Radio - JR & Spektrum DSM > How did you balance the DX7

Just to confirm it does balance perfect, the antenna being slightly lower
than the screen part, I would say about 5 degree...

So, If you want to replace the old hook, all you have to do is unscrew the factory one? It is that easy?

Not really, but if you go up a bit on this thread, you will read : about an hour of easy work...

IMO the REAL fix here would be to somehow relocate the battery to the top of the case. This would require Spektrum to modify the design of the case rather than using the same case as the 7202.

I'm thinking about adding some lead weight to the top/back of the TX. The extra weight shouldn't bother me too much since I fly with a neck strap.

I've had heavy radios and prefer these light weight ones - Moving the attachment point is more sensible to me.

The issue I see with moving the attachment point is that if you put pressure on the TX it will tip at a point where I don't expect it to - the "CG" is changed. Most TX's have the CG in line between the gimble's.

I think the best solution is to redesign the case to move the battery to the top of the case putting the CG back where I expect it. Adding weight is not an ideal workaround but with a neck strap it shouldn't be too big of a deal.

This is all just conjecture for me so far since mine is wrapped up and under the Christmas tree. Hope I get it before the dogs pee on it. I may change my mind after using it with 8oz of weight attached, we shall see!

Why not use a lighter battery like an 1100ma 3s lipo. You can add a dean’s connector between the battery and radio connector. I’d add a diode on the radio side to drop the V. Then unplug the deans and charge it on a lipo charger. The lighter battery should help the balance without dropping run time too much.

Are you guys really serious about all this balance stuff?

I sold my 9C and started flying with the DX7. Sure it felt a little different the first couple of times but after many flights it just becomes natural. Like anything else you get use to it and it's a non-issue.

I think you are going to a lot of trouble for nothing.

Just my opinion.

It makes quite a difference in comfort to me if I don't have to hold a position myself and it just hangs perfectly level on it's own hands off - I can relax my hands and have a nicer feel on the controls - My DX6 does this with the alternate attachment point I gave it and it's quite nice -

That was the second thing I tackled after swapping out the gimble springs.

I guess because the radios DX6/DX7, (I have both) are so light it really hasn't been a concern to me. Now if it were as heavy as my 9C was then it would be a different story.

The point is that you can get use to it and never think about it. But if it bothers you then you need to take action. I am still so new at flying Hel's that I am too darn nervious to worry about the balance of the heli. Hell, I am just trying to make it go where I want it to go.

I think you're missing the point of not having to "hold" the radio level - It should rest level naturally - If you're going to "hold" the radio anyway then you don't really have much use for a strap.

Captain Chaos...

That's cool! I think you should market that, or maybe sell the idea to Spektrum and maybe get a some royalties out of it...yeah right!
Anyway, best idea I've seen yet. Nice and clean, as it folds down out of the way for those of us who hold their radios as they fly.

That is an excellent solution! What material did you use, just spring wire with two small holes in the case?

Very neat.

That would probably work too and maybe be simpler than what I did if you could know exactly where and what angle to drill - But mine is actually 18 or 20gauge? electrical wire with knots tied at the ends on the backside of the face plate - I dismantled the radio and removed the silver face plate drilled the holes fed the wire tightly tied the knots and reassembled it all -

I used this same wire in a similar fashion on my DX6 and it's still holding strong after a year of use -

By removing the face plate I found it'd actually be kinda tricky to just blindly drill into it for hitting some of the mounting screws etc - In fact the holes I drilled are right up against screws that hold the face plate from the backside - I didn't actually have much choice where to drill in that general area because of two sets of screws occupying that area back there.

Thanks for the feedback. It would be pretty risky just to drill in from the outside randomly.

Ho much work is it to remove the faceplate etc to do it the way you did?

Only 26 screws
2 screws at the bottom corners of the silver face plate
6 screws to detach the back plate
1 screw to detach the battery connection to fully free the back plate
4 screws to detach the rf deck (unplug antenna)
3 screws to detach the power switch
8 screws to detach both gimbals
2 screws kinda hidden below the base of the lower rf mount
Face plate can finally be detached all by itself

LMAO

At what number does the term "only" cease to apply?

I just put some lead weights inside the top of the radio. It works just fine and took me less than 10 minutes.

It wasn't me, it was my thumbs!
