Bergen R/C Helicopters > Bergen Intrepid Review

Hello,
I have been flying the Bergen Intrepid 60 with torque tube and driven tail for a couple of months now. It is a very solid machine and well put together. It takes every high load manuever I throw at it and it just laughs in my face like it was nothing. The crash cost are not outrageous as I put it in a couple of times and the parts cost ranged from $80 to about $150.

My electronics are a GY-601 on the tail, 9252's on the cyclics, 9402 on collective, and standard servo on throttle. I am using the Thunder Tiger 680mm carbon composite blades and they run very strong. I was running 97MS tail blades, but went to NHP 95mm tail blades and even though the NHP's are 2mm shorter they hold better than MS. I had to lower my gyro gain a little bit. The machine has the split gear, heavy dut elevator upgrade, and the double O-ring head. The head gives the helicopter a rigid, but not super rigid head. I tried to tighten up the head like my Fury once, but the Bergen doesn't like it. I'm using a YS. 61 ST2 with the Hatori SB-14. Probably will be going to a YS. 91 soon.

The helicopter flies very smooth and stable, yet it will flip very fast. It tracks like it's on rails. Piroflips and other advanced manuevers are completed almost effortlessly and it is like the heli is on autopilot. It enters manuevers very nice with no bad tendancies and is a pleasure to fly.

I had always heard about Bergens, but never tried one. This experience has so far been a very good one and I will continue to fly it for quite a while. The price for the kit may be high, but it is because of all the fine machining they do on the helicopter. Parts that are broken normally on crashes are in the cheap to moderate range. It's definately a helicopter to look into and not count out as a good model on the market.

Take Care and Happy Flying !

Great service and support as well!

Really nice to be able to pick up the phone and speak with the gentleman who made your helicopter. Larry, is a wealth of information, as well a pleasure to speak with.

Supper nice/knowledgeable people. The service and support could not be any better. I hear that the manuals are coming out in print as well, as not everyone wants to build them on the mouse pad. Just kidding.

Couldn't say nicer things about both the products and service.
Thanks from us all,

I think that Bergen has not come out with a CCPM heli as they have spent considerable time developing a pure control system with no interaction. Why would they want to go to system that has interaction?

Agreed,

The control system is one of the best and had been copied by others.

Ya, the best selling machine on the market is almost a direct copy of the Bergen. In fact they bought one of Bergens 46s for a referrence for the design.

GMPheli hit it on the nose. I really don't think we want to get into that here again. There are plenty of discussions about the pros and cons of CCMP and mechanical mixing

I think Taya said it best. CCPM is for designers who can't design a clean system.

A little history..................

I think you guys would be intereted to know that Peter Chao, owner of Century Helicopter Products is the designer of the Bergen Intrepid. If I'm not mistaken the original drawings still belong to Century.

So, for you Taya fans just remember that he didn't mimick the Bergen design but rather a Century design! My question to Century is when are you guys gonna put that on your helis????????

Lift,

You could not be more wrong. This is not Peters design. Larry Bergen did this the hard way trail and error. I should know because I was there. Your comment should get the pot going.

Oh boy, this could get ugly...........

RappyTappy,
I don't want to muck up your thread so I'll send my response to Nathan off-line. No doubt about it from what I have seen the Intrepid is indeed a great design!

Nathan,
Sending you a PM now.

Gary Wright helped Larry a lot on the control system.

Control design

Before this gets ugly, I'll interject here a little bit.

The original Intrepid design was a collaboration between my Father and Peter Chao. What you see today is a further refinement from that original design. It would be nice to say that one person gets the credit for what is the best, most interaction free, non ccpm control system, but that is not at all possible.

Some (not all) of the persons responsible, would include my brother, Mike Bergen, Rich Atkinson, Gary Wright, and yes, even Curtis Youngblood added a suggestion or two.

As with most anything, ideas and suggestions are added over time, and though some don't believe we listen to their suggestions, they are always noted, and if the time comes to incorporate that change, then I am always happy to give credit where credit is due.

Just wanted to head off a flame war over something silly, and maybe add a little history for everyone.

I agree with MR. "PIMP" Chris bergen.

I have flown Intrepid and I must say they fly very well, and it has some of the BEST machining in the market.

The service you get from Larry, Chris, and Deb is great! . They are down to earth people that care and listen to your comments, problems, and suggestions. WE need more manufacturers in this hobby that are like this. I can only think of 1 (starts with a X and ends with a L)

Bergen makes a good product and will back it 100% and will be there to listen, give advice, and help anyway they can. Now that is something the consumer should take in consideration when purchasing a helicopter. PRODUCT SUPPORT goes a long way in this hobby and that is what you got with BERGEN.

My 1.5 cents

Bergen Helis

Malorie,
You haven't spoken in a while! I heard from Chris yesterday that "you"
have come up with a "new" canopy design for the Intrepid that is "awsome", so, is there any hope of getting a sneak preview of the canopy to come?
Thanks,
Keith

Chris!!!!

Oh what the heck....

OK, the word is out.
I have the plug built and am finishing it now. Should have the molds built in a couple of weeks. The first canopies should be in test by the end of the month.

Sorry Chris but you let it out first.
