Are the haas Machines god for this? what cutting tool do you recommend?

Thanks….

I use about 21,000rpm with a 1.60mm carbide fishtail router bit for cutting 2mm carbon plate.

How many rpm's do you have? How true can you hold the tool? How tightly can you hold the tool and the part?

Haas machines aren't any different than anything else that cuts metal. They cut CF too.

You can cut CF at 4K but it limits your feedrate.

i have cut .125 cf,full slot,.065 axial d.o.c.,25ipm feed, 4flute,.187 dia carbide, with coolant on my vf3 at 5000 rpm. never changed any thing cause i was only making 2 sets of side frames for my trex (see my gallery). these settings would be a starting point. keep crankin in more feed and rpm until the bit snaps then back it off a turn or two

What abut the carbon powder residuums??

When I was buying the Haas machines, they told me that I need some special seals to protect the lineal bearings and the ball screws if I wanted to work whit CF.

What do you think of this???

I hope you understand my English..

Thanks…

i was using a metal cutting coolant/water mix at low pressure to eliminate the dust and keep the epoxy resin cool because it was already in the machine. if i had to do more i'd probably use straight water. i had little to no delamination but i was using a mechanically compacted laminate.i theorize that with the lower rpm (compared to 20,000+ rpm for a router) the chip load (term as it applies to metal cutting) is much higher creating more heat, requiring coolant. a routers "chip load" would be much smaller, hence less heat.your english is fine

The only reason that the dudes @ Haas said to cover the balls screws and guides is because if you were machining something like Poco C3 graphite electrode material that sh*t goes everywhere, including the control cabinet.

CF plate can be cut with little effort and you just need a decent vacuum system to keep the dust out of the spindle bearings and the LM guides. If you did this for a living it would be different but occasional cutting of CF is not much of an issue. If you were cutting CF or Poco on a daily basis for extended periods I would worry.

I cut carbon fiber for a living.
19-20,000 rpm
Carbide or diamond burr bit
feed at .4"/sec
max depth per pass .1"
This will leave you a very smooth, burr free edge. I prefer to use a .120" dia bit. As for the dust, it is very hazardous. Remember the dust is a fine particulate like talcum powder so it must be vacuumed with a good vacuum. All of our dust is sucked up via a vacuum that surrounds the bit. If you have any other questions just let me know. If you need anything cut than visit outfrontframes.com or shoot me an email and let me know your from RunRyder and I'll give ya a good deal. email: wesbrown@outfrontframes.com
