Hi just thought I would share some photos of a Shuttle that I originally bought as spare parts that I ressurected from the dead!. It is now finished and ready to fly! I built a few things myself including the nice wide landing gear, muffler and the blue washplate support thingy...? Haha, I don't even know what it's called!
It makes for a fun project when you do something like this!

Thanks!

Thanks for the compliment!
Yeah, I took dimensions from the pipe that is on my other Shuttle, cross referenced that with the muffler of a .40 size plane engine, took a look at a Hirobo muffler, and well........took a wild guess and came up with this! I figure it's good to about a .30-.40 engine so we'll see how it works! Hehe! The main body and end cap are machined from round stock aluminum, the header is machined from bar stock, the exhaust is 3/8" .049 wall thickness and header pipe is 3/4" .049 aluminum tubing. Took me a few practice runs on scrap to get the whole aluminum brazing figured out but we'll see how it works and if it's ok, I want to try making a couple more. I thought it looked better than the black Shuttle mufflers.
Should be ok.....I hope! Of course I polished the snot out of it as well!

What are you using for aluminum brazing material. I bought a cadmium product from the local welding supply but have never gotten it to work at all. Been looking at the rod type but havent seen anyone else use it so am apprehensive about wasting my money.
I agree on the black muffler looking like a turd. I polished my stocker until it glowed.

Myles,
The blue stuff on your shuttle is called Anti-Rotation Guide, it stabilized the swashplate from rotating and as well serve as a guide for the elevator up and down motion..
Is that the original shuttle with the OS 28 engine with Belt drive? A friend of mine has one like that with blue canopy , not sure about his landing skid is aluminum though.

Brazing Information

Anti-rotation guide...that's what it's called!
I made the landing skids myself from aluminum, same as the boom supports. They are both 3/8 .049 tubing. The legs are actually cut from aluminum angle sliced lengthwise and brazed to the skids.

Here is some info on what I'm using for brazing- the flux is from Turbo Braze Corp. 687 Lehigh Ave, Union NJ. 07083 (got the address off the side of the bucket) and the rods, all I can find on the box is UTP #4 and it's 1/16".
I work in the auto air conditioning field and we do a ton of aluminum brazing of fittings and tubing of all kinds. The stuff I used is actually leftover flux in the bottom of the buckets, brazing rods, and tubing going to the scrap heap. And case any of my Supers read this "YES I GOT THE OK TO USE IT!!
I find it works very well.
To Heli_Gal, it is a belt drive but it has a brand new OS 32F in it which I traded for ....are you ready......the original skids and supports for!! Lady luck was on my side that day!
Thanks to all!

Well....

.....two thing will can happen! It will either work or it won't! Seriously, I should be able to answer that question tomorrow night! If the weather will allow me to, I want to fire up the beast tomorrow. I will be sure to post my results

Unfortunately, the product you're using is only available in large commercial amounts. After searching a bunch of engines I finally located the american site. They have a lot of good stuff for welding aluminum but as I said, in commercial amounts. Guess I'll have to keep looking. Maybe I'll just buy a new mig, the old one is too much of a hassle to change every time I want to heli-arc.

Does anyone know if the Aluminum brazing rod at Harbor freight is any good?

Breaking in the engine

Well, I had it fired up the other day! The new muffler sounds pretty cool!
Could I get some advice on breaking in the engine? I not familiar with breaking in heli engines just yet. It's new but an older OS 32F. I ran it pretty rich for the first tank which seemed to go very fast, just sitting there idling cause I had the needle open about 4-5 turns. Not sure what I should do. Should I take it out and break it in on a test stand?
All advice is appreciated.
Thanks to all!

jheli....I tried that stuff out a couple years back but didnt have any luck with it. The best I've used was a rod that I picked up on Ebay. I lost the addy to the lady selling the stuff but she comes back on in the RC section frequently. She sells a half pound of rods for 12.00 with flux paste.

Atious,

I'm curious as to what brand of brazing rod you purchased from Harbor freight and what kind of problems you were having with it.

Thanks
