My STUPID'est one is:

I was doing a great approach for a side on auto. I came in, flared nicely. ANNNNND..... I just let it drop and hit the ground.

I FORGOT to put in POSITIVE collective. Duh.

Boom strike- oh, %$#*@$$!

I botch enough autos often as it is, but at least most of the time, I slow down before I hit the ground.

pm

i crashed my concept 30 (going back to 1990). i rebuilt the entire helicopter, thought i had checked everything.

lifted off the ground and it rose into hover, stopped and then gently backed into the ground. apparently, i had not checked the fore-aft cyclic rod and it simply fell out of the ball from wear.

that was an expensive lesson that has resulted in a complete preflight and pm.

my dumbest one to date involved my nexus and a new aileron servo just mounted....
didnt notice it was reversed until I skipped the disc on the pavement.

that same machine was the one where I thought I could make my own torque tube, was interesting to watch the t/r fly off and get a much better piro rate. wasnt able to save it.

A couple weeks ago here in Wichita the weather was really good. Low wind and warm temps. Warm enough the bugs were out. I fly using a transmitter neck strap so I can briefly take my right hand off the transmitter to shoo the bugs away. Well this time I had a big suprise I accidentally knocked my glasses off. Which I caught with my left hand. The first thought is just pure shock. I look out to the heli and all I can see is a white blob about 20 feet off the deck. There was no way I could get my glasses back on in time to save the chopper. The damage was not too bad , blades ,boom and spindle. Next time I will land before I shoo the bugs away. Maybe it was the bugs revenge. Helicat

Suffering from general beginner's jitters, I decided to land my Shuttle ZXX a 'bit on the hard side' from 35 feet away... the Shuttle had a boom strike and exploded resembling a direct hit from AA missile... impressive but I was saddened by the loss of my first heli.

dumb de dum dum dum thumb

oh yeah!!! i've done a bunch "O" dumb thumbs. lets see,
started engine
with throttle on high,
forgot to switch to right heli
i dont know why
make sure you're in stunt
before going upside down
i did that in a 3 ft hover
and felt like a clown
dont forget to exit trim memory
when using a pcm 10
i hit store instead of timer
had to repair that machine again
make sure your scale body
has full fuel every flight
cuz what u cant see will hurt you
especially when money is tight
never take a newbie's word
that his machine is good to go
i look under the canopy
reveals a horror show
learn form mistakes
cuz if it happened then
you can be sure as torque is real
it could happen again

Other Mishaps that I have seen or have been told!

Paul Tradelius-(Basics of rc helicopters book) said that he and a
friend where at a fun fly and a gmp legend went wildly out of control
and was coming to the ground at high velocity. Just before it hit the
deck the helicopter straitened out and was coming at paul and his
friend at high speed. They "hit the deck" and the skid from the helicopter grazed his back before it hit the ground!

I was flying with my good friend (John) and he was doing inverted auto's
he has really mastered them with the exception this time he didn't like the way the helicopter rolled out at the end and decided to repower and
go back up. The engine did not respond as fast as it should and the
helicopter started to spin wildly. The only bad part! (funny part) was
he was in high grass and you could here the tail blades start to hit
the grass. tic tic tic, tic, tic, tic, tic, blamm!!! The engine finally caught
up but the grass had reached out and grabbed his heli. Trying to make
him feel better I said that it was a classic case of low level wind shear!

My other good friend (Kendall) had a brand new x-cell, new servos, gyro, and had a radio problem but sent it off and reinstalled the reciever, static testing fine. He hovered the heli and then had no control.
It flew away and he found it miles away about 5 years later.

I've never seen a heli, fly outta sight, usually they hover uncontrollably with a mind of their own, and hit the ground before long.

I've seen planks fly away when out of control, and continue flying for miles and miles. Worst part is that they are never recovered.
Almost like finding a needle in a haystack ......... as they say!!!!!

This is bad.

I read all the posts and I've probably done most of them. Wouldn't it be great if we could learn from others mistakes, but no, some of us just have to do it ourselves just to be sure that it will crash....

The ones I'vge seen which are now my favourites include

1 Seeing a friend test fly a heli which had a completely different idle up set up to what he was used to and banging it straight into the ground from 3 feet

2 seeing a heli lose its throttle servo on the ground and rather than just letting it run out of fuel, the guy lobs his jacket onto it to at which point the heli eats the jacket, and itself. Cool.

3 The old low level flip into inverted in normal mode. Maybe someone could invent an onboard trip that remapped the flight modes when it sensed it was upside down??

I managed to gently park a Nexus in the top of a Conifer tree when it ran out of fuel. Heli was fine till I tried to get it down. Dropped 30 feet and broke the boom, blades, canopy etc.

Trying to learn inverted flight in bad light with a bit too much wind, with plenty of height for safety...... amazingly I got disorientated when I could n't see it.

Made an adjustment to the tail rotor linkage, having a chat, and not reconnecting it. Awesome pirouette rate.

The following happened a couple of years ago:
I had already packed and loaded and was ready to go.
Then I was called upon to coach a beginner who was taking his Shuttle into its first forward flights...
So I sat into the car to call my wife and let her know I was about to leave the field when an ear-shattering Bang sends me thru the roof - and I see the infamous Shuttle bouncing off the front hood, 1 foot from the windshield.
Arrgh!

