Hey guys,

I just purchased a TT Raptor .30 V2 and have pretty much completed assembly. Hopefully, I'll have her completely ready to go by next spring when the flying weather turns a little better here in frosty cold OH.

Anyway, I have a question concerning boom mounted tail rotor servos. Seems like MANY people have this option on their Raptors as well as other helicopters and I'm just curious as to what the benefits are to this arrangement. Is the upgrade really worth the money, or am I better of waiting to purchase it when I can do more than hovering or FF?

How well do these types of parts hold up to crashes? Does your TR servo have a better chance of being damaged during a boom strike over the orginal placement of the servo within the frames? Do you typically end up having to replace them often or due to their location can they be used again and again? Seems like the only thing that could be damaged would be the carbon fiber rod running to the TR.

Thanks for any advice or opinions offered,

Mike

Hey Mike ---
Boom mounted servos do allow for a more direct and slop free tail control system. It also allows you to adjust the belt tention without adjusting the tail servo linkage. I've never damaged a tail servo in a crash because it was on the tail, but it is more likely because of the location.

Down side is that it does get exposed to more fuel then if it was mounted up front. Fuel soaked servos will fail on you faster then non fuel soaked servos. The seals on the servos will not keep out everything.

As far as your situation is concerned -- Keep it up front. I know several people who fly with their tail servos up front on a raptor and they still fly phenomenal. At your current level you would be hard pressed to tell a difference. So save your money for fuel and keep that bird cheap.

Mostly bad

Moves the CG aft. Is more exposed to fuel. More likely damaged in a crash. How much slop is there in 12" of well supported push rod anyway? It does allow one to spend about 30 bucks on some spiffy looking carbon fiber.

I used to have all of mine mounted on the tail boom. Now all of mine are mounted up front. I prefer the up front location for various reasons.

if you dont use one, be sure to glue the tail control rod guides to the boom.

I bought the Carbon boom mount system from Quick UK but at the moment I am flying the normal setup.
The reason for the upgrade is that the wire rod has a "Z" bend in it which does flex.
The wire bend works fine for normal hovering and circuit flying but after that the precision of a straight short carbon rod would be an advantage.

if i were you i would keep it up front because i had one mounted on a tail. during the flight the 2 screws came out and sent the raptor doing 360 over the ocean. It was almost uncontrollable. lost all tail rotor pitch. The raptor just made a huge splash in the ocean. I got my scuba gear and found it but nothing to save as it was up about 100 feet. I wish i had put it up front much more secure. This heli only had about 10 flights on it.
