| Daddiesyacht is kind of right, but this is what I would do different.
If you're using a 601, put the gyro onto the limit menu (this will disable heading hold). Adjust the linkages until the LmtA and LmtB values are the same and are reaching the full reach of the rudder linkage.
Adjust the linkages so that both limit values are 120% or above.
That's it.
The reason why you DON'T need to do the in flight trimming is that the GY series gyros just don't care about that. They just want to know where the rudder end points are and they will position the servo so that the tail holds.
Why triming while hovering won't work is because the amount of rudder required depends on too many variables such as pitch, headspeed etc, plus, you're just wasting your time cause the GY series gyro just doesn't care anyway.
There's a reason why the GY401 just has an overall "limit" value rather than an independant Left and Right, it's because the gyro only wants to know the total amount of movement.
