Women Pilots > 1st heli for Wife?

I've been flying an Eco-8 for a while, and the wife
actually has been showing a bit of interest in flying herself.

When I offer to teach her on the Eco she says she just doesn't wanna crash 'my' heli ( I do that enough already haha), so i'm thinking of getting some kind of nice beginner kit for her to start flying. It should be decent quality, not too pricey and cheap to repair.

I ran across this one (Blade CP Pro RTF):

Would this be a good starter kit?

The Blade CP is a little squirrely for a first timer. A cheap "first-timer" helicopter is the DragonFly Mini. It is fixed pitch, and comes with everything that you (she) will need. This is a VERY durable machine! They a cheaper than the Blade CP, and hold up much better to the major "BOO-BOO" that always occurs. They are very stable, which is very good for a beginner.

Just tell her it is a training helicopter!

i agree get the blade cx. even you with more flight time will have fun flying it. flies great indoors. i challenge myself to land on extrmely hard things and do it. i was at my friends house the other night and we set up obstacles to fly under and over and see who could do it the fastest. hehe

+1 more for the CX. flew one in a store for demo once and convinced 2 people to buy one and the owner to poo himself when I said I didnt have a heli of my own.

picco z is a good flying toy but will not teach you much.

I have to vote for a Blade Pro with flat blades. They're not that hard to fly and they're cheap to repair. Plus, it will grow with her skills.

Hi all,

I would go with the CX. My hubby has show an interest, recently. I'm getting him a CX for Christmas to get into the hobby.

I have a nine bird fleet running from humminbird fp's to trex's (soon a 600). So when he graduates from the CX he can move to the HB FP. At least that's my cunning plan

Cheers,
Leslie

I agree, the CP is a squirrel, the CX is a good starter.
However, if you can fly the CP, larger helis are a breeze.

I would recommend starting with the CX. She will have a ball with it right from the start and will be flying all over very quickly. Don't be surprised, though, if she wants to upgrade quickly. I started with a CX and recently moved up to a Trex. Love 'em both! Best of luck to you and your wife--hope to see her in here eventually.

Happy flying!

I fly well enough to know what im saying. STAY AWAY FROM BLADE if your a begginer. Go with a 30 bird. Much longer flight times for learning. Easier to see. MUCH MUCH easier to control less effected by winds etc. Rappy 30 .. even better sceadu 30.. If money isnt an issue get a 50. just tune it down a bit as most people grow out of 30`s pretty fast.

Although I respect your flying experience, I disagree with your opinion that the Blade is not a good beginner's helicopter.

I am a female fixed wing RC pilot and a budding RC helicopter pilot. The Blade CX was my first helicopter--it was cost-effective enough that I wasn't worried about crashing it, yet the controls work the same as the bigger machines so it let me see if I really liked flying helicopters before investing in a pricier machine (um...I did like it, by the way).

I usually got in about 10 minutes per flight, which was about all I wanted at the beginning. It was VERY beginner-friendly. I had NO difficulty seeing it--it is BRIGHT YELLOW! Extra batteries and parts are very inexpensive. The true beauty of this little machine (for me) was that I could fly it right in the house. In the evening, when my husband and I were watching television, I would fly during the commercials. I think I got in more flying time that way than I would have with a bigger heli that had to fly outside. I had a blast practicing my landings on the coffee table and doing figure-8s in the living room. The entire time I flew it, the only parts we ever needed to buy were extra blades & batteries. I did bend the flybar a few times, but simply bent it back into position.

The Blade CX was less intimidating to me than a Trex or larger heli would have been at the time. I did eventually upgrade to a Trex because I wanted to fly outdoors and at the flying field. By that time, I had confidence in managing helicopter controls and it made the transition MUCH easier.

I think the decision of what to buy depends on the indivual who will be flying the helicopter. Her level of confidence in herself should be a factor, as should her personal prefernces regarding size & level of difficulty. Some women like to dive right in, and others prefer to dip their toes in first.

Happy Flying!

Blade CX gets my vote, Blade CP Pro if you don't want
her to stay in the hobby long It's asking allot for
someone with one experience and it can get frustrating
fast! The CX is very forgiving and will teach her orientation!

If you choose a CP get one off ebay, lots there for sale from
people who thought it would be a good first heli

ok

I have a blade myself too. a sceadu.. trex etc.. but i really find the blade hard to handle.. And once you start FF you need a better bird.. I dont know just my 2 cents.. i think maybe a trex would be good too.. the xl version. stay away from the se if your beginer.. very $$ to crash.. serious tho. a rappy 30.. but blade cp has real low costs.

Just out of curiosity, what is considered an expensive crash? I have crashed my Trex (SE) twice (not counting one hard landing). The first time it went in, there was no damage at all and she went in from rooftop height. I think I was just extraordinarily lucky that time. The second time, I had a blade strike and it cost me a feathering shaft, main shaft, and a set of blades--less than $30 AND included in that price were the extra three feathering shafts & two main shafts that came in the bags I bought. I didn't think it was too bad, but I don't know how that compares to other versions of the Trex. I believe I would have broken more stuff on it if it were an XL instead of an SE, but who knows? I'm a newbie and could be way off base.

Happy Flying!

well it would be more to fix an se. and holy crap it is not that expensive eh. i just got a trex se today.. i think align are gonna take over if they play their catrds right. at least in electrics.. The thing is is that witht he trex.. you wanna mount your gyro below.. not up top behind the mast.. its incredible how far down the flybar will go.. almost brushes the gyro.. if you paddle steike that.. thats.. 69 dolars. new blades.. carbon etc.. i guess it all depends on the speed on impact Im loving this new heli though. So smooth i think align did a fantastic job. However if i could complain.. whats with these blades.. my blade cp has wider blades.. im running almost 11+ and neg and no bogging.. NEED MORE LIFT!

Best way to begin for me.

Trex Xl
Sceadu 50 swm
Hirobo 90 .. one day.. one day i will have..

Best of luck buying that heli for your wife, my gf just started flying. They say that although women may not be the best pilots, we should be worried as they are the BEST learners
