Safety - RC Helis are not toys > RC Airplane brings down Paraglider

"A paraglider was flying along above Utah last Friday, about 75 feet high, when he encountered an airplane at his altitude ... which quickly became an unpleasant surprise. The remote-controlled airplane, with a 21-inch wingspan, dispensed enough force to disrupt the parafoil. The paraglider pilot, Wade Hutchinson, 31, of Wyoming, crashed on the side of a slope, but was spared serious injury. "That mountain helped break his fall," local police officer Clint Fackrell told the Salt Lake Tribune, referring to the angle of the terrain. The glider "folded up" on impact, according to the Tribune (not much of a surprise considering paraglider wings have no solid structural members). Hutchinson was flown to a hospital by helicopter, but his injuries were reported to be not life-threatening. Police said they don't plan to file any charges against the pilot of the radio-controlled airplane."

Direct statement of what happened by the club president of the club involved.

Much different story than the news media of course.

Sounds like a bad place for both to be flying at the same time.

I haven't heard a story like that before.. Very interesting.

Good to know that it all turned out alright in the end.

I don't think there'll be any backlash. RC flying, at least planks, is very poopoolar here in Utah.

Shiny. Let's be bad guys.

Some of those paraglider pilots are just idiots.

When I first moved to Nevada, I was doing the high power rocket thing. We would launch at El Dorado drylake in Boulder City. I can't tell you how many times different paraglider pilots would fly over from their launching area (a commercial venture, IIRC) to watch the rockets launch.

Holy crap, how stupid! Even my relatively small 4", five pound rocket could easily fold a canopy if it landed in the middle of it. Heck, the deployed length of thing was 16' or so when it was hanging from the parachute due to the length of shock cord. People out there flew much, much larger rockets than that!

I've run into the same thing when attending HPR launches. I regularly launch at Bong Recreation Area, a state park in SE Wisconsin. Every so often we would have airplanes circling overhead to get a good look of the rockets not realizing that we won't launch until they're clear. Once we had a biplane doing aerobatics right over our heads for half an hour!

I would have been tempted to fire at the idiots

We had a full size chopper come to the club and land because if was a funfly. We all had to stop flying but the ones that were in the hover square (not allowed above 10 meters) were allowed to carry on, not that many did mind you.
