Will the Aurora have a 5mm flybar?

Thanks,

Jeff

I believe it's 4mm.

The flybar is 4mm diameter.
I have had several people ask me why we didn't go with a larger diameter flybar and there is actually a reason for it.

Most people that asked had a concern about flybars breaking in other helis where in order to solve the breakage problem the manufacturers went with the brute approach of beefing up some structure around the flybar or increasing its diameter to reduce the possibility of a breakage. There is an inherent problem with those approachs because they both increase the weight of the gyroscope that the flybar is when rotating at high speed. In other words making it larger diameter or adding a structure around it is like adding flybar weights to the flybar but with the problem that you can't take them off anymore.

This approach would have limited the maximum agility of the head and therefore would compromise the mobility range that we wanted to have. We instead went in a different route. We decided to select a different material for the flybar that would not only increase its strength but also stay in the same low weight so that the agility range is not compromised.

We tested almost all the brands of flybars and found that almost every single one were made out of the same material. This material has a yield strength of about 30,000 psi which is borderline adequate for the stress levels we are currently throwing at them with todays flying styles hence the current flybar breakages that are common in many machines nowadays.

We knew we needed to select a material that would have several times the safety factor that would allow us to stay withing the 4mm diameter range to keep the mobility range. To do that we knew we needed to use alloys that contained Niobium and Tantalum but were concerned about the high cost of the raw material and de difficulty of the machining. We thought long annd hard but we finally decided to go for the right material that would give us the safety factor we were looking for. The alloy we selected has a yield strength of 197,000 psi yet it kept a similar modulus of elasticity so the flight behavior would not be changed.

There are certain decisions that are made from an economical point of view and some are made based one performance and safety. This one is one of those where safety had absolute precedence.

Augusto.

Weelll, yes. I have a Synergy and don't know if I want to take the time to work through the issues it has.

Just have to see how it goes.

I thought maybe,

Hey Jeff,
I figured you were looking towards the Synergy. You can't get rid of it until you let me fly it
I'm in the middle of asking myself the question of Synergy or Aurora or Avant.

You going to Brooks?

See ya, Alan

Alan,

I hope to make to Brooks. Right now my schedule is such that I will make it but things have been changing so much at work that you never know.

If I do make it down and if I still have it you can fly it.

Alan,
I think Doc is still planning on doing the "demo" flights.

I was wanting to take one for a spin just to see what all the hype is about.

I got the second expansion pack for G3 and I was so impressed with the Aurora that I asked Augusto if it was "close"

He said that Danny, Alan and himself all thought the model and the sim were pretty close.

If that is the case I WANT ONE.

Sweet,

:Cool Jeff,

I appreciate you letting me fly your heli.

Jason,
I did the buddy box bit in Snohomish, the heli was detuned a bit and I only had about 1.5 minutes of exposure. I appriciate that Doc was willing to put his heli and time on the line but it realy wasn't a well set up Synergy. +9-9 isn't exactly what most are running on the things. I understand why Doc set up the buddybox the way he did I would just like to fly one that is AC/DC type rocking instead of Airsupply.

Sorry I've been drinking

Didn't know that....
Jeff's is certainly "Rocking" at least it was a few weekends ago.
Now if mine were only running half that good.

ok out of intrest what is the fly bar made of as the two meatal you talk of are quite soft on there own and are in the same groupe of metals as titaium accepted that when alloyed could be very strong
also Tantalum can be hard to get hold off could this cause supply probs ?
