I am putting together a Hornet X3D for my first heli. I am using a GY401 and a Phoenix 35 controlling a Hacker B20-22S. I am using a 9C Super TX. Could anyone offer some setup advice for the gyro and ESC? Thanks.

> X3D for my first heli
Oooh, it's far from the best heli for learning to fly. Just getting such a heli setup is difficult without some experienced help. Maybe consider getting another heli for bashing through the learning curve. It's possible to destroy this heli before you even get off the ground. Hope you have a good simulator also. Anyway feel free to post any questions and I'm sure some one will help you out.

I have recently collected some useful links for Futaba GY401 gyro setup here and here.

Trawl the info and links here.

Hey DarkHorse1, thanks for the advice but I'm kindoff stuck. I spent everything on the heli and radio. Fortunately I bought some training gear. Thank you for the 401 links. Have a good one.

Trainging gear is not going to make a difference if you havent flown a heli before. Do yourself a favor and get a sim for the computer before you even attempt to fly this heli. It will be alot less expensive in the long run.

A bad day of flying is always better than a good day at work!

Um, I seriously doubt you can learn with that hornet, they are fast agile fragile expensive groovy helis and tricky to set up. They are a blast to fly but often nerve wracking mostly due to their small size. The Hornet X3D is an experts machine... A Sim is a great idea. I sold my old G2 to a club memberfor 50$ (and got an XTR) Consider getting a Blade CP It's th opposite of your Hornet. You will have fun learning to fly it and you can learn to use your transmitter to control it with a Futaba short single conversion crystal. you can use the same 3s 1320 liPo's in either chopper. Once you are comfortable with nose in and all flight regimes with the Blade fly your Hornet and I can almost guarantee you'll get a woodie. of course you might prove us wrong....Good luck and fly safe!

Thank you guys for the info and advice. I did have a friend help me set it up which really was great. I managed to work up enough cash for Reflex XTR. I have barely gotten the hornet off the ground and I have managed to destroy a pair of wooden blades on my left ankle. I broke the tail fin which in turn stopped the tail rotor and stripped a gear in the gear box. I am waiting for parts at the moment. I defiantly don’t have enough cash for the blade CP right now. Anyway, thanks again.

Husafreak.
Can you explain what a short single conversion futaba crystal is? Can you also provide a link to Tower Hobby for that. I also have a 9C radio and am building a H2 as my first Heli and Intruder also recommended to me that I start out with a Blade CP. I think I will take the advice everyone has given and do so, but I want to use my own radio. I have also purchased G3 for my sim and am very happy with it.

Thanks for your help.

OK, Tower Hobies sells single coversion "short" crystals on low or high band depending on your TX freq. Here is a copy from their website but I don't know how to make a "link": Futaba FM Receiver Crystal Short R114F 72MHz High
I think you will enjoy flying the Blade CP. It's not too EZ to fly (like a dual rotor job or a big 50 size bird) and you wil get good at lttle heli's with it.
I'm sorry to hear the guy who started this thread crashed into himself. When I said "you might prove us all wrong" I was hoping you might have a real gift for flying R/C heli's. Don't get discouraged man! You picked a tough heli to start with. I started with a Shogun.

Oh you can search: Blade CP pilot report to see my reviews of the Blade CP, only #2 and #3 are still there though...

Hey husafreak, thanks for the encouragement. It will take a lot more than a couple of scars to deter me. I have wanted to fly heli's for a long time now and finally have the chance. I am having fun with it. This next time I'll have more spare parts and will have a few hours logged in on the simm.

husafreak,

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll be buying a Blade in the the next week or two. Unfortunately, for my free time anyways, a friend gave me a really good deal on a r\c off road race truck and I am getting back into r\c car racing right now. But the sim and the Blade will give me something to do on the other nights. I am looking forward to finishing up the Hornet, learning to fly, then installing all my Duzi and S&S bling and upgrades. I am building the Hornet mostly stock to start with. The only upgrade I did was to use Intruders servo mounts which solve a lot of the problems that the Duzi servo mounts present, and give you a good solid mount that imo is far superior to the standard double sided tape.

I raced R/C cars back in the day... a lot of work! I raced Ultimas and Optimas and JRX2's and Lazers and oval cars stock and mod over the years. All electric. Back in Japan in the late 80's (I was in the USAF) the scene was pretty intense!

I used to race 1/8 scale on road gas back in the 80's lol. Looks like I'm going to give 1/10 gas off road a shot now, but I have always been amazed by rc heli's and am looking forward to learning to fly. I will get a big nitro heli someday as well.

You should try for a great deal on a used Raptor 50, The Titan just came out so a lot of guys are getting rid of their perfectly good V2's. And I doubt most of us could tell the diff!
