and bought myself a Knight 50 metal version from my LHS (thanks Jared!). So far, I am really impressed with the kit (except the photocopied instructions) and think that I am really going to like it. I hope to have it up and running this weekend. I'll post some pictures of the build process tonight.

Congratulations!

You will really like it. Very well made and very easy to assemble. It flies beautifully too.

You might look here:

if you haven't already. I used this page from Ade Law to guide me in set up.

This page from the manufacturer is also very useful:

yes its really easy to build its just the fine tuning and fixing of the problems. The only thing i advise IS GETTING THE NEW THREADED FAN!. My fan slipped on sunday and it was the nonthreaded one here are some pics

Ok, started the build last night actually and got the skids on and the engine assembly ready to go into the heli. Here are some pics.

No real issues here. The engine assembly slides right up into the clutch bell and alignment was dead on when inserted.

I had the chance to fly Buzz's (Magnum Fuels) sport version at the OKC Heli Fun Fly a couple of weeks ago and was impressed enough to carry them in my store. Mine will be here tomorrow and hope to have it ready for Scott Glasgows fun fly this weekend. I opted for the all metal with the metal tail also. I think it is probably more bling than anything, as the sport (read plastic frame/head) performed amazingly well, but I'll keep you informed. Those of you who know me, know that I prefer larger helis, but I HAD to make and exception for this one! This is an excellent value and a much better machine than most 50's I've flown (Evo 50 excluded)and has very similar manners to the larger 60-90 class birds. Thanks for the kudos Derek533!

Tonight, I got the servo tray installed, as well as the tail boom, tail assembly, rudder servo mount, and flybar. The tail boom and tail assembly were very easy to install. In fact, the tail assembly came completey ready to install less the blades. Just slide it on the boom, pull the belt through, line everything up and tighten the frame down around it. No surprises yet, except for the fact that the kit was missing about 8 3X20 socket head screws. Nothing that Ace Hardware couldn't fix (they have everything it seems). Here are some more pictures after tonight's assembly. All I have left to do is install the servos, line everything up and get all the tightness out of my linkages.

Not a word about my messy workbench people!

Nice looking heli, and glad to see you took the plunge. I flew my Knight 50 plastic version for the first time over the weekend and it really flew well. On its first flight I felt comfortable enought with it to do everything that I normally do with my Stratus. On the 2nd and 3rd flights I was trying my best to kill the machine but it just shrugged it off and asked for more... I have a lot more testing to do but my initial impression is that this is my ultimate worry free fun helicopter.

I agree with smallscalepilot. I am not sure what it is but the machine feels more like a 90 size heli than any other 50 I have flown. I have flown R50's for years and have never had one feel as nice as my Knight 50 sport felt on it first few flights last weekend!!! I have also had the Hirobo 50's and they were really nice but the CCPM on the Knight gives it unmatched collective pop, and I would venture to say that Evo weighs almost half a pound more than a ready to go Knight Sport. I like Hirobo 50's but to be honest you could almost buy two Knight sports for the price of an Evo...

I sure hope some other pilots take the time to reasearch out this bird and give it a shot. For the price its an unreal value and if setup properly it flys damn good!!! I really like this 50!!!

Did some more assembling last night. Now I am down to the smaller stuff. I got all the servos installed. One thing to note, is that the instructions aren't very clear, but you must use the self tapping screws included with the kit and not the screws that come with the servos. I realized this after I had installed the three ccpm servos in the tray. I also installed a header tank and disassembled the main tank and inspected the clunk line and clunk to check for proper length.

One thing that I am pretty impressed with, is that the ARF quality of this kit seems to be really high. The only thing that was not done at the factory that I have had to do so far is grease the thrust bearings and loctite the spindle. One simple mod that I did after suggested by smallscalepilot, was to make the washer for the spindle bolt a little bigger. This allows less surface of the thrust bearing to exposed to the outside and should also alleviate any premature deterioration of the bearing.

All I am down to now, is applying the decals to the canopy, installing the switch, receiver and li-ion setup, and getting my curves setup and proper phasing. This is my first ccpm setup so it may take me a little longer to get everything working properly but we'll see. When I put the bell cranks at 90 degrees, the linkages that were preinstalled from the factory actually look like they are going to be really close to where I need them. I'll post some pics tonight after applying the decals and getting the electronics installed.

One question, what switch are you guys running? The switch cutout on the receiver tray looks to be pretty large.

Derek,

I agree with you-the ARF quality is very good! I took some things loose to check them and they definitely used thread lock on them (except for the spindle, as you pointed out).

I am running the stock JR switch. Oddly enough, the switch mount hole on the tray was too small for the JR switch. My switch and charge jack are mounted to the side of the canopy.

Also, I keep reading about people having their batteries fly out in flight (not on Knights, but in general). I made a slot in the tray behind the battery and reciever so that I can velcro them in both side to side and front to back. This may be overkill, but I did not think it would hurt.

The CCPM set up will go pretty quick. It only took me a couple of hours and I am very slow!

Enjoy your new machine!

Funny you should mention the switch issue. I tried to install my Cermark HD switch and the holes are too close together. I was thinking it may be the Cermark template but I guess it is too small for all switches.

Hey madman, you won't be disappointed at all. Here it is on Sunday, 58 degrees, zero wind and I am talking to you guys. I hope to maiden it later this afternoon as soon as I get my cyclic pitch set.

I notice you're in Alexandria. I spent two freaking months at the Clarion on Macarthur last year as a result of Rita (heavy loss adjuster). Beautiful country down there and especially eastward in Pineville on out towards Monterey and Jonesville.

from what i can see the build quality is first rate and with all metal head design i can see why this is causing a stir. i wonder does anyone have a vid of the bird doing some flight?

how far away can it get? oh that far huh?

Well, I maidened my Knight. The flight lasted a whole 10 seconds before I set it back down. My swash settings are way off and I believe I have a range issue as well.

This is my first CCPM to setup and it is quite a bit more difficult getting everthing set right. I have two questions for you guys.

1. How did you all route your rx antenna?
2. How much cyclic pitch are you guys getting?

Thanks

Oh btw, even though the flight duration was short, I can definitely tell a huge difference between this bird and my old Caliber 5. This thing is soooo much smoother. I am really going to like it if I can get the darn thing setup properly.
