Looks good Tim. Now, before you do anything else, install the four door slide supports on the fuse by epoxing and screwing them to the fuse. The instructions show you just gluing them, but if you use micro screws from inside the fuse into the supports, they will never move again.

Thank You Joe! -- the instructions are only exploded views -- no steps, no recommendations for adhesives or much of anything else! Good thing I only use pictures though!!

sound proofing, wood to fibreglass... what epoxy?

Nice Job Doc.. a few questions for you doc.
What type of epoxy you are using to glue the woodwork to fibreglass fuselage to ensure for strength? I was thinking of 30 minutes epoxy with fibreglass clothes. What material do you use to keep the noise down?.. I know vario sells the foam padding to install inside the fuse.. is there any other alternative material or method to keep the noise down? Thanks

Hi Naomi, I use West Coast Systems Epoxy resin with 2 inch wide Cloth. -- Works Great except it takes a while to set up (About an Hour) 30 Minute would also work just make sure to sand the fiberglass with 60 grit!! Also before you start make sure to give the Fiberglass body a Bubble Bath!! It gets the Mold Release Off-- Scrub with one of those Dish sponge scrubber thingys. Mouse Pads work great for sound proofing, I also use perforated Foam Rubber like the stuff that comes in those Fancy Transmitter Cases.

Thanks Doc, good idea I think I will give my wolf with a little bit of the TLC bubble bath.. , 60 Grits of Sandpaper inside before woodwork and 2 inch strip fibreglass clothes with 30minutes epoxy, and perforated foam for sound proofing.( I think mouse pads would be too heavy) . Thanks doc. got the prescription..

Putting the wood in with GOOP or PFM eliminates the need for cloth of any kind and the scuffing doesn't have to be so radical. In fact, if you thoroughly clean the inside of the surface with acetone or gently with lacquer thinner, you can apply GOOP right to it w/out scuffing and it will stay just fine(but I'd scuff it anyway). It has the added bonus of being removable if you need. Simply cut it with a new Xacto blade OR dental floss. AND...using this type of adhesive will give you the added benefit of isolating a lot of vibration from the fiberglass body and keeping it in the wood where it can be better attenuated. It isn't as heavy as using resin and cloth, either. This glue dries in about half an hour, is very thick so it stays where you put it, and makes great fillets with very little effort.
GOOP is readily available at most hardware and automotive stores, PFM is an Innovative Model Products item.
I haven't used anythingn BUT these two products for installing wood for about 10 years now, haven't had the first sign of trouble with it and I'm convinced it helps the body last longer by isolating the vibes.

Photo's Please ScaleOne

Could you post some photo's of your installations, I have used PFM for years but only for servos in tight Sailplane Wings! I never considered it for Wood to Fiberglass installs but, I will take a look at it and make some Test pieces. I have to feel confident that it will not let go after some time!! Hate to loose a $5000 heli because the woodwork let go! But, You might be on to something. My Airwolf weighs in at 20 lbs. I would hate to see the Mechanics fly out mid-flight because the PFM decided to come loose. I would love to see pictures of your Older ships that were put together with this method. Thank You,
Dr.Tim

I second that motion.. there are a lots of stress and support between wood and fibreglass.
Dr. Tim, How do you get access to your nose gear servo in the event if you have to replace the servo on the airwolf. I know yours is the big one thus gives you a bit of room to remove the servo for maintenace or replacement mine is smaller .. Do I just keep one of the lower front side windows accessible when need. Thanks

I use GOOP in my wood installs also. When the tail rotor belt broke on my CHP Long Ranger and it crashed, the wood was still firmly attached to the fuselage. In fact, the plywood delaminated and ripped in half in spots, yet the base was still firmly stuck down. That made me a believer in the GOOP method. I used it in my Vario Petrol Jet Ranger, and will use it in my next project A-Star too....

It's easy and eliminates a big smelly mess!

Trust Jerry, he knoweth what he speaketh!

I tack the chassis in place with some rapid CA and then spread PFM all around the joint. I have never had PFM give way on me, in fact sometimes it can be darn hard to shift when you dont want it.

I do all of the wood/fiberglass joints this way. I expect the CA to break eventually and the PFM to take over

GOOP

I think I will try the GOOP on my 500E. I haven't glued everything in yet. After looking at Peter Wales site and his scale ablilties and what he and Jerry says about the GOOP has sold me 110% on the stuff, gotta get me some of the GOOP.

I've never heard of PFM, unless you count the generic acyronym

Could I find PFM locally (Dallas/Ft. Worth) or is it special order only? I assume it is basically the same as GOOP? Is one better than the other?

Dr. Tim,

That heli is looking good! Can I ask what paint scheme you will use?

Thanks,

Raymond
