breeze that I couldn't feel, so I lined up the other way to see if it would drift right. nope. it WANTS to go left. As for blades - I balance them statically and dynamically - CG within .0005inches (yes, 3 zeros), weight within .005 grams. I have nice tools. I started out with all CNC parts. the only thing I broke (besides a few blades) was a stock blade grip when I accidentally hit the death switch with the heli sitting on the living room floor with the battery still attached. THAT scared the krap outta me!
I can see where a belt driven tail rotor would be better.
