| There was a C30 Recoil start...I have one removed from my first C30 DX from 1991. Why did I not take advantage of the supposed ease of using a recoil starter? Because if used, it would have caused much vibration in the heli and put my radio system to risk.
The core of the starter is an aluminum plug that sits inside the center of the cooling fan. Pressed into this plug is an 8mm steel shaft. The pull-start unit has an 8mm overrunning clutch (one-way bearing for you followers of other ways of describing this clutch) and the 8mm shaft slides into the starter's clutch.
But the problem is in the poorly molded plastic fan and the excessive fan-hub-wobble. The heavy aluminum/steel part in the fan will both shake the heli to bits and destroy the starter mechanism. If you're really lucky and have a dead true running fan then you're OK but I wasn't that lucky. Having a machine shop I was able to design my own starting system of a much lighter mass and minimized the vibes.
But sorry, I'm keeping my old pull starter as part of my Concept collection. Keep looking, you'll find one somewhere but be aware of my warning about wobble. Under .002" (.05mm) TIR is safe but more than that and component life will suffer.
Good luck,
Steve
