Hi guys I have a Futaba 7CAP and it would be great to use with this Helimax AXE!

Is it just a matter of changing a crystal or?

Thanks for the tips!

Tail is supposed to feel notchy. If you want a better holding tail pull the geared tail off and slap this on the motor shaft.

I am also hearing some good things about the GWSEP-0320 press on prop.

hey guys,i have used the direct drive gws props and they do work well, as sound neat too! but the problem with karl's heli tail isnt a result of the gear. i only say i know this because i had it in my hand the other day. i believe the problem is in either one of the windings or a bushing problem with the actual motor. i have had quite a few of these micro's with lots of different tail setups and mechanically these little n60 and comparable sized motors leave little to be desired. i have found that the endbells like to come loose in a crash, so i always put a dab of 30 minute epoxy on the intersection of motor can to endbell 180* apart. also put a very small drop of 3 in 1 or any light oil of your choice on the motor bushings. the only other thing i have seen before is the motor mounting screws being a hair too long and interfering with the armature (or just stopping it and burning up the speed control/mixer).
anyway, i really like the axe cp design, i look forward to getting my own real soon. i have been flying the blade cp since its release and all the updates and mods along the way and i think i have reached its limits and want to try another micro.
the t-rex is awesome and i wouldnt trade mine for nothing. i still like to fly all around the house and land on small areas here and there for fun and the t-rex can do too much damage in the house (esp to me) also the precision flying practice on such a squirmy little heli sure does'nt hurt when you're out flying the 50's and 90's either. have fun guys. see ya.

I put a single conversion crystal in my axe to get it on he same ch as my optic 6, then it was only a matter of getting the numbers right. It works much better with a good tx, and good programming.

It's a good day for a guinness!!!

Thanks Dan, I'll check into those screws. I just found out you can put a gy240 upgrade on this baby. The info is on helimax's site.
Waiting to hear from someone whos done it to see if its worth the extra $$.

I had all seperates on mine. I used the G90 eflight gyro. It worked well. I also changed out the blade grips using the Blade CP's. I only did that becuase the blades were cheaper than the AXE. I have suspected that one could cut down the Trex blades to fit. Also The main shaft between the two are the same so you could use the Trex metal swash too. Helimax is very proud of their upgrades.

Prelim checks

Ok, we just got the time and our mits on our brand new AXE.

I put it together and secured the training gear with heavy weights and fired it up right in the living room.

All functions check out and I made a small adjustment so tracking is perfect. Smooth running all around. Power / duration seems fine.

Now then before I go any farther, I want to add some flybar weights to buy a little extra stability, and I really want to throw in my AR6000 receiver (my LHS just got them in today, FINALLY).

It looks like simply a matter of removing the existing receiver and installing the AR6000.

Can someone confirm, I'd like to be sure before I go removing the analog stuff.

Thanks!

Hello?

A week with no response? This forum seems a bit dead...

I went ahead and installed the DX6 radio sucessfully. I did a bunch of tests and did a bunch of research.

As a result, I am replacing the stock servos with HS-55 servos. Better. More torque. They will help you hold a more solid hover, an thus be safer.

Looking into a better gyro now. What is a heading hold gyro? I will find out if its better than the integrated stock gyro.

Other forums

There appears to be much more Helimax Axe activity over at the RC Universe Helimax forum and then the RC Groups forum for the Axe.

Not sure why but that is the way it is.

Well OK I'll resurrect this thread. I've been flying (er hovering) my AXE CP for a couple of months now. Not without a few mishaps though. I'm considerable better on the Reflex sim! Flybar weights, absolutely essential until you get the feel of this touchy bird. Went through 2 of 3 servo failures, replaced with HS-55 (cheaper than Helimax BTW), no problems since. Would love to put a GY240 or Elite gyro on it.

I have a question though, I can't seem to get the Idle up (CP) and normal mode's to apply proper throttle-pitch control. If I setup CP mode with zero pitch at 1/2 throttle, then I have too much pitch for the rpm in normal mode. I can't remember if this was correct when it was new, too many 'incidents' since then. Don't see any trims or adjustments I can do to separately adjust. So I just set it up for higher rpms in normal mode by adjusting the 3 servo linkages longer (CCPM). If I WERE to go into CP mode now, it would apply severe negative pitch at mid-throttle. Anybody else have this problem?

Well, I just got the Axe cp, I also own the tooth pick designed Blade CP pro. I must say the Axe is a much stronger frame, But I think the electronics on the blade are superior. As a beginner I am more comfortable with the Axe heli. The E-flight is more of an intermediate Heli. I was spending too much money on replacement parts when I would crash. So I decided to buy the Axe. (My friend sold it to me 4 $125.00 brand new.) Plus the Blade cp parts I can use on the Axe. They are way cheaper/stronger. I have used the tail blades, fly-bar shaft, and main blades. I am excited to see where this heli will go as far as aftermarket upgrades.

Kickin @SS!!!

Well I've made TONS of progress with my Axe CP!!

I got the hang of 2d flight! I can fly huge circles and 8's at my local park and maintain steady altitude, even in a light breeze! Got the hang of pretty, coordinated turns!

