I could use some tips on beginning with F3C-type flying.

I am working on most of the maneuvers in both F3C schedules in parts, and in a serious manner. I am trying to improve consistancy and asthetics of them as well. I am using some of Curtis' training moves to improve my orientation and control. The hovering "T" method has really helped with control at hover.

I do fairly well with the flying moves, but the hovering is really hard for me to get every time. The tail-in/nose-in figure 8 is my worst problem.

What are some things that would help me become a better FAI pilot?

Any techniques that would be helpful to me?

Any setup issues that I should change as opposed to my 3D setup?
(besides a LOT of expo)

Thanks

What are curtis' training moves?

Flattening the pitch curve, and using a really low head speed (e.g. 1450 on a 60) helps a lot with hovering.

Heavy flybar paddles (more than 30 g) helps with smoothness and you don't need 3D roll and pitch rates for any of the FAI patterns.

You would expect to use a completely different set up for hovering and flying, and maybe different set ups for different flying manoeuvres. This is why the high end radios have so many flight mode options.

Apart from that, practice a lot.

Hi,

I found learning to do real slow pirouettes helped my hovering no end. If you can do a really slow pirouette and keep the model in one position, not matter what the wind is doing then most of the hovering manouvers will become much easier.

Make sure you have a very flat throttle curve in the hover, you want to do most of your hovering on the pitch to stop any great torque changes from the engine spooling up and down. Also find a good set of blades, you will be suprised what a difference they make.

Finally you won't want a 3D pitch curve. I run -6 to +10 in all flight modes for F3C. I just up the centre stick pitch for the hover.

Cheers

try this manuever for practice

sideways eight-tail in to start. so you are flying sideways at a consistent speed forming the 8 with the collective....maintain constant speed as you describe the sideways eight (the infinity symbol in math or whatever)

modify it by doing a constant half pirouette to nose in as you continue doing the maneuver

spice it up a little while maintaining motion, more piros, constant piros.......trains you to stay at a constant rate of motion with all the sticks, and looks kinda neat too. can do it as a vertical eight or whatever too.

that fai schedule has some neat maneuvers in it!

Thanks all.

I am doing MUCH better with the hovering than I used to. What is helping a lot is to practice slow, deliberate hover translation with piros. Nice, and slow, constant speed and altitude.

In Curtis' video, he says he practices flying a "T" shape in all 4 hover orientations. If one keeps it perfect, this is good practice for 3D and FAI.

Do any of you think it's a bad idea to have the same heli do both 3D and FAI? Sure, I could use different modes and such on the radio, but does the model's physical setup HAVE to change much between 3D and FAI?

Thanks, again.
