Crashed my Freya!

Today, my Freya went doowwwwwn My crash was caused by the rudder pushrod link leaving the pushrod, on the servo side. When I realized I had lost all rudder control, I hit throttle hold which helped minimize the damage I am sure, but didn't really help me land it correctly. VBlades are toast, as well as a head link, and my Mr. Carbon vertical tail fin. Other than that, though, there is no other obvious damage, so I guess I lucked out. Tailboom is untouched, so are tail blades. I haven't given it a good look yet so I'll probably find some other things (like main mast/spindle) but so far it looks pretty good.

You can view all of my crash pics here, in painful amounts of detail You can also click the ones below...

[BREAK]Here's what my Freya looks like now...:

And here is the cause of the crash....:

Dan, I can see that that is not a hirobo link on your TR servo. That's a famous aftermarket link that's known to be softer than a lot of other link brands isn't it?
Sucks the way the threads pulled out of it. I'd say good job on saving what you did on the heli.

The link is a Rocket City link that comes with the Mr. Carbon stuff.. it came out because I didn't have it screwed in enough.

Sorry dude. No crash is good but some are worse than others.

That's what I thought on the brand link but I didn't think is was short threaded.

I usually screw my TR links all the way in and use the servo bracket to slide adjust, along the boom, the TR for neutral hovering.

Yeah, that's what I'm going to do when I get it back in the air... going to put those things on all the way.

Thanks, Chris Upside is I get to sleep late tomorrow, since I can't go to the field! I expect the total repair cost to be $150 or less

Y'know, this is also the first time I've ever crashed a Hirobo machine... and the failure was an aftermarket non-hirobo part Never crashed my Sceadu either... its been a year since my last crash, which was on a Baron.. guess i was due!

Dan,

Two words....crazy glue...

Once I have that pushrod to length, I glue the inserts in...use jbweld on the stock hirobo pushrod, a little CA on the Xspecs carbon rod...

That sucks man....

never seen one just back out like that though...

Yeah.. as soon as I get it flying, I am going to move the rudder servo mount out a lot so I can screw both the links on a lot. Then once I get the link setup right mechanically I will probably glue it. Sometimes I change tail blades and I've noticed that changes how much pitch it needs to hold, and thus the mechanical setup, but I guess you could always just unscrew the links again... I'll just use a little CA for this reason. I never had the rocket city links back off the Mr. Carbon rod I had on my Sceadu, either, but they were screwed on more.

I'm going to go over the whole ship tomorrow, and make a list of all the part numbers I need along with expected costs, I'll post it here for anyone who is interested I don't have my own helicopter-specific web page (I do have a homepage though) or I'd just put it there

Good save Dan,

My brother had a tail rotor gear failure in his Fury losing all tail control and it did not fare as well as your Freya.

Man, I feel responsible for this. I brought Dan his fuel and this is what it brought him to. A crash. :eek It's all my fault. Na, just kidding. Looks like you'll be up in the air in no time. Take care.

Metal Threads

It could be just the picture, but the metal threads don't look that good. The ones near the end look o.k. but as they progress toward to carbon fiber rod they look rounded off.

You might want to check them also. Just a thought.

John,

Thanks for the suggestion. What you are seeing is sort of an optical illusion created by exhaust greese all over the threads. The threads themselves are fine.

You most probably have slightly bent spindle and mainshaft, I,ve found that an impact hard enought to break blades almost always will bend the shafts even if it is not noticable without taking them out.

Thank you both for the suggestions. I just finished ripping apart the damage on my Freya and have a list of all the stuff I need to get now.. the spindle was tweaked (a very tiny bit) so I am replacing that, and even though I couldn't see any damage to the main mast with my eye, I'm going to replace it anyway. I am also replacing the tail shaft & spindle because a couple of weeks ago I did a bad auto where the tail rotor ate some dirt and it has been making sort of a very, very faint strange sound since then, so I'm going to replace it to see if it goes away.. here are the parts/prices:

0414-164: "tail housing" (tail spindle) $9.89
0414-144: tail shaft w/ pulley $15.99
0404-711: flybar $13.99
2524-001: M2 hirobo link ends $4.69
0414-102: spindle $8.99
0414-101: yoke $10.89
2539-020: button bolt M4x14 $3.99
0414-103: spindle holder $8.99
0414-111: main mast $13.59
Mr. Carbon fins - $30. Wish I could buy just the tail fin as that's all I need.

Total: $121.01.
Total directly related to this crash: $95.13

(costs not including blades)

Looks like a typical crash list....

I'd re-use the old yoke..... I just dremelled off the built-in stop button and it's been working a-ok for 6 months already.

As for the fins... I use G10 material for that... keeps the tail rotors off the ground during mis-timed autos... or the MA fins used on the Fury also works very well and is a direct bolt on.

I uh, rather like having my head button intact.. it comes in handy when I want to stop the blades The reason I'm replacing the yoke is because the head button is chopped up now.