I can get her up to 100' altitidude, then dive and zoom past me within a few feet!! Great fun!

GO nOOBs!!! It can be done!! Need LOTS of SIM TIME!!!

It took lots of fine tuning, tweaking, and practice to get this far. Be patient!

Great news Mark! I'm right behind you, not quite there, but closing in. Hovering pretty stable now, not sweating it so much, been up to about 30ft, even slowly hovered over a volleyball net then came back under it -- doesn't sound like much, but was quite a thrill to accomplish for me.

Hello Everyone,
I just recieved my Axe CP as a gift and it flew right out of the box with stock battery. Must of been one Helimax picked out and trimmed ,I must say I'm pleased with mine.

Congrats Arnie! Now you need 3 more batteries and maybe a LiPo to really enjoy it. How much experience/flight time do you have, sounds like you've got a fair amount.

Hello Steve,
Yeah I have a couple of years experience under my belt ,but I still enjoy my roots of a tail motored heli and the Axe CP is an improvement over the popular Blade CP which I still own. I read all the post on the Axe CP and getting a lipo was a no brainer.

Wallet hurled again!

Ok guys, my wallet just hurled again: $45 for a whole new tail assembly and main gear.

The problem is this: I can't get past Step 1 unless everything is factory spec. The entire complex system must pass QA 100%.

Especially the darn tail. If it failed in flight and the Axe went down in a bent heap I could only blame myself. Better to pay up. Its just the cost of learning to fly. I knew going into the deal it would not be cheap.

BUT I had made so much progress so quick and then suddenly boom boom and I'm on my 3rd set of blades. I intend to keep these a while.

So now I have a spare tail motor with no gear... might come in handy if I can get a new gear on it.

Also replaced the main gear. No sense going half way on the repairs.

Tomorrow, she'll be 100% pass QA and in spec. Then I will VERY carefully get the tail dialed in - I really want to nail down my 3-in-1 board settings, and NOT crash in the process!!!

I can hardly believe its like this after I've been flying patterns 100' up with this thing - but its imperitive to start at the beginning when complex systems backfire.

My tail problem must have been the eboard getting warm. Flying without the canopy there was no problem at all.

A few weeks ago as I was landing a gust of wind came up, the heli tipped just far enough to touch the blades then sat down. It rolled the tips and broke the tail blade.

Anyway, I've just ordered a Gohbee Stinger 90 so the AXE must go to help fund the new project, it needs only main blades and tail blade. The original sets are still on it. Had about a dozen flights, no crashes. Stickers never applied to purple canopy, channel 54. Any takers for $110 plus actual shipping of choice? If no response here by May 24th I'll purchase the blades and put it on ebay. Please PM so we dont clutter the post. I can email pics if requested.

Tail Fixed! Forward Flight Again!!!

Well Duh! I went into replace the Tail Motor when I saw it was simply loose - the screws were out of position!

Easy fix, and my LHS gave me store credit. Fine!

I was making so much progress when suddenly I'm on my 3rd set of blades - BUT today I had my first timid venture back into forward flight and despite a very slight breeze, came home intact after 2 full packs!

I am still trying to get the tail dialed in, but at least its running smooth enough. Minor issue of "whirr whirrrr WHIRrrr whirrWhirrr-wh-whirrr-WHIRRRrrrr-whirrRRrrr". But its tame enough to almost ignore. Like my sound effects?

No more of that harsh Chittering, like that of Squirrels. Oi! Vay...

The issue still remains that the DX6 insists on nearly full Right Rudder Trim to keep a heading. So, I am always nudging the throttle stick to the right, which sometimes means I am changing Throttle which I don't like.

The slight breeze made everything a little shaky, but after some good hopping, did some low hovering, then some high hovering, then timidly went into some half-8's and did some half-coordinated turns. Finally, I was able to swing out, turn around, and have her fly by me, then flare into a hover, and do it all again a couple times.

Very cool! Just need some really calm weather though. That slight breeze had me execute a couple Crash Avoidance Maneuvers but nothing really panicky. I did SLAP down hard and flat on the skids once, but thanks to the training gear and the toughness of the Axe frame, I just resumed hovering on the bounce up! Whew!

I can't do much more until I get the radio and e-board dialed in, but for now, all the hardware is solid. I'm doing a thorough Post-Flight Check on everything tonight, so its ready for the weekend!

Eggseeellent! Maybe your tail trim problem is that the trim pot on the e-board is backwards, turning it CCW makes the heli turn right and vice versa. Take a look.

I have flown all 4 packs with no problems, but that is more of a rarity. Crashed after 1 1/2 packs last week, slight breeze, my fault totally. I had enough courage to head it nose in from a distance and try to hover and land (with this non-heading hold tail business). All was fine until I flared. Didn't flare enough due to now coming in downwind AND my controls are desensitized a lot compared to my nitros when I moved the links inward 1 notch weeks ago. So tonight I'll put the links back to original locations on the servos, epoxy the tail motor holder back on, and repair one main rotor. No cost crash at least!
