Just Curious,

If one mounted a camera on the rear of the boom forward facing, would it allow somone to fly thier heli just from looking at the downlink?

My reasoning is, you can see the attitude of the heli in relation to the ground. A nose mounted camera would be hard to tell.

Hello Portblock:

Well actually it depends on a lot of circumstances like the wide angle of vision of the lens, also the angle setup during the installation, resolution, etc. You should also keep in mind that the position where you put the camera will always afect the gravity center of the heli...right?. (hummm...yes if you are flying and electric or micro heli...no if you are flying a bigger one). I belive that finding a place for installing the camera from the cockpit would be better.

i've benn thinking on a project of controlling the heli with a camera installed on it so you can feel like you are inside of it. I believe this would give more realism to the hobbier to "fly" the heli.

Hope this helps. for the record I'm a begginner, but also an enginneer. In electronics and electricity I'm not a begginer.

Regards,

Joaquin

In regards to your post Joaca,

I think that would be a great idea.

I have an idea too. It could really cool if you could go and buy sensors that would go on your heli and it would be displayed as an attitude meter on your radio. That way, you would know if your heli is going off on an angel. You could see the balance on your screen while watching the live video.

Just like a real one, but it would be all digital .

That's it .

How do you do that to your heli?

Looking at his previous post i'd say all you need is loads of time, a good brain for electronics development and about 25k lol

Flying off video

Video flight is the easiest way to fly your heli. The best part is the ability to know if your centered on an area etc.

The tricky part is this:

- Mount your camera on the nose or on the gear so you have a level referance point. You can place tape on the monitor to simulate a horizontal plane. The tape acts as a referance only.

- The key is to NOT place a cam mount on a pilot view that can pan. Tilt is ok to a small degree. I make mine tilt the full but is mainly for adjustment reasons if in a stabilized semi autonomous hover (Like when using a level assist etc), not really for use when I am flying.

- Another hard part is the flair. As you move in on something closer you have to slow down to creep up on it. As you do this your tilting backward makes the camera not see what you are approaching. You can fix that issue with the camera being gyro leveled etc, but then that causes you to not really feel what the copter is doing. You can see that your distance is closing in or moving away etc, but leaving the cam alone and staionary insures you know what is the REAL movement of the heli. Altitude as always makes the whole thing easier, its when you are trying tight and close in flights that can be tricky.

- Next is the safety. Have a friend maintain constant sight of the heli as a spotter and have him on buddy line just in case.

- Spend good money on the video link and make sure the antenna is Hi db and mounted away from shadow interferances etc like gear and so on. (Diversity receivers are great I might add)

** My current projects goal is to do all of this routinely and not as a experiment. I will post the results this summer.

- If you have a laptop, eagle tree systems makes an on screen artificial horizon in real time and live.. Havent tried them yet, but will soon Im sure.

- Practicing on a flight sim is the best way to feel what to expect.

It's a blast

I noticed Airfoil has a dashboard system on their website that you can hook up to your laptop and get real time info about your heli. You would still need your camera for visual though.

Has anyone tried the system airfoil has?

The Eagle tree system

That is the Eagle tree system available in the UAV area of their site. Bill at Eagle tree is awsome and very willing to support and answer all of the questions.

They are beginning to really advance their stuff. He anticipated an On screen display eventually. For now I believe they have the dashboard screen for the radio and live info on a laptop.

I noticed they have advanced the first versions for more range etc.. No autonomous flying yet but it appears to be pretty good for the money..

I know this isn't quite what your looking for but I can hover this while wearing the VR1000 goggles. Peeps tell me I can stay within 12-18 inches of my spot. Flying room to room is fun but scarey due to drop out. I wish I had access to a gym with an obstacle course, IE- wiffles on balsa sticks or pushing a beach ball around for a game of hockey, sort of. BUT, then again it is an XRB and stable as can be.

Is there anyone in southern New Jersey that is flying their heli via video downlink?