2 skid marks in the bent bonnet later, I am calling my wife to tell her that a newbie just crashed into her father's car (Had borrowed his, because mine was still at the mechanics shop).

I have a great father in law, I can tell u that!!!!!!!!!!!

ive got 2

one of my crashes was because my first flight. the runway was open, no one on it. there was only 3 of us there,(it was 8am) the 3rd guy was getting his stuff out of his car. so i gassed up, and took the runway. it was my first flight of the day, probably 42 degrees out, took off into a hover, went into foward flight, did one turn and the engine died. so i had to auto from about 40 feet. it was a nice auto to, flared it right, and everything. just i didnt land on the runway, i landed on dirt. and this dirt was all messed up. it was all turned over by a plow. so it lands, slides a foot, and almost rolls over because of the clumps in the ground. but the blades tap the ground. but it was still right side up. so i went to pick it up, and the back of the blades were cracked. i glued it back together and it was fine. i flew an hour later.

My other crash was because i was showing off. i was at a different feild and was flipping it around. i had no idea why i was doing it. i knew i couldnt. but i kept it up. so i went to do 2 back flips in a row. did the first nicely, second one wasnt so great. i was upside down, still flipping 15 feet off the ground. i was scared ****less so it flipped over, ALMOST right side up, smacked the ground on its side, hit the tail rotor on the ground, went back into a hover!!! Then a guy who was watching says" Hey! you got it, your not going to crash" and i thought, "Yes, im happy i didnt" then at that moment, i see the tail swing around REALLY fast! spins toward the ground and SMACK! the worst part about it was the wires of the battery cought the ball links in the rotor head......then, i saw the battery get THROWN out.. hits the fence and explodes! so now the helis sitting at half throttle digging holes it starts spinning on its side and smacks the fence, puts a nice ding in the boom. there was no way in hell i was going out and stopping the heli, and killing the engine. it was only a 160 dollar heli(guess witch one it was ) so it finnaly hits the fence.....again and stops. i jump over the fence and pull the fuel line out....and jump back over it dies, and i pick it up. looks like hell hit it. wires in the main rotor, canopy in half(dont ask how) skids in peices, blades........everywere on the feild. I wish i got it on film. it looks like it just EXPLODED when it hit the ground. it seemed like i landed in a mine feild. Blade peices were stuck in the fence, flybar was a V shape, paddle missind, found one with hallf the flybar hooked up to it! it was a great crash! id do it again......if i didnt have to pay for it. I was laughing the whole time. i wish someone i knew saw it.

Then after that crash, a guy says" hey, could you fly my heli"!!!! i was like......ummmmmmm nooo. didnt want to crash that one to.

Anybody know where Pine Lake is?

Anybody know where Pine Lake in Ohio is??

Because somewhere on the bottom is a Miniature Aircraft
1004 SE with a GV-1, Synthesized Receiver, Brand FN new OS 61 WC, a CSM 540 gyro, Hatori pipe and graphite blades, (well the blades are probably not so good)

I thought i would donate it as a guppy house.

Looked for that thing for 5 weekends, scuba, netting, dragging, found a bunch of fishing equipment, an anchor, some trees and a pair of glasses.

It is amazing how any change can alter your orientation.

If the sun is directly overhead ( 12:00 noon) it changes the orientation
of the heli for me (almost crash).

Also, I can't fly the tail boom without some bright colors on the horizontal and vertical fin. There is some angles that I become disoriented and have to fly by faith with out the bright colors.

Flying around dark. ( I have seen gary wright, fly close to dark without
a canopy and i had no idea how he was able to tell what it was doing)

I was helping a guy late in the afternoon as the sun was going down.
It was a brand new heli, just as i was able to trim it up nicely I gave
the helicopter the wrong imput in a nose in hover and rolled it right into
the ground and totalled the heli! (cost me 600 bucks and time to put it
back together)

Any way about 75 serious crashes/ totals for me over the last 17 years.

What is amazing as you said in your post is how many times I have pulled my canopy and I was just one more flight from a crash! I have
found that loctite is your friend!

Best Regards
Kam

Just mastered nose-in hovering and nose-in spiral hovering. Well I desided to get into forward flight with my Falcon 46, bad idea.
For some reason the helicopter banked left so I added right cyclic, there was no response. The Falcon went in and exploded like a hand granade. Now I must deside to rebuild, buy new or just quit and go back to airplanes. Live and learn.

Flying RC Helis is like being a race car driver your gonna crash and it's gonna cost you money. This is the first thing you should digest, everyone on this site has faced that reality, some more than others. Your BEST pilots have accidents and I'm sure most of us have a few a year. Now rebuild and get back in the air. Burning fuel is only going to make you a better pilot. Get a good simulator (G2) to compliment your machine and enhance your flying abilities, they work! Please don't be discouraged by this set back and stay out of the scale machines until you have mastered the art of flying around. This will really break your spirt when you crash. When you have a mishap you wanna only have to buy, boom, blades, mainshaft and feathering spindle. Your average 30 size crash should cost you less than $100.00. Keep with it!
