Well,
For those who have never seen CNC, its sweet.
Even for me, I think it's cool.
Nothing beats drawing a part in CAD, running it through a CAM program, running the file, and watching a part appear before your very eyes.
I am self taught.
I find it to be a challenge to get the paths optimized.
I can't imagine what it was like before CAM.
I have not made a dime with my CNC router and I've poured over 13k into it because I LOVE it.

Man that is a sweet machine. I didn't realize that Emco made full size machines like that. Now if it could machine stainless that fast I would be even more impressed. Just got to love those multi axis turning centers. Now if my lottery numbers would just come in I could order one of those beasts. HEHE

I always love watching CNC machines work when I get a chance. Just fascinates me. Would like to get more into CNC machining myself.

full size machine

This is a machine.. 9 axes, automatic change of milling head, ATC of 80 tools, fast travel \ rappid move at 32000mm\min.. 8000mm travel in X, 1500mm in Y, 2000mm in Z, it is sweet.. but not for making heli parts in.. fore that my shoop got an tiny 4 axes mill..

Stay tuned fore more happy days

Hex Flats

Does anyone know the trick to machining the hex flats on the part
with the spindle still running.

high speed synchronization of the lathe to a rotating hex shaped cutter. It was a pretty immpressive trick but the final part looked a bit useless.

It's called polygon turning. We use it to generate hexs on parts at a high rate of speed that would take to long to mill in a conventional manner. In addition, polygon turning can be used to hob splines or involute gears while the part is in the lathe.

Is that an add on option?
What type of cutter would you use?
If you do that type of machining would it be possible to get a short sample program?

Thanks,

Yes, this is a software option.

The cutter would basically look similar to a fly cutter.

We rarely do polygon turning and it really depends on the control that you do it on. Fanuc code is a little different than Siemens code.

On our machine we just draw the picture and it selects the tooling and writes the code. But it just does turning work and we don't have live tooling. But I would love to have it.
