When the Auto goes bad how many switches can you hit before the heli hits the ground.

This was a close one! today.

Practicing inverted auto's in high wind for this area 10-15 gusting.

Tumbled out and did not add enough positive collective. Zapped
my rpm (big time) ok no problem i will power out

#1 caught me by surprise- The others were fine! what happened?

# 2 where is the switch to turn off throttle hold? I have hit at least
three or four. Did my engine quit?

#3 May day tower declaring an emergency!

#4 Found the switch! inches off the ground-Back in idle up, Tail rotor
can't handle the instant torque!

#5 Piroetting like wild! Keep the disk level- land and go to the restroom!

I think what happened was possible low level wind shear or wake turbulence because the airport is close.

ooops

Forgot to put the little servo arm screw back into the rudder servo after adjusting the ball location. went flying, went crashing.

Found a glitch in Hitec Eclipse transmitter. With pitch or throttle curve top end set to 100%, full up stick drives throttle/ collective servo into full reverse. Notice it first on throttle, everytime I'd punch it, the throttle would roll back to idle. Set throttle curve to 99%, problem went away. week later, reset pitch curves and linkages, forgot about the 100% thing, this time on collective. Nothing like seeing a heli start to up when you punch it, and immediately go down. It happened so fast I actually missed it hitting. My eyes were still going up, and I was only 6 feet from it. No injuries. Radio went back after that. Where bashed nexus comes from. Still bashed.

I had purchased my first GMP Legend and opted for the flybar-less head. GMP had been touting it as a piece of cake and to watch Robert Gorham fly his had me sold.

So I got the legend together and spent a couple of weeks dialing it in hovering around and tried some simple forward flight. It few VERY well. I began to wonder what the flybar and paddles were doing anyway.

Well one Saturday morning I met the "gang" (all 3 of our other heli flyers) out at the field. Did the morning chit-chat and coffee then got down to business to get ready to fly.

My buddy few first. Then it was my turn. I hovered a bit, adjusted mixture. etc. Sent the bird out for a couple of figure 8s and things were going well.

We had drawn a small crowd and there were about 10 people (non R/Cers) watching us fly the helis. Well I set the legend down looked around and decided I would punch it and show off a bit.

So I picked it up into a hover then pushed in full collective/throttle and pushed the noise forward. I had done this MANY MANY times with my shuttle and had no problems. Well the Legend took off like a shot and then all of a sudden the nose dropped violently and before I could do anything about it my legend had created about a 6 inch hole in the ground.

I stood there wondering what the hell happened.

I found out later... Much later that the flybar-less head on the legend had a nasty habit of violent nose drops when large collective changes were made.

Well needless to say I went back to the flybar head.

Started the heli without turning on the power. I was new at the time and didn't know what to do. Just sat there and stared at it for 30 seconds before I finally decided to turn it on.

Went flying with the guys one Saturday and had a great day. Flew 2 or 3 tanks and was watching the guys and decided to fuel up and get ready for tank number 4. Turned the power on hooked up the glow driver and grabbed the starter and put it in the hex and looked up and noticed Keith was fired up and walking tward the field so I decided to wait. Shut everything off and sat down to watch him fly. For some reason I decided to check my heli out since I was waiting. I reached down and unlatched the canopy and low and behold the battery drops to the ground. The rubber band holding it in had broken and the battery had wiggled its way out of the tray. Had Keith not decided to fly at that particular moment....well you do the math. Thanks Keith

WHERE IS VETRIDER

I was reading through all of these dumb thumbs and can say I have never had a crash thanks to MisterOught. He was always there to grab my radio before it happened or I was on the buddy cord with Coptor Doctor. I know I have seen Nolen Dumb Thumb 2 helis in one day. Oh yeah I remember it was his birthday. I will be back in LA in May, hope to see the wiregrass crew then.

Instead of connecting the battery wire on my logo 20 to the motor I plugged it into the other battery, or i tried to, god I think you could arc weld with em.

Done it twice now

I've got a stupid one

Yesterday went out in a totaly lousy weather day but i wanted to test my new 401/9253 in my xcell, Got to field with one planker there, and guess what he's on my freq, no sweat I replace tx mod and rx crystal, fuel up, fire up the 80, head for the pad.

I'm spooling up and find tail reversed, now I swear I had check all this out at home, anyway while the gov just kicked in it was just responding
backwards, the gyro was correct though, no spinning top, just reversed
rudder, OK I go to spool down (still in normal mode), it leaps into the
air, Oh crap, what the *&^% is happening, then it's tilting back towards
me Oh *&** it's really after me, RUNNNNNNNNN, IMPACT, and
big load OH *&^*, what the *&^%.

I had the wrong xcell in radio selected, the only diff in my two xcells is I have futaba digitals in my 80 while my 60 has hitec on cyclic, so
all my cyclics/pitch/tail where reversed, throttle was all that acted
normal.

Now to come up with a way to not let this happen again. Before my
Z pcm10 rx went bad it was easy, the Z and S pcm would not respond to each other.

Luckily only damage was tail where it was cut off, main 70t gear, and
normal boom strike damage, blades, axles, etc.

Ok I have to jump in. When I first started flying on a Century Ninja, I flew EVERY day till the snow ate the machine in the back yard in the dark.... nuff said.

Then a Rap 30 was rebuilt after "one of the normal crashes" LOL and I forgot all the servo horn screws.... First one to let go - throttle. Not too bad as time went on, the throttle slowly went lower and lower and finally I was able to land and get a hand on the button to stop the madness. BUT the really Dumb a%$ part of it was Iooked CLOSELY at everything and only "saw" the throttle problem. Back in the air after a couple of rolls and the aileron servo horn came off.... This one was NOT pretty but I learned what a Chicken Dance was.

Last one - painted the canopy solid blue,,,, took a turn into the setting sun last fall and BAM... kicked it up a notch...

LeRoy, Seems like every time I go out I do something stupid but at least now I'm saving the heli from damage!
Yes, on my birthday last year, April, maiden flight on my new Freya. Less than 60 sec. into the flight I go to do a 540 stall turn and not realizing how fast the Freya will piroette, I over shoot it by 270. Now the heli is only about 50 ft up and falling on it's side. I get the tail inline and do the pull-up and forget to add ANY collective. It hit on the right skid and slid about 40 ft. Didn't even scratch the canopy! Lots of other parts weren't so lucky.
Later that same day I was working on autos on my Sceadu 50, I was too far out and instead of recovering I rode it out and broke the (stock) landing gear. I called it a day after that.

OH .......now I have the most fun helping Kam with his cardio training. He'll run in a sec if you just wobble the heli in his direction.

Birds!

I have heard of people hitting birds.
At our club the Hawks get close, they even dive at some of the Gliders. One member had one dive at his glider and he thought it was close, when he got it down it had talon marks in the wing!
How many have you had hit a bird or seen it happen?

This one occured two years ago with an .049 glider.

One of the guys in our club fired it up and proceeded to launch the glider. All appeared normal until he said some unmentionables and told us he would just be watching this flight as well because he launched it before turning on the receiver.
Well the glider was well balanced because it did slow, banked circled up to about 3 or 400 feet while traveling south.

.....the chase begins.......... 2 cars rapidly left the field to follow the plane

After a minute or two gaining altitude all the time, the plane crossed to a new layer of wind and started to travel ...........north.
The motorcade soon drove by the field as well...........heading north.

A few minutes later they returned........victorious!
The engine quit as the gas ran out and the glider simply spiralled down into a farmers field.
They brought the glider back, refuelled it , turned on the receiver and went for a belated flight.

A couple of years ago I was flipping a heli when the rotor suddenly made a ver odd sound. The heli was in an inverted hover at the time and I soon learned that I had no cyclic control whatsoever. Eventually the heli began to roll onto it's side forcing me to hit throttle hold.

What I learned from this: Do not use vasoline to lubricate servo gears as it makes them very brittle.

Not a crash but a lesson to be learnt. Last week freezing cold had left my helis in the safety of my nice warm house,. went to the flying field anyway, spent some time watching one of the student pilots trying to hover his bird. It was all over the place and the previous week he'd got his training gear off for the first time and was in a nice steady hover, he looked at me with that newbie glazed look and asked if Id sort it out for him. I was to cold to fly and asked another flyer to trim the heli out, he tried to get into a hover but put it down very quick, so the old master (lol) me was called on I got it into a hover there was very little cyclic response, first time Id ever used fullstick deflectionbs just to keep it in the air. Finally splashed it down in a huge puddle. It appears newbie had fitted a new washout base which hed neglected to tighten! And had emphatically denied altering anything before we,d attempted to fly the s.o.b. My fault I suppose for not checking it out before flying, needless to say i'll think twice before I fly any more birds from that particular stable

I forgot to change flight modes from normal to idle 2 and did an outside loop with my Sceadu 50! I watched the blades slow down then cut the tail boom off then the heli fell to the earth like a lawn dart!!! Totaled!!!
